The Bronze Age collapse has always been fascinating to me, partly because of how little we actually know, and partly just how fragile complex, highly interconnected civilizations appear to be. I think we can learn a lot from further study of this period.
No idea why youtube recommended me this but glad I found it, very well made and well researched stuff, reminds me of the early Stefan Milo videos keep it up my man
I enjoyed your analysis and you are on my subscriptions list. I see future historical insights coming from archeological research and dramatic finds. I appreciate your interpretation of evidence in support your conclusions.
always found it interesting the Sea Peoples made attacks on Egypt in 1207 BCE and then again in 1177 BCE, it certainly shows intent, If one things about it, in the Homer text on the siege of Troy, during that decade the Greeks were actively raiding other cities and city states around region, perhaps far afield as time went on, to supplement the army active in the siege, and in so doing they would indeed be part of a "sea people" coming and raiding differing folk, just one example of what was going on at that time, as well as those folk from Sardinia etc. Migrations of peoples, over time, is a fascinating thing and well worth study, such as this example, the time period of early Anatolia Neolithic folk/farmers or proto-farmers, the people that built such places as Gobekli Tepe and how thru time their migrations west, into Europe and along different routes into and becoming EEF, European farmers that still built megalithic sights, thru many thousands of years, going from Gobekli Tepe to Stonehenge, fascinating !
I think the Sea Peoples were the Greeks. Their armor and dress is an identical match to the Mycenaeans. We also have from this time period many Greek legends of the Greeks going abroad and conquering from Jason and the Argonauts, The Trojan War, Dionysus going East, and Perseus in Ethiopia.
Wait a minute. I thought Indo--Europeans were the ancestors of Romans, Greeks & all Europeans. If Maspero is wrong, who are these people in the Med in 2 millennium BC? The population the preceded PIE? Like EEF or WHG possibly? I don’t really understand history of populations that far back
Tbh, Bronze Age History is surprisingly not talked about much. It was only after years of studying history that I was introduced to it and only in the last year have I really got down to reading about it. Which is a shame because we've seen recently with the Pandemic how fragile our world can be if hit by something unexpected, which makes the history of the Bronze Age Collapse seem more relevant than ever
I'm not sure where I heard this idea, but I have integrated it into my understanding of the Bronze Age Collapse and I'm curious if I should discard it since I don't recall the source. Could it have been that they were invited in? A vanguard landing in the levant and settling, then those people are all like yo fam, there is this whole bronze age world over here why don't yall come over and ruin it with us?
quite possibly. I didn't mention it in the video, but we know that the Hittites and Egyptians had contact with the Shardana a good 50 years prior to the first waves of Sea People. At this point they seem to have been working as mercenaries for both empires during their war with each other. It's quite possible that after the war was over and they no longer had lucrative work in the area, they invited their communities from home to join them in raiding/finding a place to settle.
The German historians' ideas are clearly based on also the mercenary problem that the Romans went through and also the English had when they invited the Saxons over and didn't pay them. I think the idea is that if it happened twice it could certainly have happened before that.
To me it seems as if the sea people are running from a much bigger and scarier group and end up having to sack these other cities just to survive. It's like the German tribes running from the Huns. Like I said in my earlier comment you never leave out the steppe people's as a possible initial cause as far away as they were. I know it's probably not likely but they have such a history of doing things like this. It's like a row of dominoes and you never know which was the first to topple.
JSYK, not to get your hopes up or anything (and I don't even know if you'd really want this) but I just suggested your channel to Nebula, the streaming service. You've been doing great stuff for a while now, but The Algorithm™ is sleeping on you for some reason. Really, this comment is more just in case they check your videos out, I want them to know you didn't suggest yourself, but that you do have subs who really believe in your work. Fingers crossed!
Xenophobic and Racist are not the same. Lovecraft feared anyone not from Rhode Island and as the influence of his somewhat wacky family waned, so did his unreasonable fears. But you knew that. Picking low hanging fruit, standing close to the target, shotgun fishing. Expect better.
Yeah bro I know to wel what British did when they cut of the Iranian oil 😜😜for anyone’s don’t know it they platheid a coupe that kild our newly built democratic monarchy which them self enjoyed it very much 🤮🤮🤮

Not to mention Odysseus' story of going to Egypt. Puts in mind a sort of Mykenaean "Age of Adventure" of sorts.

It was me and my niggas bro
On a more serious note, I've never heard the history of sea people's theory over the years. That in itself says a lot about history.

The Sea Peoples were descendents of Egyptians + the Achaean Denyen allies.

Nope, you look entirely too put together for this video, what happened to my favorite homeless historian? ;-)
