      Make the perches wooden, like natural, not metal, it'll get warm/cold in weather and it can give bumble foot

    Love the new coop but come winter you might need to wrap the roosting with rope otherwise the chicken's would stick to the cold metal 😮

    • @FusRoDarshinae

      I would attach flat wooden boards on top of them. a flat roost prevents pressure points which in turn prevents bumblefoot

    I love the way you treat your kids. You allow them to participate in every aspect of farm life because you know they are capable. You expect them to be capable and they know you are there for them and will back them up. They see their work turn into completed projects that are useful and necessary. They are secure in the knowledge that they are important and to the farm and in your lives. Kudos. Their eagerness to be involved from the smallest to the biggest is a joy to watch.

    The new coop looks like good, but it might need some adjustments for them before cold weather hits. I'm glad the peacocks can get outside, look around and get into the fresh air. They have plenty of room in their coop/shed. It's nice that Cook Unity can be heated in the oven and doesn't require special equipment. The meals looked delicious.

    Wow, that coop looks pretty cool. Not as grandiose as the ayam cemanis' coop, but it's spacious enough for big chickens. I guess there are quite inconvenience in the design of the nesting box.. like why would there be a need to cut through the tarp and the hardwire cloth for the nesting box... The roosting bars made out of metal would be a little concerning when winter comes
    Love to see your kids helping on building the coops.

By the time they are in thier late teen's, they will be very well familiar with using thier hands and tools with confidence. A great help to you Jake and Rebecca too! The chickens look really happy and so do the Mandarin's. It's a good thing you bought a large property, it gives you lots of room to do whatever you need. Cross the Bresse chicken with the Indio, see if you get a larger meat chicken that does produce good eggs?😁

  • @pamelahofman1785

    You mention predators and I know you've lost animals to them so I'm wondering why you don't have livestock guardian dogs like other farms? You have Joey the Australian Shephard but her breed is more for herding than protecting. I also follow Raventree Ranch and their LGDs have a 100% success rate for keeping livestock safe. Would something like that work for you?

    • @dollipop12
      @dollipop12 22 дня назад +1

      Livestock guardians come with their own risks, especially with birds. No dog breed was ever bred to protect poultry. None. In rural eastern European and Asian historical use of LGDs, this was a well-known fact that they would occasionally snatch unsecured chickens. They would even allow chickens to hatch extra eggs just to account for it. Even a good dog that has never attacked a bird could have their brain go from play to prey very quickly. LGDs also just don't work for specific properties. Too small a property your lgd is going to roam off your property and potentially become a risk to neighbors dogs/animals, risk to themselves (hit by cars, shot, stolen), or at risk of being overpowered by predators (5 coyotes vs 1 dog). Too large a property, and you need several pairs of lgd that have their own adequate space and responsibilities and schedules.
      Training an lgd is also not for everyone and is the biggest mistake new to lgd people make. They think they can just throw a 12 week old lgd puppy outside, and it will know what to do. It won't. It may have instincts to act a specific way, but without an older lgd or its owner to teach it its job, it's just another puppy. Training lgds is not easy, especially the first 2 years. Most people want a drop and forget solution and a domestic predator species that requires at least 2 yrs of training, constant maintenance, food, water, tons of grooming, adequate bonding to the herd they are protecting, and some level of socialization with other lgds or people.
