      I honestly didn't notice that until very recently. It is very subtle. Luke Combs sang the final line at the Grammy's "we got to make a decision".

    Most amazing fact: this…was her DEBUT SINGLE!

    The most amazing part of this video is that she performed earlier in the day to a much smaller crowd. Stevie Wonder was set to perform but the device with his music was missing, so they found Tracy and got her to perform again to the full crowd of 100,000 people. Her album skyrocketed after their performance. Beautiful song with a beautiful story

      I remember watching the broadcast of the final show of the Amnesty International tour. The final show I think. Was in Buenos Aires. The other artists were Youssou n'dour, Sting, Peter Gabriel and Bruce Springsteen in a huge stadium. They all had big bands and Tracy came out solo with her acoustic and had 100,000 people eating out of her hand.

    This is one of my all-time favorite songs. It's raw, emotional, and reminds me a little of my youth. My parents were drug addicts and alcoholics. There were all sorts of different types of abuse going on in my home too. Anywhere but home is where I wanted be. The military was my escape at 18 years old, and after being honorably discharged 4 years later, I began my path to finding healing. For me, that led to God, and through Him, learning humility and forgiveness. Every path is going to be different though. I hope everyone who relates to this song can find hope and healing.

    She broke the cycle by the end...
    Her mother left, left her dad and left her, to find a better life.

    I agree with your analysis of the song. She’s hoping they can build a good life together in the beginning, but he turns out to be like her father. She finds herself in the same dysfunctional situation she was in before. She’s still breaking the cycle for herself and her kids a bit, though, because she’s telling him that he needs to decide to get better or leave. She’s staying where she is with her job that pays all of the bills and their kids. He can go. She’s keeping what she built by herself, and she’s not leaving her kids in that situation like her own mother left her.
    I have listened to this song since it came out, and love it as much today as I did back then. As someone else already mentioned, “Give Me One Reason” is also an amazingly good song of hers.

    • @maryhenry
      @maryhenry 3 года назад +8

      I think the key is the switch from "We gotta make a decision" to "You gotta make a decision." She had hoped he would lift her up. Instead, he held her back. She is recognizing the few successes she has had (low-paying job, but it pays the bills) and has realized that she is done with codependency.

    Tracy Chapman has the most unique voice and ability to tell a story. This song speaks volumes and about and to kids growing up in poverty and/or hopelessness. It matters not what shade of skin you have, these feelings are real and the potential for repeating the choices of your parents is great. I identified with this song as a teen, but thank God that I was able to change my circumstances. Many of my siblings made different choices and the life they live reflects that for them and their children and grandchildren. It is heartbreaking!

      @@CapnWack , I am not referring to material things. Reading for content and meaning is important. Tracy Chapman wasn’t talking about material things, either. Poverty of spirit and hopelessness can happen at any income level, but she was referring to generational mistakes and poverty. I think your chip is showing 😉.

    To add on to the comments about this performance-- the crowd didn't know who she was. Notice the chanting as she starts. Notice it get quiet as she goes. This was literally the moment a star was born. The universe gave her an opportunity, and she literally walked out on stage and had every artists dream come true. This story along with the nostalgia for my dad attached to this song makes me emotional every time I hear it.

    This song came out at around the same time I had just experienced a terrible, traumatizing event. I was in the Army, far from family, melting down. My friend took me on a drive from Monterey to San Francisco in her Trans Am, and we drove with the windows all the way down, and it was the first time I heard this song. I wept.

    You say the chorus changes every time even though the words are the same, it’s literally her going from hopeful and optimistic, to regret and heartbreak that she finds herself back in the situation she was running from, then in the end you hear her strength and resolve to not continue to repeat the same pattern, this song is genius and one of my favorites, because it tells the story of so many, it’s so heartbreaking and hopeful and regretful and tragic all at the same time, and she just breaks your heart with her voice and story, it’s truly one of the best songs ever 🥲💕

    Best reaction I have seen to this song. You picked up the difference between the "leave tonight or live and die this way" verse, how it meant something totally different at the beginning than it did at the end. At the beginning it meant "we can leave" and start on our journey to improve our lives. At the end, it meant "you can leave" because their goals were not the same, and she could not be the person she wanted to be when encumbered with this person.
