Green Mossy Banks
When the land whispers
Don’t be a stranger
That irresistible call to come home
To the wandering swear an allegiance
Renew an old contract to roam
I felt in my heart a great yearning
Leave a life so beholden to time
So I packed up my promise
To face the uncertain
To attend to lost loves and landlines
Seven miles I will walk so uncertain
Seven miles I will walk in delight
Seven miles inconsolable mourning
Seven more unquestionably right
Some miles my heart will be empty
Some miles I will rage and I’ll cry
Some miles I will crawl like a motherless baby
But the last mile I will take to the sky
Let journeys outshine destinations
Intuition out destin our fears
Let blisters be teachers
With blessings bestowed
Let the darkness restore us as seers
I’ll make these pathways my companions
Be witnessed by what cannot be seen
Be peregrine, be pasture, be tiny, be vaster
Be as soft as green moss and be free
When the commission to write songs for the feature film ‘The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry’ came through, many songs flowed, some making the film and others not. Green Mossy Banks was written distinctly in response to that stunning tale and the oldest practice of all when facing life's deep questions to make pilgrimage. The story inspired me to reflect on how walking will forever be the greatest form of self-discovery and answer-finding. Despite this song not eventually making it into the film it remains for me a proclamation song that sits within this album's suite of stories musing upon how the land offers many remedies to our sorrows and ills. Walking is the tonic that heals the heart in the most profound of ways. This song was written out of the many miles made on pilgrimage myself when I’ve partaken in the most intimate and ancestral gesture I know to restore and reinvigorate one's never-ending search for be-lief and re-lief. As remedies go, intentional walking of the land is the one that works deepest and holds in the body's memory the longest.
here's to the blessed journeying of the beloveds ✨💜✨
Good to meet you today at Green Scythe Fair. So true re walking - we were healed after a great trauma in our life and this wonderful quote rang true: “Above all, do not lose your desire to walk. Everyday, I walk myself into a state of well-being & walk away from every illness. I have walked myself into my best thoughts, and I know of no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it. But by sitting still, & the more one sits still, the closer one comes to feeling ill. Thus if one just keeps on walking, everything will be all right.” Soren Kierkegaard. Will defo watch the film. Best wishes, Rob (Rivers Of England)
Gorgeous and triumphant! Please consider coming to America. ❤
Last time I know a brilliant UK band came to US - Hers- 💜- only ~25 yrs old, them & tour manager were hit & killed in their tour van by a reckless driver in Arizona. Wow great job USA. Paris never killed any of the American geniuses who had to run away from the US to save their lives & careers. Miles Davis was healthy & happy in Paris before he came back to US & got beat in the head by cops for standing on the sidewalk under his own billboard, on his own set break. Even today, I get the impression that a lot of American artists prefer touring overseas. Like Jim White for example lives in FL/from there, and he just goes and plays in the UK & about for a few months and like three shows in US. Mr. Sam Lee might like the Appalachians & Ozarks though, amoung other natural wonders. Come vaca and don’t drive, drivers are crap in the US they will literally kill you for an extra five minutes or to prove their vehicle is larger, faster, stronger.
I think this is my favourite so far. Such a stunning tribute to the journey of pilgrimage, the wonderful days we have shared, the sacred places we have honoured and that have honoured us and the beautiful people we have met on the pathways and shared our stories and joy, tears and silence with.
😢
Beautifully sang and arranged as always with just a hint of Arvo Pärt's "Spiegel im Spiegel".
I have never heard anything as beautiful as this! Oh, my heart!
I adore this song, so beautiful in every way and because listening to this today I have discovered Sam Lee. What a gem. Feeling happy and inspired to walk and paint. Thank you Sam Lee.
Inspiring, I will go camping this weekend and sing for anyone who listens, my next 7 miles lie ahead ❤
