i love how they mention Australian history of recognizing in the first verse the native people of Australia, " i come from the dream time, from the dusty red soil plains" and then about the colonization of Australia "i stood upon the rocky shore,i watched the tall ships come" the it goes on to recognise the struggle of the bushies and battlers, meaning those that live on farms and people who work hard to make a dollar, and yes i was raised in small country towns in Australia so i totally relate to it
Judith Durham the female singer in this band had a Lung problem all her life and really had only 1 good lung all her life and would cough before going on stage and would still sing with all she had,Australians love her still even though she died of her lung problem
the people mentioned in the song. Albert Namatjira was an Arrernte painter from the MacDonnell Ranges in Central Australia, widely considered one of the most notable Australian artists. As a pioneer of contemporary Indigenous Australian art, he was arguably one of the most famous Indigenous Australians of his generation Clancy on his horse most likely relates to the poem Clancy of the overflow "Clancy of the Overflow" is a poem by Banjo Paterson, first published in The Bulletin, an Australian news magazine, on 21 December 1889. The poem is typical of Paterson, offering a romantic view of rural life, and is one of his best-known works. and Ned Kelly on the Run, Edward Kelly was an Australian bushranger, outlaw, gang leader, and convicted police-murderer. One of the last bushrangers, he is known for wearing a suit of bulletproof armor during his final shootout with the police The one that Waltz Matilda = The title was Australian slang for traveling on foot (waltzing) with one's belongings in a "matilda" (swag) slung over one's back. ( like a backpack) The song narrates the story of an itinerant worker, or "swagman", making a drink of billy tea at a bush camp and capturing a stray jumbuck (sheep) to eat.
Had the white man not come to Australia , Albert would have been doing his paintings on cave walls ! And why do you even QUESTION it was Clancy of the Overflow, of COURSE it was. ExAMINATION Of Ned Kelly revelas him as a thug, not so though, other bushrangers like Fred Ward, Ben Hall , Gilbert and a GOOD line in a poem says " there's never a stone at the sleepers head, but even the youngest child on the waershed can tell you how Gilbert died."
I am an Australian and want to thank you for your sincere reaction to this wonderful song. It should be my country's national anthem. What a great line "we are one, but we are many". It is as good as John Lennon's lyric "no countries to live or die for" in the song Imagine.
You're right, the line "we are one, but we are many" is inspirational. It invokes a feeling of togetherness and should be our national anthem, in my opinion. We still do have a lot of work to do when it comes to our indigenous Australians, our governments have allowed people to treat them poorly and I'm sure I will get responses from some that will dispute what I am saying but the facts are clear. As for The Seekers, they were a massive hit in the 60s having huge hits that were competing with The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.
Eddy Thanks for reacting to the Seakers, I grew up listening to them it brings a tear to most Australians hearing it, sadly Judith Durham left us but her voice will remain in our hearts forever, this should be our national anthem best wishes 💙
Should be Australian national anthem it says everything sung wonderfully rip Judith you and your voice are missed we'll done Bruce Woodley for writing this song if you agree let me know
Eddy mate, the first verse was about our indigenous peoples, they're the oldest race on Earth & they've actually been here 60,000 years. The second verse was about the convicts/criminals/prisoners from the UK that were sentenced their terms to the colony. The UK's prisons were overcrowded & that's why they were sent here but majority of the convicts were petty thieves & once their term was up they then were free to go back to the UK or stay here & the majority stayed here. They were even gifted land by the Governor to become farmers for a fresh start for the convicts. Also something that not many know, even a lot of Aussie's wouldn't know is that when people back in the UK found out about that in most colonies, especially the first fleet weren't actually locked away in cells, they were allowed to roam free, live in there own little houses still being feed & given the necessities while still doing their convict time of more or less building a country, people in the UK actually committed petty crimes just to be sentenced to the colony so they could have a fresh start to life & try to be as successful as possible by turning their lives around
The Australian aboriginals are not the oldest continuous race on Earth. Genetically and geographically, the Khoisan people of Africa who have inhabited their lands for a current estimate of between 150,000 and possibly 260,000 are the oldest surviving peoples on Earth. This is followed by the Sentilenese Islands of India. Yes, the Australian Aboriginals are an ancient race but despite their claims of being the world’s oldest, facts prove otherwise.
not quite like that - there was nowhere to roam around - they initially lived in camps surrounded by British soldiers - they were scared shitless with the indigenous people that they could hear but never see so no one ever ventured into the bush - you make it sound like a holiday which it was not - they were govern by ruthless soldiers who could do whatever they wanted to do with them -and god forbid if you were a single female - you really need to read the real history of what the first convicts endured that were sent to Australia

lovely reaction! :)
He was talking about the indigenous peoples who have now been found to have been here for 65 000 years before the British prisoners arrived.

It’s such a pity that other countries don’t adopt this message ‘we are one but we are many and from all the lands on earth we come’ 🥰
Onya Eddy!
The Aboriginal indigenous people were here for thousands of years before the English came. Acknowledging this significance was special & necessary.
