I have been at the sales game for over 30 years. You nailed it. What we do may look like a mystery to others but when its in your blood, it is not work. You said it best, we solve problems.
I just started a random part time job at gnc about a month ago. I’ve made the most sales in the first month anyones ever seen. I’m not even gettin compensated for it, but it’s so rewarding and I’m falling in love with it. Im in college, should I continue or just go after it? And what particular job markets in sales should I look for

@@davejohnson4311look at being a product rep. That’s what I did. From retail to working for one of our vendors. Sales is just helping people and solving problems. Don’t get too attached to jobs unless you are really taken care of. Best of luck!
People’s perception of sales is in a room wearing a suit with a power point presentation. What you don’t see is the 80 calls you made and the 10 appointments you scheduled to get into that room with that client.
People also don’t realize that consultants, attorneys, professional speakers are also sales professionals. I am a professional speaker and leadership/team development coach..... I prospect every single day, every where I go. 80% of owning a business is sales and marketing.
Kung-Fu Kenny i am a professional speaker and consultant..... also have family members that are corporate attorneys.... all are responsible for bringing in clients and building a book of business. Business development is a huge part of many executives responsibility as well. There are many ways to sell. It happens all the time in many professions. It’s not just the salesy used car sterotype. Leadership development experts like John Maxwell all built their brand by selling.
I'd say another thing that I enjoy while being in sales is the abilities and skills that you acquire to sell anything and everything including your kids on whatever you want them to do.... Or at work. Also the smile and pride you take with you when you go home after a big sale.... Man, it's the best thing ever. And not to forget you get to dress as a million bucks every day... I love sales!
I’ve been in sales 26 years and this is definitely still true til this day however I would give you some advice that I wish someone would of gave me when I was younger. You can’t keep up this forever, going to bed late waking up at 4:30am, on your laptop at home at night working late. You literally have a poor work/life balance I mean if you do the math you’re really putting in 10-14 hour work days. You can keep it up for a while but once you get married and have a family it’s a different ballgame. My advice would be to have fun and do the sales thing for a while but don’t stay in it too long, pivot into a different role in order to keep yourself fresh and avoid the “salesman label”. If you do it for too long it will be difficult to change roles in the later part of your career because you’re just a “salesman”.
Can you give examples of different roles? I'm graduating in 2 years with a B.S. in Economics, and a minor in Finance. I know I don't want to be in sales; what other roles could I pursue in the finance industry?
Sales professionals who excel in the role often times retire early or transition into more of a managerial/presales/sales support role after working in it for a while. It's a young man's ball game with a lot of upside.
I have huge respect for people in the sales and marketing department in my company. They have to get creative and being tactical on how to being liked by the client. It's not like you make the pitch and you are done.
True to some extend, a good sales does not pitch but targets his prospects before even pitching. Make the trust process smooth in. afterwards they pitch with the only language any customer knows. help me to help you. My product takes care of your sleepless nights.
I was not a salesman but worked in an Inbound Call Center where we had to sell Service Solutions to the customer. What I did is found out which service solution would help lower their bill: like the $5 100 text message package. This was back in 2005 to 2007 They always asked if it would help me and they wouldn't buy it unless it did. So I never had to push them.
I have been in outside sales for twenty five years (53). I am so burned out with the crm, the increased targets, the commission plan that changes annually. I have made good money mind you doing this. But now that I am in my 50's, I just want a job where I can go to work, interact with people and at 4 pm, I am done. I do not have to worry about work. I have accepted an inside counter sales position with a supply house and love it. I make about $20k less per year, but my finances are in order. And again, when I leave the office, I don't think about work.
My dad was a salesman, who could sell you a pile of sand, he was that good! He worked hard, 5 children but that also made him a good father! There are disappointments but there are twice as many rewards and at the end of the day, you can go home and know that you did a great job! That is what really matters. Love the video and lots of love to you!
I used to work sales but I couldn’t handle the deadlines and the pressure so props to you man for handling up and gettin it. One of your best videos so far
I have some friends that are in sales and they do work really hard. Especially if the product is disruptive so the people your selling too are already sceptical. It's definitely a job I wouldn't want. I'll stick to keeping the computers running. Glad you're loving it! Keep Killin it!
Sales is probably one of the most impactful jobs that I've seen. You single-handedly keep a business alive with every deal you close. It's also brutal. You have to keep facing rejection, brush it off, and get back up, all in a marketplace that is evolving at the speed of light. Props to you for texting your girlfriend every day for 1 year. I've made a commitment to improving my communication skills (sales, marketing, negotiation, management, etc) at least for this year, if not for the next few years, because of how important it is to business. How do you stay so persistent through the grind?
I have been in sales for 3 years now. Transitioned from selling printers B2B to being a consultant. It is crazy how much I have learned. Now, I am an Account Executive with Spectrum Business. Keep up the good work Travis!
heyy im actually debating if should transition to AE role im a BDR right now. whats the difference in the amount of calls u take? i know AE usually seal with existing customers and try to retain and upsell? also i know it depends but whats average salary of AE, bdr is around 40-45 before commission

I just started in sales(insurance agent) 1 week ago. Working commission only everyday only to make NOTHING is VERY frustrating. On top of that I’m facing eviction soon. But at the same time I love it. The possibility that I just might make a sale that day. The possibility that I will one day be financially stable for not just myself, but for my family keeps me motivated. A part of me wants to quit and get a paid salary job, but I just can’t. I worked for about 9 hours today and made nothing. But I’m not even upset, because every day I learning something new. To learn something new is so so rewarding. Commission only is tough, but seeing my colleagues making a lot of money doing it really motivates me to do and be better, because I know that one day that’ll be me.
Thing is, if there’s days you don’t get paid then u have to double your sales the next day which is gonna be difficult. Most comm only sales job don’t believe in the product themselves so best to get day job
sales is soooo hard in my opinion and rude clients really do affect your vibe when you approach the next client. I've been working as a sales consultant for a cross selling already existing customers and I still find it hard, can't even imagine what cold calling would be like. I think about quitting at least 6 times a day lol But It taught me how to deal with rejection and still remain positive.
I did this internship that made me do 50 cold calls everyday and I still couldn't get paid because the targets were almost impossible. When we stopped working, the boss used to shout at us. Man, if you want your employees to work hard, atleast pay them enough.
Definitely nice production on this video! My job is very “blue collar” so it’s cool to see how other people in other careers function day to day. But also it’s crazy to think about how no matter how different our jobs are, we’re brought together through RUclips and mutual interests and lifestyle. That is pretty awesome 😊
Don’t know bout you, but the fun part is when the funnel starts taking place and you see it happen. It is one of the most remarkable things I have ever seen.

Thank you for sharing your experience working in sales so far. I'm considering pursuing a career in sales at the moment because I feel like I'd enjoy socializing with people constantly. This video gave me valuable information into learning what it's like to work as a salesperson such as yourself.
Hey Travis. Your sales vids helped inspire me to get into sales. It was especially motivating that you initially started out doing something else and then switched over. I actually just got my first sales job this week and I’m stoked about it. Thanks a lot!
I’m very unknowledgeable about the world of sales, but it seems like a really daunting and challenging career to take on! I’m not going to lie-I don’t think I’d desire something so stressful, so serious serious SERIOUS props to you for sharing your experience!
I really enjoyed your video. The way you explained everything, and your positive energy and how goal oriented you came off. I was a market representative for 2 weeks but I realized it just wasn't for me. We have to be exactly like the way you described and I just didn't have it in me. I'm more shy, and sensitive to rejection and rude customers and suffer with social anxiety and top it all off I'm pregnant so it made it so much more stressful for me. I realized I couldn't be what the company wanted me to be so I walked away, no hard feelings. My fiance does it and he's great at it! He's a natural. It's a great job, and the pay is rewarding it just wasn't for me. But I'll eventually find my calling. I have nothing but respect for you guys now bc I see what you do and what you go through from your perspective now! It really does take a person with a strong mind and a willpower to keep striving. Thank you and take care, Sir!
I have been in sales for 30 years, after 10 years as an Ops Manager in the telecom industry. Outside Sales, Inside Sales, great salary plus commission, even commission only. It is great to meet new people and create relationships that remain for all those years. Salespeople have different reputations depending on the industry. It is hard work, so many calls that are forever ignored, people who do not show up for meetings and sales managers that don't have a clue what your job really is. But those commission checks make it all worth it.
I am in the sales department but my college degree is in marketing, I've been working for 2 years I've made only millions of sales selling engineering software. For me, sales are all about charisma, magnetism, and persuasion but for me, I've done it the introverted way and lowkey way that is why I survive my last year's goal. this 2nd half I can't keep up with the changes and the deadline, and my boss told me about my performance and that there will be reorganization due to underperformance this 2nd half, the company will lay off an underperforming employee and I am in the candidate. and right now I am making my resignation letter what I realized. not all people like this guy on youtube. I thought sales is in my blood but I am nervous as heck and have social anxiety. I don't have a strong personality like an alpha male vibe.

Came across this video, I'm in a career transition from creative production to sales. Couldn't be more excited, but also nervous! This video helped a bunch. I can't wait to start my new job!
I find that clients are mostly ok. My issue is with employers who do everything they can to prvent thier staff from earning commission. Greedy employers want you to work hard devote yourself to them, but they dont want to pay out.
I work in sales too, and I have to say that I wholly agree with what you have described in your video. Work never stops, even outside of the office and time off with family burns faster than a candle. Yet, I am proud of myself to be doing something that I always was afraid off until I tried it, it proved to me that I had a hidden potential that had to surface. For someone who passes 100 per cent of their time cold-calling and call emailing, I find it exrtemely rewarding when I convince prospect to hear what I have to offer and test out the waters and see how I can help them solve problems. Most rewarding part of the journey, is when a prospect says " You are doing a great job ! let's connect tomorrow"
would you recommend it for someone who has up til now done far more analytical technical work (e.g. software engineering) but wants to try something (seemingly?) on the other end of the spectrum?

To answer your questions, kinda outside of the box, if that person feel like they are wanting this, and they are willing for a change, shift in carrier, and they have grounds for it, then yes, I would recomend, it is indeed extremely rewarding, although it is just not for everyone. How to know? one should ask themselves why am I doing this, can I do this? and most importantly, what is my objective behind the shift. Very accurate portrayal of sales. It's freekin' hard! I find that the hardest part is managing your emotions. When the phone is ringing, I'm in my happy place. When it's not, my inner critic starts chirping at me about how I'm in the wrong career. It's a constant battle! Just showing up at an office and having the boss give you work to do sounds so appealing sometimes. Being in charge of your own success is exciting but also incredibly mentally challenging.

Sales is definitely the most important role in any business. Ultimately, you understand people and that is the most powerful thing. Imagine being dropped into any situation with people and being able to transact. Those skills are ones that will set you up for life, with other people's products or your own. It is quite normal to come across to some people as arrogant but you need to always have that energy, be positive to go from one call/appointment to another and stay in agreement. The qualities to do that are quite rare.
Not a salesman but I do know that you get out what you put in and my hat is off to you because in order to succeed the grind never stops and well my man Travis it doesn’t seem like that word is in your vocabulary. Keep up the good work man.

To me it only get interesting if you’re interested in the product you’re selling. I’m working for a reputable company but I don’t really have a feel for the product we’re selling. Also, because of the nature of the product, we are heavily focused on homogeneous B2B clients, which means 2 things, one, the work got pretty boring after a while, two, I acquire few transferrable skills that would help me advance in my career in the future. Thumbs up.. but by FAR not the best video on the channel! There's different sales.. are you selling something someone doesn't really need? Selling something that revolutionizes an industry or field? Selling something that saves someones company substantial money? Or selling the next new thing? All of those factors go into how a salesperson is recieved. Take you and PES. A product that's over saturated in the market, however, your genuine appeal, passion, excitement, and honesty, mixed with saving the consumer 30%, and the products revolutionary good taste, all combined into your success. If you legitimately have those same views about what your selling now. You'll be a success.. if not people will see through it. A quote I always held on to from my days in sales: "If you want to increase your rate of success, double your rate of failure" -Thomas Watson
You know i worked in sales for a company it was from 8am - 8pm. it was great and your right it didnt require much skill if any but just repetition. Recently i departed from the company and decided to start my own and work independantly. My goal is to get my self disiplined like how i was when i worked for that company.
The amount of senior people who have sat with me listening to calls who say I couldn't do what you do makes me laugh. The most poinent comment "You have to believe in what you sell " I have 3 product lines and I believe in 2 but know pressure coming to sell the one I don't so looks like a new role is required. Great video really honest.
I don't have experience in Sales, but I really do resonate with you on the concept of the grind. Sales runs the world. There’s a negative stigma to it but everyone sells in some form everyday even if it isn’t their job. I studied accounting in school when I realized a desk job wasn’t for me. @@Projectdarksource yeah and it depends on what you’re selling, this guy totally took the generic “proud hardworking salesman” mantra and ran with it. I think the intentions were super solid I get what he’s saying like he does his research he is prepared for work the next day, success is always at the back of his mind... but it’s the people in sales that overwork themselves to death that don’t make it. Sales is the most unsecured and hardest career for the following reasons. 1- Sales is a number game, if you don't achieve your monthly sales Quotas or simply Targets you will be out in 2-3 months time, job hunting 2- How hard you work, efforts you make, how friendly or honest to your prospective clients are no use and in vain if you don't archive your sales targets. 3- Your Manager is your best buddy as long as you archive or exceed the monthly sales targets, if you under perform or don't archive sales targets, you will be treated like dirt by your manager. 4- Your Qualifications or Degree certificates are just a piece of paper in a sales careers, cos if you want to progress in your company (promotion) or secure your job, Sales performance is the main factor for consideration.

I’ve worked in sales since 1992 and all the points you made I can agree with. It’s a great video and I love your passion for what your doing. The greatest Lession I have learned is missing from this video. Balance in life. It’s great to have drive, passion, work ethic and balance. To keep up the pace for a long time, 20-30 years is hard on your mind and body. Once you have a family of your own adjustments need to be made to prioritize energy for kids, partner and others in your life. Balance is talked about a lot I know and I believe the greatest mistake made is when I know what it is and I believe I can get to that once Im finished with x. The finished part never comes and because I believe I’m doing great and I know what balance is that I can grab it anytime I want. This is a danger zone, beware, be mindful and nothing is worth your mental or physical health from suffering.

People’s perception of sales is in a room wearing a suit with a power point presentation. What you don’t see is the 80 calls you made and the 10 appointments you scheduled to get into that room with that client.
Im pretty sure most see salespeople as going door to door or telemarketing getting you to buy something you would never think to purchase
People also don’t realize that consultants, attorneys, professional speakers are also sales professionals.
I am a professional speaker and leadership/team development coach..... I prospect every single day, every where I go.
80% of owning a business is sales and marketing.
@@stephaniem895 calling professional speakers and attorneys the same as salespeople is kind of insulting. Dont let them hear u say that
Kung-Fu Kenny i am a professional speaker and consultant..... also have family members that are corporate attorneys.... all are responsible for bringing in clients and building a book of business.
Business development is a huge part of many executives responsibility as well.
There are many ways to sell. It happens all the time in many professions. It’s not just the salesy used car sterotype.
Leadership development experts like John Maxwell all built their brand by selling.

Sales is the backbone of any company, be a proud sales executive because its an evergreen job..!!
On point. Its more than a job. Literally every entrepreneur had to learn this skill to be a success at every point in their life. Spot on!
Thanks for the info.
I would say, that's very true!
I respect salesmen like u
Bill gates?
Sales pitches don’t work. I’m one of the top sellers on my team and I never use a pitch.
I respectfully disagree.

Would you happen to be talking about Spectrum cable and internet? I recently applied and they want to interview me. How’d you like working there? Did you start off as a DSR? What’s the warning potential like?
With that attitude you’re going to do just fine 😄
Hey there, just read your comment from a year ago. How are you getting on? Hope life's been kind. Update us on how you are doing. 🙂👍🏼🙏

I love rude clients, favorite part of my day.
I did this internship that made me do 50 cold calls everyday and I still couldn't get paid because the targets were almost impossible. When we stopped working, the boss used to shout at us. Man, if you want your employees to work hard, atleast pay them enough.

@@elcapitan6126 First, I would like to apologize for my late response, I rarely have time to check. If they have got all the answers and they are solid, then go for it !

All of those factors go into how a salesperson is recieved.

@@kara2162 It would really help if your could mentor me. How can I connect with you?
Haven’t been on RUclips in a while but a long time follower and this is my first comment on a video haha. Glad to see you’re enjoying the transition. This video summarized it perfectly. Sales runs the world. There’s a negative stigma to it but everyone sells in some form everyday even if it isn’t their job. I studied accounting in school when I realized a desk job wasn’t for me. Sales has been the best move of my life and everyone told me I was crazy for not going for a comfy base salary at a bank out of school(studied finance and insurance/risk mgmt). Now I control my schedule and what I do. The lows are low but the highs are so high and that’s part of the fun. Seeing the fruits of your labor is amazing. You never know how hard it is til you do it. End rant. Best of luck man!
Thank you !
Another wonderful comment!
Yeap, you're a sales guy alright... I just watched 5 minutes and 11 seconds of pure spin... including you justify stalking a girl for an entire year.
You mean my fiancé ?
@@BusinessAndFitness lol good one
He said “texted” not hiding between cars and bushes with binoculars. Funny.
@@BusinessAndFitness Amazing! That was the cliffhanger of the story! How did you know she'd come around? Or did you just take a risk?
@@cmaccarter93 haha it just took persistence and the right timing! We get married next august
Very informative and kinda touching video! Nice seeing another perspective of your life! Keep up the great work!
I appreciate your enthusiasm dude, but that sounds like some terrible work/life balance.
Yup! But who are you to say what balance is for my life ? It will be different for everyone. Best of luck to you!
@@BusinessAndFitness What are the work hours for a salesman? Does it differ from Company to company?
@@Projectdarksource yeah and it depends on what you’re selling, this guy totally took the generic “proud hardworking salesman” mantra and ran with it. At the end of the day sales is just a numbers game, more shots you take more shots you make. The people that can achieve consistent numbers in a decent livable time frame are the people that go far. I think the intentions were super solid I get what he’s saying like he does his research he is prepared for work the next day, success is always at the back of his mind... but it’s the people in sales that overwork themselves to death that don’t make it. Either figure out the number game or find a new career... in my opinion...
@@Projectdarksource I have some busy weeks where I put in 12 hr days (including drive time), but I typically work around 40 hrs a week. When I let off the gas and am relaxed and refreshed is when I've landed my best deals. When I push too hard I tend to hit a rut and it's very frustrating. I feel like my clients can feel when I'm desperate and tired. It doesn't work for me. I'm also a Mom and a wife and that helps me keep work in check big time.
Thank you for this video. I want to become a salesman, and I have my self-doubts, but seeing your video made me realize that in life you need to push yourself to be better or you will never know what your true potential or true happiness will be.
Exactly !
It's 4:30 and I'm eating a burito watching this.
Covid Lockdown did it's work :D
I just can't with this job. it makes me want to vomit continously. I'm quitting on friday
Sales is the most unsecured and hardest career for the following reasons.
1- Sales is a number game, if you don't achieve your monthly sales Quotas or simply Targets you will be out in 2-3 months time, job hunting
2- How hard you work, efforts you make, how friendly or honest to your prospective clients are no use and in vain if you don't archive your sales targets.
Hmmmm, that is so legit
People go into debt in getting a degree hoping they can go from a school desk to an office desk and avoid the construction site or sales.
I used to work for GNC as a salesperson, the only bad thing is when you’re actually aware of what supplement ingredients do, you know you’re not selling as high quality products as the almighty PEScience 😂

Travis, I work in sales a representative/ account manager and have been for more then 4 years of a industry I’ve been in for 15 year and I think you nailed it, outsiders see it as we drive around all day drinking office but though that happens is fair from the truth, with working no longer 9 - 5 but you work anytime as required for you work for your customers and not yourself
I don’t work in salsa but damn that video was pretty sick man
Hahaha just saw this...I want chips and salsa now
Inspiring video once again.
You really strive to achieve your goals Trav. Thanks for the indirect push I need to get my professional career underway once I finish my degree in a few weeks time 🎓
Texting a girl for a year to get her to hang out with him once was the best decision of his life? I think that's for foreshadowing that he has a lady 😍😀
Briana Gobel wow. Good work, captain obvious.
Hello from Oklahoma ! I just saw your video and everything you stated is so spot on every day is a consistent grind for the successful sales person. Thanks for the video!
Sales is damn hard I mean hardest of hard very stress i worked for 2 month I got pstd

Amazing words of wisdom
@@BusinessAndFitness I appreciate that Travis, thanks!
Ok well you're not "selling" this lifestyle to me!
Don’t need to, it’s not for everyone
I’m a 21 year old mortgage agent I’m so happy to be able to help people! With their mortgage needs. It is stressful but I love it, I love working with people and helping them. I hope in the future I will make a good living off it never quit.
I could never work sales. I would be forever depressed
