Thank you doc ! May I add a suggestion for videos going forward ? When referencing other videos such as “principles of sitting” as you did about 1 minute into this video you can actually set a clickable link to pop up on screen for your viewers to jump directly too. Epic content much appreciate it
I just got a firm sleeper couch and due to the pandemic going on I will be working from home. I have to use the couch as an office seat during the week. Thank you for the advice this will come in handy for sure.
Thank you so much for these suggestions. I have from time to time go into my bedroom to watch t.v., laying on my firm mattress, just because of lower back pain. Of course that's not cool when company is over! I do appreciate your video.
If your couch is low, deep and soft, the best fix is to take your couch to the tip. That’s what I did. I then replaced it with a smaller couch with perfect dimensions and firmness which worked for me. Don’t kid yourself that amendments will fix poor sofa design and ergonomics. You only have one back, bite the bullet and remove all root causes of your back pain from your house. The quicker you do that the quicker you improve your back health.
Great video. My wife and I are actually looking for a couch that has the qualities you described, (shallow depth, higher height, and firm) instead of modifying one. Is there a couch you recommend to buy?
OperaLoverElenaXan Nice! I ended up finding one at RC Wiley that worked pretty great! It was a much shallower and firmer couch! 😎 Using pillows is always great too.
My back still hurs after using a pillow i cant afford a ergonomic chair and I want to stream a game for 10+ hours on a laptop and i end up taking 2 hour breaks after gaming 2-3 hours but id like to only take breaks to eat its frustrating that I cant play long hours like i used too
Sorry to say that no amount of pillow is going to be great for 10 plus hours of sitting on a couch with a laptop. We are just not designed to sit that long. You may be better off sitting on the floor with the laptop raised to eye level. Try that.
Tadas Balasaitis. Sorry about slow reply. I’ve never seen a couch that is too high, however some may be close-ish to the correct height if you’re a shorter person. The key is make sure you’re feet are able to sit flat on the ground. That means on a taller couch you may need more cushion behind you so that you can’t go too deep on the couch. Soft is best made firmer through blankets as I mention. You don’t need much if your height is close. If all else fails just sit in front of the couch. Hope that helps.
No couch . Desk chair with no back rest at all, you hold yourself up. Give it one year you cured back pain and posture and might have lost weight or belly size . Dense foam roller is the key, without that through the whole entire body daily, one is lost in the stiffness.

Good to hear from someone who has thought this out in some detail

Hardcore! I love it and is probably the best answer but most people want to keep their couch. 😄
This is literally a life saver
Thank You So Much! I feel better already!
You're welcome!
I have a bukged disk and sciatica, good I can sit with your suggestions. Thank you

Unfortunately, we have never found one we would recommend. If you find one you love, let us know.
Melbourne City Chiropractic Thanks for the response!

IKEA Ekenaset, both armchair and sofa are perfect dimensions for me.
Thank you

Hi, but if couch is already high but deep and soft?

What’s the ideal height of a sofa to avoid back and shoulder/neck pain?
Ideally sitting height has your hips higher than your knees. So something quite high and firm is ideal. Hard to find in a sofa.
awesomeeee
That does not look comfortable...what about sitting with feet up on the sofa? 🤔
Not best for most and normally when feet come up our pelvis tucks under and our low back slumps into flexion. Give it a try and see how you go.
Its impossible to sit bolt upright all the time people need to relax
Sitting or laying on the floor.....I'm 55, ffs! Just wait until you get to that age and see if you still think that's a great idea.🙄
