  • It was only around from 1999 to 2009 but the S2000 is a sports car many of us miss for many reasons but at top of the list... "Red line at 9,000 rpm!" Amen!
    Here’s Graeme’s memories!
"I first drove the S2000 in Japan at Honda’s Tochigi proving grounds. Two laps into the drive it became very clear this was one special car - it was light, tight and had the sweetest manual gearbox ever produced. Better yet, the higher the engine revved the more fun it became to drive. It also had a delightful trait. The trailing throttle oversteer saw the tail pivot around heading into a corner, but in this case it was progressive and easily controlled. It was destined to be a collectable even before it hit the road in Canada. It is as though Porsche recognized the S2000’s potential and produced the Boxster in its image!"

I absolutely adore my 2000 s2k and have no plans of selling it, even if the average prices keep blowing up.

my all original low mileage AP1 S2000 sits pristine as its value goes up, while those who butcher these cars help bring my value up.... much thanks

Graeme, The digital speedo is one of the best parts of this car. I understand an analog tach to see the needle sweep while you are shifting gears but a digital speedometer will and always will be better than a analog speedo. The reason is you get your speed reading at just a glance, It's immediately right there where as an analog speedometer you look at the needle and then you have to look at the numbers after you look at the needle so it's 2 things you have to do instead of just a quick glance with a digital dash.

It's been said that the first to market becomes the most recognized and popular, even if it's not as good as competitors that come out later, like with minivans, the Dodge Caravan was always the sales leader, and cheaper. I guess that's why the lower priced Mazda Miata (which came out first), was more popular, though neither is all that common on the roads today, but I definitely see more Miatas on the road than S2000s. Even the name is better.

Though it certainly wasn't the first roadster, the Miata is the best selling sports car of all time. Mazda has sold well over a million Miata's and are still making them. Conversely Honda sold less than 1/10th that amount when it comes to the S2000 (with fewer than 67K cars making it to the USA). While Mazda was relying on the Miata being a strong sales success, Honda being a much larger outfit had the luxury of designing the S2000 to be more of a niche vehicle in celebration of their own success. As the video noted, the S2000 was intended to compete with the likes of the Porsche Boxster and the BMW Z3, not the Miata.
The S2000 will always be viewed as the special car that it is by most sports car fans and they are already very hard to find in decent condition (if at all) in many places. Meanwhile, Mazda has cranked out so many Miata's that people wanting a great roadster for cheap will always be able to count on finding a Miata for as long as gas remains available or until the internal combustion engine is banned from the road. Both cars are a blessing to roadster fans, each in their own way.

2:00 Clearly this guy has never heard of motorcycle engines. Even in the late 90s, 600cc sport bikes were making almost 120hp. Better hp/displacement ratio, easily

I’m sure he’s heard of them, most of us have, but clearly he’s talking about automobiles on an automobile show.
