  • For a collection of small nations at the northern fringe of Europe, Scandinavia produced in a relatively short space of time a remarkable quantity of great musicians - including from the late classical and early periods Berwald, Pacius and Crusell, to Gade, Svendsen ,Sinding and Grieg in the mid 19th, and of course Sibelius, Nielsen, Laangaard and Stenhammer at the end of the 19th who became major international composers in the first three decades of the 20th century.
    Composer: Edvard Hagerup Grieg

Edvard Grieg (1843 - 1907) of course will always be remembered as the composer of the highly effective A minor piano concerto, and his incidental music to Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt. However, it is as a miniaturist that Greig’s true genius lies. Grieg was a very capable pianist, and had in fact made his early career as a concert pianist, and his songs and solo piano music form the heart of his output. The early piano sonata although interesting shows clearly why the less restricting forms of the miniatures for solo piano suited his genius. The Lyric Pieces and Peasant Dances display his keen ear for traditional folk music, matched probably only by Bartok and Kodaly.
The 66 works that comprise the 10 books of Lyric Pieces date from 1867 to 1901, and are extraordinary, exquisitely crafted works that can stand comparison to any of the great sonatas of his contemporaries. This set includes the complete Lyric Pieces, the Sonata, The Holberg Suite and the lesser-known piano works of this great composer who captured the very essence of his native Norway in music.

Years ago a friend of mine gave me Edvard Grieg piano books. I remember playing some of his compositions for the first time as I'd never heard of him before. I was blown away by just how beautiful they are. To this day Edvard is one of my favorite composers ❤
I am sick today and played piano for a little bit and played some of his music. I wanted to keep playing but the pressure from my sinuses is giving me a massive headache...I'm grateful to be able to listen to his music here as it helps to lull me into a peaceful and much needed rest. ❤

A dear friend died last evening, at 85, who was a professional conductor for BBC. He loved grief. Only today have I listened as I recall his smiling face. Lovely blessing, thanks. Oooooops I meant he likes grief. Irony strikes again by accident or design!!!!

Long time ago I was reading Peer Gynt and suddenly I looked up for some music based on that work. Some days after I found Grieg's suite for Peer Gynt, suddenly when Ase's Death came I felt the music so ominous and deep. After that encounter I searched more and found his complete works for piano, since then his works are like food for my ears and my soul.

I'm so happy you produced these albums. For years I listened to and adored Eva Knardahl's versions, and then they were pulled off YT. I was so upset I wouldn't listen to anyone else, until now. These are quite different, more lyrical, romantic. They lack her gravitas and authority (especially in "Holberg"). But very fine. Thank you so much!

Really fine performances and recording. Listened to about an hour and knew that $9 for just the Lyric Pieces alone was already very generous. All of the rest of the music as well, much of which I've never heard, meant that this purchase was a "no-brainer". Thank you!

When I went through your tracklist, looking for a specific piece that sticks to my mind, I discovered that the naming of tracks between 00:52:51 and 01:34:07 seems to be shifted one up. Please check your original data. These are my clues:
      - I Don't know the name of the piece starting at 00:55:38, but it seems the one at 00:59:33 is "Norwegian March"
      - I know for sure that the piece at 00:59:33 is "March of the Dwarfs", and 01:15:42 is "Vanished Days".
      - At 01:27:22 there is a track left out from your list; probably the "Secret"
      - Nothing starts at 01:31:04, but at 01:31:32 there is a track that fits the title "She Dances"

Besides the likes of Mozart and Bach and some easy Chopin, I hope he'll help me get back into actually playing from the sheet again, as he's technically not intimidating at all, and yet lovely and lyrical. Chopin and Schumann were too of Grieg's favorite composers and their influence on his piano music is clear.

    Hi all!
    My mistake!
Although not pinned any more by Brillint (since edited, I believe), the entire timed list of all pieces can be found 4 years ago in the reverse chronological order.

    Ravishing miniatures!!
Something Chopin might have liked to compose on top of his Preludes, with a broad European taste and culture for various countries categories (e.g.: the Spanish-like first Walz at 01:30)!
By the way, please help here!!
After 1:52:11 in the introduction timing, no additional timing info is available, i.e.: no more Brilliant pinned list present on top of the comment or elsewhere (?) to find the ENTIRE table of contents?
    Could you please revive it?
    Many thanks and kind regards.

Delightful piano music. I was not familiar with any of it. Just the grand piano concerto. The piano version of the wonderful Holberg Suite at the end is only familiar to me in its orchestral form.

Although Håkon Austbö is a highly talented pianist, Grieg's Lyric Pieces, native to Austbö are taken for granted. Require greater examination.
