Thank you for doing this, I feel like I got a lot out of it as a beginner digital painter. 🙂
It's wonderful to watch but do you also have some similar videos (or can you suggest any) for those of us who are more at a beginner level in landscape digital painting - I'm really curious about the brushes you are using and how it looks like you are adding "brushes" that are pre-made, like branches, and then are able to erase parts of those? When I do digital art I get so bogged down in my details because I am sure I don't know a lot of the time-saving steps yet. Thanks :)
Hey jupitergal, glad you liked the vid! You can grab some of my most used brushes in the more recent videos, there is a free link in the description, you can experiment with those for sure. I think I even placed there some premade vegetation brushes. If you are practicing you will definitely get there in terms of speed. But for sure I think, I will make a video focusing on beginner tips in photoshop, like hotkeys and all that stuff. Good luck with your painting practice, hope to see you again!
excellent tutorial, only thing I would have liked is more explanation maybe on techniques and how and why you are doing certain things, but i learned a lot, especially watching the colours you pick. made me realise i use too much saturation even tho i dont use much. keep them coming please!! :)
Phenomenal video! I subscribed less than 2 minutes in, and I can tell you now, I believe your channel will be huge when more people start finding it. There aren't a lot of really great concept art videos out there, so yours are a godsend.
this is a really helpful video! I’m trying to get into landscape illustration, but i usually just mess around with it for a while before I get lazy and stop, mostly because I realize I messed up layering and I don’t know how to fix them. Do you have any tips for layering? I always think I start getting lost about when I’m starting to render and clean
Thank you! Glad it was helpful. About the layers, I guess you could simplify this part a bit, so it's not too overwhelming. At first, try identifying the three main layers(foreground, middle ground, and background ) If the composition works, you can build on top of them, or continue making adjustments. I will definitely elaborate on this in future videos. Also, if you can check the book Alla Prima VOLII by Schmid, really helped me understand some things, especially landscape painting, whatever is written there can be applied in digital.
This is very helpful. But maybe more for intermediate or pro. I’m more beginner kinda with photoshop when it comes to digital painting and def perspective is not one of my strengths but I’m getting better. Do you have an actual step by step class or video that slows down a bit and talks about the things you did in this vid?
Something that would be great if you could add is telling us the name of the brushes you use while you use them in the video. Otherwise, great art!!!!!
What's your recommendation for an aspiring illustrator to use between Photoshop and Procreate on the iPad? I'm a graphic designer and I mainly use Adobe Illustrator and not really much of Photoshop at all. I hope to create works similar to this or portraits and don't know which to use. Photoshop has more control and I know how to navigate around the program better but Procreate allows me to use my Apple Pen which just feels much more normal for drawing or painting. Any feedback would be great and very much appreciated. This all sounds basic for a graphic designer but I'm more familiar with logos, vector illustration, and building websites than I am with digital art.
Hi! It's super cool you want to go in-depth with digital painting and I understand your concern. The good news is that the skills you will practice in procreate for example, are quite interchangeable with photoshop. Especially the process you see on this channel, I am trying to use only the basic tools, that are available in procreate and all the other ios apps (even the brushes are transferable). So learning painting is not an issue, the approach might differ a bit, that's all. Another question is your ability to deliver professional work later on, in house or freelance, for some areas photoshop is an industry-standard, like concept art and matte painting. Areas where you have to do more complex manipulations, besides painting. But let's put it this way if you are good at painting in procreate on ipad, if any situation arises and you have to do it in Photoshop then with a bit of adjustment you will be able to do that there as well, easily.
The quality of your videos definitely deserve some more recognition! I also was wondering if you had a reference image because I've heard it's always important to have one. Also do you use an iPad, drawing tablet, etc.? Thank you in advance 🙂
Hi Lei, thank you for watching! Yes, regarding reference images, it's always good to do some research about your subject matter beforehand. For this one, I had some images with with snow and maybe a few of some forest. Helps when you need to refresh memory about smaller details. I work on cintiq, but specifically for this workflow ipad would work just the same.
Hey Jane! It's great you ordered the tablet! The journey is not that difficult, just takes a bit of time and proper educational materials. Nothing out of the ordinary. I will also try to make some videos with art fundamentals in mind, which might be more helpful for someone just starting.

Awesome, thanks! Yeah, light and shadow are quite important topics, will definitely talk more about it in upcoming videos. By the way, in recent upload, I think I mentioned more about it as well.
Thank you for joining in! I am using photoshop, it's the most commonly used software in the industry right now. The process I use in these videos is applicable to any software, as well as free ones like Krita, which is also popular. If we're talking in general, you will also need a drawing tablet, Wacom Intuos is the most widely used, but there are other brands that have the same functionality for a much cheaper price, like Huion for example(with minor differences). Feel free to ask anything else, hope it helps.
@@VictorStaris thank you for the information, this is for my daughter who wants to do graphic design, we have computer and PS, just wondering what is a good drawing pad for her to use to draw as well make graphics. Would you say Huion would be a good choice to start with? I guess it should be quite responsive.
@@irynarowlands4012 great, yes in terms of responsiveness huion vs wacom intuos, they are pretty much the same, the build quality is what differs a bit. So for an absolute starter kit you can get a huion H610PRO V2 for example, size is up to you. Also you might want to check your local prices, there are wacom models at cheaper price as well, still not as cheap at huions for the same features.
@@irynarowlands4012 Personally, at work I have a drawing tablet so I look at the computer screen, at home I have a wacom cintiq. Pen displays like wacom one are better for drawing clean lines, and gesture drawing, it's easier to pick up drawing on them. Drawing tablets give you the advantage of your arm not obscuring the monitor but takes more time to get used to it, and its harder to do linework. Botom line pen displays like wacom one feel more natural. I guess you can always get it, try it out and if it doesn't work out return it.
I love this. It's just a great format, you're a natural speaker and teacher, and the finished painting is lovely. My only criticism is about the foreground tree that passes all the way through to under the frame. I think it wasn't a great compositional choice. The piece would be stronger with it anchoring the ground and bringing the camera to a lower, parallel plane with the snow. Or just removed entirely to not bisect the painting at a 5th since it runs the entire vertical length. Again, excellent video and art.
Thank you, I don't quite remember, since I have them for a long time. But you can grab them for free, I've put a link in my last video, brush pack with some of my most used brushes, and the tree branches are also there. Feel free to download them and let me know what do you think.

Hey BlitZZ, Thanks for watching! Sorry I took some time to answer, it's quite a complex question, hard to get a definitive answer. There a few factors worth mentioning and most important are money and time. Online classes are a pretty safe way to start I guess, there are many CGMA, schoolism, focalpoint, learnsquared and others. Try looking into the ones that have the introduction to digital painting or fundamentals of digital painting. So usually 1 class will run you for about 450$ to ~700$. They are structured I think 5 to 7 weeks, each week has a video lesson, some homework, and then a 20 min or so session where the lecturer gives you feedback on your homework. The effectiveness of these courses is directly proportional to you willingness to put in time, preferably way more than the assignment requires. The fundamentals you mentioned like, perspective, colour ... etc are flooded with free content on youtube for example as well. My favourite channel for concept art is "FZD" check it out it's a goldmine of information, very underrated. So if you have some money to spare, and you specifically want a professional to look over your homework and point out mistakes, then sure try out online classes like the ones i mentioned. You can continue like that till you have understanding of fundamentals, then you can go on by yourself. Using free material online, or buying separate tutorials from industry professionals ( "Foundation group" on patreon for example). Have a critical eye for your body of work and compare it with industry standards. It's a very incomplete answer but hope it helps you with understanding the whole thing a bit

Hey Sparks! Thanks for watching! Yes you are absolutely right, sometimes later I noticed a lot of people are watching it on phones and tablets, so I started to edit the video so its more zoomed in on the action!
Victor... Dude... You call this a tutorial and then you basically fail to provide ANY instruction. You should have called this a 'watch-along' or a 'demonstration.' You're blazing through each of the elements of the process without talking at all about the wise use of layers. Almost all the intricate decision-making and vertical layout components are taking place in the layers palatte and you don't say a dang thing about it. You did a great job with your digital painting - don't get me wrong. However, in terms of a TUTORIAL, this project falls flat on its face. If you're not underscoring the importance and philosophy of WHY you're doing WHAT you're doing, then you're not a very good teacher.
Hi there! Thanks for checking the vid! Yes, I have to agree, in the earlier videos I wasn't letting myself talk too much, for some reason wasn't so easy at first. Eventually I did increase the voice over significantly in more recent videos. Still there is space for improvement, especially that sometimes I pay attention to things that beginners for example don't, and vice versa. Thanks for your points, I will definitely consider a longer video, with more guidance.
@@VictorStaris thanks, victor. I feel heard by you. In retrospect & re-reading my own comment, to it comes across as harsh. Sorry about that. I drink it seems from watching a lot of "painting tutorials" that fall short of actual explaining. I shouldn't have taken my frustration on you. We are all learning & growing. You've already gotten better at explaining & voice-overs & that's an achievement. Thanks

Hi, Thanks for watching! I see, well in case you ever switch to photoshop, I have a free link with my brushes in my recent videos, and in case you work in Procreate you can import them there as well. I also plan to do videos with just a few basic brushes so that it's more relatable for other apps with limited brushes. By the way, what app are you using?
How can I get your brushes?
Hi! Thanks for watching! You can check more recent videos, I have a free link with some of my brushes in the description.
The art is beautiful but it was pretty hard for me to understand how you shaded
Thank you! I am still adjusting some things with the format, hopefully will get them more engaging and clear in some cases.
Which Brushes do you use?
Hi there, thanks for joining in! Some brushes I just found on the internet, but mostly use just a few, the ones from Jama Jurabaev and John Park (I downloaded from their gumroads a while ago)
2secs in and I recognise the game and where it is.
beautiful painting and video. it was really relaxing but informative also. I downloaded your brush set and wanted to say thank you!
RIP this - Dalle and midjourney took over overnight
App?
Hi StealthyArcher, thanks for watching! The app I use is Photoshop on PC, the pipeline is also the same for any other app like Procreate or Clipstudio. If you want some photoshop brushes I use, I have a free link in the description of more recent videos. Thanks, hope to see you again
Which application is this
Jk I saw you respond to someone else that asked the same thing.
Glad you stopped by! Yeah I work in Photoshop, but the process is the same for Procreate or Clip Studio as well!
Why would you not show us the brushes you are using?
What software
Hey there! Thanks for watching, I use photoshop, but this process is the same for clip studio, or procreate
Background music?
Hi, thanks for watching! I use epidemicsound for the background music
@@VictorStaris thnx! by the way, your art is amazing, big things coming your way.
I can think of far easier ways to draw digital?
I like it a lot, but it's so zoomed out!
Hey Sparks! Thanks for watching! Yes you are absolutely right, sometimes later I noticed a lot of people are watching it on phones and tablets, so I started to edit the video so its more zoomed in on the action!

Thank you so much for watching! I hope you'll enjoy the future videos
Jesus loves you all
Bro never showed how 😭 this is not a. Perfect tutorial
Victor...
Thanks
