Tweaking a Line 6 Spider amp to work with guitar pedals

  • In this video I take a totally different departure... what happens when you use high end (or as some call.. "Boutique") pedals with an inexpensive Line 6 Spider 30 amp? Many times, not very good results. I'll show you how I set up the Line 6 to get a decent clean tone for pedals and also a trick at the end for connecting it to an external cabinet.

    I guess what I got from this video is 1: use your ears and not your eyes to adjust the settings. 2: Don't trust the presets. 3: Don't judge any amp based on what other people say ( watch Johan Segeborn's videos) 4: a real speaker can make an amp sound better than you thought it capable of. I really like these videos- thanks Brian!

    I hooked an old HiFi speaker up to one of those little Orange battery amps when I was early in my guitar journey. It was surprising how good it sounded (Obviously nothing amazing but certainly decent at home), and the nice thing about those amps is they clean up with the guitar volume knob. I keep meaning to build a cabinet for that little amp and put a proper speaker on it.

    This was my first guitar amp. I had always been a bass player, and had semi-pro bass equipment as I was in several bands. I had a 220w Crate head going into a Crate 4x10". After I bought my first Telecaster I knew I needed an amp, but was on a budget.
    I knew the Spider series had a lot of features so I got the 100w or 120w combo used and then splurged on the big Line-6 "controller" pedal.
    Some people hate on this, but it's a pretty capable system if you tune it.
    It doesn't quite have the sound I want though.
    I currently still use it though, and I have an MXR dist pedal and a BOSS PS-6( Pretty weird pedal that has 1 & 3 voice chorus in minor/major, a detuned chorus, and a adjustable WIDE pitch shifter with rise/fall) You really do need to tweak it just right to use those pedals, but it can be done. I'd advise you learn how to save a preset just for that so you can save the time.

    Great vid. I use a pod-xt for practice and demo/YT video recording because my son is autistic and has a savage noise aversion problem. This creates a major problem for me and my DSL100 with a 4x12. SO, I use my O/D pedal into a carefully tweaked VOX based model and it sounds BRILLIANT! Gives me that sound/response im looking for to practice without annoying the bejesus out of my son. Trial and error is one thing but restraint with the digital models is key to getting a pedal/s to work with it without it sounding shit.

    In general what is the best approach on amp's EQ when you connect a distortion pedal like Dracarys? Would it be better to have all the amp's EQ at 12 o'clock and then adjust the dracarys' EQ for i.e. a metal scooped sound or should you set the amp's EQ as it should be and then stuck dracarys on top of it. I always appreciate when someone approaches the "make the cheap stuff sound better" topic. I have never had a Line 6, but have played them and prefer the Peavey Vypyr line of amps which (until the release of the Pro) are also in the same price range. They seem to take pedals pretty well through the front. I started putting effects loops in those amps with pretty good tonal success. Do you think the cheaper Line 6 stuff would do well with an effects loop added in?

    Thank you. I've been screwing around with this same amp for over a year - and just like your first attempts in this session, no matter what pedal(s) I use, in or out to another amp, or straight in with no pedals - no matter what settings I've tried, no matter which guitar I've used - I've never managed to get anything but that shrill, tinny sound you obtained about a 1/4 the way through. I've gotten so disgusted (I've played for 40+ years, but mostly through tube amps, or tube D.I. pre's - this was my attempt to see what a 'digital' amp could do), I nearly kicked the piece of crap speaker in. I have a RAT, an American Woman, a (Seymor Duncan) Fender Classic twin-channel mil-spec tube preamp, and assorted pedals. I don't NEED this to work, but it bothers me when something has the potential, but I can't find it.
    The secret, as you say, is in the EQ, and in turning the bass all the way up (or nearly so) - all of your tweaks together worked magic, and I'm looking forward later to trying them. I also have a POD 2.0, which is not nearly as bad (probably because I use my own speaker/cab to run it into, or use it with a Midi-Man mini-mixer (18 channel) as part of a D.I. chain), but still, the adjustments must be wide and sweeping, and then, when the tone evens out, very precise - not at all like the tube amps I am used to. You may have changed my mind - we'll see.

    • @51MontyPython
      @51MontyPython 3 года назад +1

      Wait a sec....couple of questions for ya...Are you saying that tube amps settings have much less tonal variance than this amp? And my main question: What exactly did you learn from this video that you did not already know or try out for yourself already? I own one of these amps (though it looks a little different for some reason (not sure why; if they're the same model they should all be consistent, right? anyways..)), and I was expecting this video to actually be informing, yet, I did not learn literally _anything_ that I didn't already know, with the exception of the ability to hook up an external cab, but as far as just using the amp by itself, there's nothing new here, which is why I'm perplexed at your comment. With someone with as much experience with pro audio gear that you seem to have, would think you'd have already figured out how to dial it in by now. Weird.

      There is no fx send/return function in these amps; so, you need to put fx processor or pedalboard in front of your looper. For example, when I have to play with old spider jam I put my pedalboard that also includes a looper in aux and use the amp just as a monitor.

    I remember when I got my first MARSHALL Tube amp after Line 6, I’ve been so surprised how great can by a sound of my guitar, and how it reacts on dynamic of my play. Line 6 is really not great in terms of tone reproduction, but still can be a good option for a beginner who not care about sound details though.

    • @KevLloyd13
      @KevLloyd13 4 года назад

      @@ivanlopes671 It's always a challenge to get good tones out of any equipment, even if you have expensive amps or pedals.
      I have a Spider III 30w for about 10 years and I like it a lot. When I bought my Zoom G5 I had some trouble setting it up along with the Spider amp. But now I can get really good tones with both working together.
      Try to use some eq on your Zoom to cut high frequencies. And disable all amp/cabinet simulators on Zoom, because Line6 amps are modelling amps, and work with their own amp simulations.
      I hope you get best tones possible!

    It needs the treble up its not a presence control i thought it sounded like a blanket was over the speaker with the treble down so far. imo the fizz is from the cheap speaker its just an overly bright speaker to begin with.
    I have that same amp and i use the boost function makes the dirty tones alot better imo.
    The spider amps would of been WAY better if they continued in the direction they were going with the very first spider 112. Separate chorus, flange and tremolo when they combined the flange and chorus into one knob was where they screwed up. keeping the reverb separate was good giving the amp a total of 3 effects

    What does stock settings mean? I've found that many amps that guys think sound bad, they simply just have not adjusted them properly. And you have to remember that not all amps EQ's are equal. Meaning, some amps need more low end than you're used to dialing in while other amps need more mid and some need more treble taken out than what you are used to dialing in or out. I found that you really have to play around with an amps EQ to get the best sound out of said amp. There's not a cookie cutter setting for EQ on amps that so happen to have an EQ section.

    I know a guy that has a jcm900. His backup is a 150watt spyder. I've heard him use it for his set. It's a passable sound if you can tweak it. Of course the Marshall sounds better.

    I beleive you have absolutely no idea what you are doing with this amp. I have had a line 6 spider 3 for several years and love it. You are doing everything you can to make it look bad. First of all you keep playing with the settings knobs. You have them all screwed up. It seems to me you want it to look bad and it is a 30 watt with a mic. And a tube screemer. Read the book and you will find that everything you just did is wrong. U do not even know that when you turn all the settings down to 0 it will put it into a basic amp marchall or fender. Know your equipment before you dog on it.

    This again seems to underscore the importance of speaker and cab selection even with an inexpensive amp. I wonder how much of the fizziness on the top end is due to that speaker? Also, it's impressive that they are able to sell enough of those low-quality amps without having better speaker options - it tells me there is a large market of gear buyers who are not 'tone chasers.'

      Speaker selection seems to be the thing lately. Most of these amps get sold to first timers and wowed by the options but the stock settings are horrible if you've played a while. I have one I got as a throw in on a guitar trade and worked on it to get a passable clean tone to push pedals through for practice. Took a while. So I appreciate what BW did here, perfect idea. Perhaps BW will roll out a few more how-tos on 'universally hated amps'... I'd like to see the 'Squier SP-10 Challenge', lol!

      I have one of the Spider IIs and was told that the "special design" speakers had identical specs to the Celestion 70/30s. It's like everything else. The 70/30 is a "good" speaker if you like the sound of it. If you hate Celestions for whatever reason, you're not going to like the Line 6 speaker, either. It's also an open back combo, and I could see why closed back cab people wouldn't like that. I've had this 212 amp really loud several times over 15 years and haven't blown them (used the amp at many gigs). So I don't think the speakers qualify as cheap Chinese junk by any means.

    I have NEVER recommended a modeling amp unless the intended player is compelled to try or experiment with some different effects but who also has very, very little available money who can't afford a separate amp and effects. A very important part of an electric guitar player learning curve is learning the interaction of separate guitars, pedals and amps to each other - buying a modeler amp basically sidesteps and disables understanding and learning that essential body of knowledge that every electric guitar player really should learn.

    • @wampler_pedals
