Tracy Chapman & Eric Clapton played together to celebrate their shared birthdays, March 30, 1964, & March 30, 1945; respectively. If you think this is good, Jamel, watch Chapman, on the Letterman show, performing "Stand By Me", acoustically. And of course, there is Chapman's performance at Nelson Mandela's birthday celebration, in front of thousands of audience members. She gave a performance that was akin to her standing in a recording studio, alone, just singing & playing guitar while recording, SPECTACULAR! For the record, I think Tracy Chapman is the best storyteller musician that ever lived, followed by Bob Dylan & Woody Guthrie. (Every time I listen to Chapman's "Behind The Wall" I cry because I lived observing that crap up until the mid-1970s, in Florida. Domestic Violence, in Florida, is so prevalent that nurses have to take mandatory, bi-annual domestic violence courses to renew their licenses. On one such occasion, the moderator silently turned on a boom box, played "Behind The Wall", silently turned off the boom box, & walked off the stage. Of the close to 400 RNs in the audience, there was not one dry eye amongst us, including the male RNs because we have all been in that situation; seeing a beaten woman but the police couldn't do anything because "they can't interfere with domestic affairs between a man & his wife").
Really ❗️ I’ve seen some artists perform together, and you can tell they don’t even care to be doing it. This is the first I’ve heard of this one. And they really do both seem to be enjoying it. Cool. 📻🙂
I didn't know, either! Love Tracy Chapman and Eric Clapton! You could tell that it was Clapton playing (vs. any other guitarist) because he has such a beautiful and awesome sound. Great video!
Being a “blues guy “when I was younger I was thrilled when my graduate school band said I had to pick a song to play that was “current” - this was of course the natural one I picked.
Oh wow, never saw this performance before. Yeah, it was already pretty much perfect but adding Eric Clapton and a brass section made it even better. Incredible live vocals from Tracy.
Tracy Chapman hit me in the feels when I first heard her. She was a rather morose figure though when she broke out with Fast Car, and for me it wasn't until her next album where she grew her hair out and started flashing that smile that I came to think of her as quite literally one of the most beautiful women alive. Oh, and the music was something else, too! Loves me some Tracy!
Duets with legends who are fearless about their talent and committed to always making the music the best it can be and everybody having a great time-including them. 😊
I wore out my New Beginning album back in '95'. Tracy's voice is so smooth and Clapton's guitar fills between lyrics in this version were impeccable. 👍🙏✌️
Two amazing artists singing a great song! I could listen to this all day. Tracy’s smile is beautiful and she looked so happy to be singing with Eric Clapton! He really let her shine!
What I love about this performance is watching Tracy Chapman smiling. Apparently she is quite shy and doesn't enjoy performing in front of an audience, which is why she usually shows so little emotion when she sings. But in this duet she seems quite star struck with Clapton and seems to really be enjoying herself.
I love her voice - and adding Eric is CAKE! Love me some cool blues, and this definitely makes the grade. Nice choice Jamel, thanks for reacting to this performance.
Tracy is just as beautiful today got some grey in the dreads now those . What a amazing songwriter and one of the greatest female talents of the last 30 years .😁🇬🇧❤️
Hey👍 thanks so much for this buddy, I've never heard their collaboration before, both are legends for me I just love Tracy Chapman she's so talented and writes beautifully and Eric Clapton could make strumming a rubber band a masterpiece 👍✌️🙏💕
Wow, I saw this on TV when it was broadcast as a charity event around Christmas and I even bought the whole show on CD. Been over 22 years since I saw it... thanks for this reaction.
Thank you for critiquing this performance. It was awesome! Brought me back to when she did Fast Car which I just loved when it first came out and is timeless.
I’ve watched this video many times. But I loved watching Jamal’s reaction. First, this is an incredible song on it’s own. Then, you’re playing with Eric (freaking) Clapton! But he is so classically Clapton that he plays his fills and solos in a way that blends in to the main song and you can’t imagine how it wasn’t there in the first place. They are both masters at their craft. Tracy is not only a great songwriter but she is a very legitimate guitarist in her own right.
Clapton does not get enough credit for how collaborative he is. People diss him for his politics but year after year, cause after cause, he has shown up to play at events organized by other artists, and his own concerts as well (cross roads festival, etc.)
Now that was BADASS!!!! Love the song, love Tracy and Eric he's a GOAT when it comes to playing a 🎸 Thank you for your reaction hope you have a blessed evening 🙏
That was a really, really good arrangement. All the pieces - the guitars, the horns, and the organ - just meshed so well together. I thought that the organ is what really gave it that extra bluesy feel.
Both artists never disappoint! They can see the respect they have for eachother! Tracy Chapman and Pavarotti duet to baby can I hold you is a must listen
Wasn’t this something?? Absolutely love it! Eric is one of my favorite guitarists of all time! And this song has always been a favorite of mine also 😊 I showed the song to my daughter years ago and she loves it too. She is an awesome singer! Thank you Jamel, I’m so glad you liked this performance! Just like you said, adding something else to an already great song! Yes, ERIC! Can’t go wrong with that! 😊☮️💜
So good in every way. Soulful. She is great. I have four of her CDs from that time and her songs that never aired are wonderful. Thanks Jamal for this treasure of a video. ❤️
Tracy's duet with opera singer Luciano Pavarotti on her beautiful "Baby Can I Hold You" is a "live" gem as well. Check it out. I love that Tracy has lived a peaceful, quiet life away from the spotlight for some 30+ years now, by her own choosing. She's pushing 60 now and is a showbiz survivor of the first order. It's always better to leave the public wanting more, and not less.
That’s a home run right there! Knocked it out of the park with that performance. You’re so right about the gumbo analogy. The song is perfect just as it is. But. Add Eric Clapton to it….perfection!
This is one of my Favorite songs with Tracy and Eric Together.. I downloaded it to my Play list Right Before My Brother Stole My CD Out Of My Car as Soon as I Pulled Up To His House, Because He Said It Was His Favorite Also...
Such a great performance of a great song. I love Tracy's huge smile throughout this. She was definitely loving playing with Eric. Her singing is amazing in how effortless it seems to be for her to be great. :)
I did not know they had done this together, so glad you reviewed it. As you said you do, I too enjoy seeing what an artist brings to a song already perfect. eric did a great job added a lot without distracting or cluttering the song. He brought some lovely little additions that melted into the song perfectly yet were distinctively noticiable.

Really ❗️

Cool.
📻🙂
I was unaware as well. I am not surprised given Eric Clapton’s love and appreciation of other guitarists and rootstock artist.
I was just going to say the same thing
I didn't know, either! Love Tracy Chapman and Eric Clapton! You could tell that it was Clapton playing (vs. any other guitarist) because he has such a beautiful and awesome sound. Great video!
I wish Tracy would make music more often. Also, she has the most beautiful smile.

Tracy has said she hates being in the limelight. She chose to step back a bit. Her choice.
Tracy has consistently released albums just stays out of the limelight , what a amazing talent and a beautiful soul .
Those dimples!!!!
This song was made for Tracy Chapman she brings it to life with that sultry voice of hers. But to collab with Eric what a treat Bravo 👏.

Of course it was made for her. She wrote it.
It's an original by Chapman, though.
Tracy is HAPPY with this version of her song.
Being a “blues guy “when I was younger I was thrilled when my graduate school band said I had to pick a song to play that was “current” - this was of course the natural one I picked.
I got goosebumps hearing just the first line. She's a freakin legend!!
Love this performance ❤
Eric never tried to takeover, he plays for the song. This song is perfect already and right in his wheelhouse.
Picking the blues! Love it
Oh wow, never saw this performance before. Yeah, it was already pretty much perfect but adding Eric Clapton and a brass section made it even better. Incredible live vocals from Tracy.

Tracy will never let you down. Listen to any song on any one of her albums, each one of her songs pulls on your heartstrings.
Tracy is such a beautiful song writer, and singer. Unmistakable voice and sound. Writes, plays and sings. Wow
