I just bought an AP1 from a dealership in SoCal. One owner, 30K. Don't ask me how much I paid(too much), but I have no regrets. Proud to be in the S2000 owner club.
Great review! I just replaced my '16 GT350 with a low mileage '05 S2000. I can never replace the sound of a GT350 but the S2000 is much more fun and engaging to drive. Also a much more affordable and reliable vehicle to operate.
Glad to see you in an S2000! For the record, there are lots of S2000's with 100k+ or 200k+ miles running strong. So I wouldn't be put off by mileage, it ultimately comes down to how it was taken care of.
I’d never trade my s2000 over a mustang sorry but s2000 is just timesless and brakes necks even thoe is 20 years old looks like a racing car, just having the top down with a loud J’s racing exhaust is just waaaaaaay to fun hahahah keep ur torque I’ll keep my high reving rocket
I owned an 03’ S2K identical to this one, great canyon car and superb transmission and of course reliable AF. Sold it due to lack of space but what a great car. After driving my friends “R” I was bit by the voodoo bug.
ap1's are amazing, had one a couple years now with a 255 square setup and modded Ohlins.. Totally changed the car, see if you can get a hold of one to test.
I've had my AP1 since 2010. Steering is amongst the best I've felt in many cars. So direct. Love it but it's time for something more practical. Going to be hard to let it go tbh BTW I'm in Australia, nice review Eddie
It's a fact that Gordan Murray, legendary car designer, was inspired to create the McLaren F1 car because of the Honda S2000, and that's amazing. Shows the influence and iconic status that the S2000 still has to this day.
"The brakes are so small"... My Prelude has 260mm and my S has 300mm discs. It seems a big improvement to me. It's all about the power and weight of the car. I have the road where i am playing and i accelerate to 115mph and then stop for the junction. I did that so many times and brakes are holding good.
I test drove 3 Mustang convertibles and 5 S2000 and kept coming back to the S2K everytime. I opted for an AP2 over an AP1 although I liked them both equally. I think S2000 will keep appreciating in time as they are getting rare whereas the market is overrun with 2015+ model year Mustangs which will continue to depreciate for several years to come.
Honda blew it out of the water with the S2000. I miss cars like this from them. This is by far one of Honda's best vehicles ever. Honda, you guys getting rid of this vehicle was a bad idea. I mean of course, the S2000 wasn't perfect. Very stiff car, transmission problems from the beginning from overheating and abuse, but this showed what Honda was capable of doing back in the 2000s, and how they can make a car that was so special. The fact that they made something like the S2000 shows the engineering prowess of the team that worked on it and the people who wanted to make a car like this. Nowadays, you don't see that anymore.
Honda engines are so rewarding to rev out~~ I miss the days when Honda can give us a VTEC engine like this one. Just hearing that second camshaft at 5000 RPM is heaven. People need to remember that Honda engines do not have a lot of torque for a reason, it's so that they reward the driver with an amazing experience with their motors.
I’m from Chicago and have a modified AP2. They definitely make power lower than in the RPM range compared to AP1. Im looking to move up to a GT350R though.
I liked the reviewed but you only drove it mainly on straight roads which is not what the s2k was made for. Review it on twisty turns or canyon road runs to truly appreciate the engineering.🙂
@@Nickoboss29 you really don’t know how to read . I said I drove that pile of poop 💩 and I hated it . I love my dads 1987 Supra turbo but not a fan of that other thing
honestly this car looks like it was built for little people or something lol. Japanese cars are just too small. I am 6'3" and cannot even fit in that lol. I'll stick to American sports cars.
@@z32luvr LOL na. I've had mustangs and camaros with no problems at all. Its 2020 not 1975. Plus American cars are way cheaper to repair than European.
My thoughts: HP to wheels is more like 210ish whp. Not a whole lot so there is a lot to be desired in terms of power. The torque in city driving is useless for spirited driving. Not a lot of people are comfortable hitting 90% of the engine potential on curvy roads. You really have to ring it out. Even the F22 felt torqueless. The F20 motor in this ap1 is great for revs but the K series motors are actually more impressive. The variable valve timing in the ivtec motors just produce more linear torque. Having owned an ap1 and ap2, i prefer the ap1 for the 9k redline. The worse thing was the hyundai diff which was like glass, no clutch drops in this car or you will break it.
@@beexiong2995 idk if its just a cultural thing or what, but where I'm from 240hp is a lot of power, like genuinely a lot, especially in a small car like that. Most people will go there whole lives without ever owning a car with 200+ horsepower here

I have an 18 mustang GT and an s2000 and both are tons of fun. Can’t deny torque is a blast.
one of my favorite cars
I really enjoyed it!
SSM AP1 is classic. Awesome example of an S2000.
The inspiration for the gauge cluster came from Senna's MP4/8, iirc. Excellent review as always.
Love seeing my car still being reviewed to this day! Amazing
Happy to see older, slower cars getting some attention. I maybe bias as an ap2 owner but 240hp on these Ontario roads is all I need
I just traded in my 2017 BRZ for a 30K mile AP1. Damn this thing awesome. This is totally a modern classic
Do you regret it? I'm thinking of getting a '17 86/brz or AP1 s2000 as my only car. What do you think?

Nice to see a review with the top down, the way it was designed.
It was chilly but fun!!
Can u lower the drivers seat a bit ..?

Also worth noting, F20/22 motors can make crazy power with boost. People daily supercharged S2000s making 4-500whp and they're fairly reliable.

240 hp is a lot for it's hey day and it doesn't feel slow. Only the likes of a miata would fit that title.
Totally agreed. Many people in America are spoilt with hp and ironically, they don't know how to drive a slow car fast.
The VW mk8 just now comes with 240 hp stock from factory...

$1200-$2500+ for top and labor. Depending on OEM or aftermarket. I’m about to replace the original top on my 00 ap1 so I’ve recently checked prices.
