I just received one of your 5’ furled leaders and absolutely love it! I’ve added 4’ of #3 tippet. It sets at the end of my 6 Wt. Flip line. “Gosh, I sound like an ad for MRO. lol All kidding aside, I wish I’d tried it sooner.
P.S. I use the tippet ring. A great addition!

@@Madriveroutfitters Yes. Grabbed a rod when I was in the 3rd grade and self-taught so many bad habits that persist decades later.

I'm a small-stream, dry fly fishing type. When I was a kid, I discovered that I could use my limited budget spinning rod to cast a dry fly. Now, I do the same thing. Using an ultralight 5.5' spinning rod, I employ a leader with about a 7-foot butt section of 30-lbs (very slender .021-inch) monofilament behind a typical 7-foot leader (I use a 4x or 3x tippet to keep my loop wide). It desirably lacks power, but, it will bow-cast with authority, precision, and grace. Scientifically speaking, same spinning rod, with a much bulkier weight-forward 2wt. PVC fly line is a fine set-up, just for casting into the wind, for river-type distances, or for casting more massive flies - tons of V-8 power that won't calm down. My fly rods, with typical floating line and leader set-ups tend to generate significantly more physical havoc on the stream-surface when casting (slap), line mending, line retrieve, and hook-set. My suggestion, if you are fishing for trout or other small game-fish, is to employ enough heavy mono between the leader and fly line that you aren't using so much fly line to cast with, or that the fly line basically remains spooled-up.

Really wish you guys would carry some that have shorb loops. It works way better than tippet rings and snelling line.

To me, it doesn’t seem like a small tippet ring would slap the water any more than the furled leader itself would - after all, a furled leader is wide and rough compared to mono. Also, and this is important, not all tippet rings are the same. I have tried several brands. Look at them under a microscope or hand lens, and you will understand - several brands are like a washer, with sharp edges, rather than smooth, which will weaken your knot. So, be careful which ones you buy. I am still looking for a brand that’s real smooth, the Climax rings seem to be OK but not sure they are made any more.

I don't care for the rings myself and I only fish warmwater. I do use loop to loop connections and have for many years. I am considering trying the leader advised by Flip. Who am I to argue with Flip. Bass fishing in thick stuff or fishing heavy bass bugs I just use a short heavy leader. Maybe 20# or more possibly depending on the obstruction.

With warmwater being "contact" fly fishing, Brian would agree....no need for tippet rings. Feel free to reach out to Brian directly as he states here and he'll be happy to help with your leader construction.

@@Madriveroutfitters I saw that much in the video. But what are they used for? Why would you use one instead of a tapered leader or sectional leader and tippet? I was hoping you had a video addressing that and I just didn't find it in looking through the channel's video list.
PS: can't wait for the new combo to get here. That was 5 Star order processing.
