I have had a couple of these during my life. My sweet hubby had more done. I am now 68 years old and my husband passed at 75 years of age. I will not have any more of these procedures done-- a decision made by me since there is no history of this issue in my family. Blessings!

@@Sabretooth-gz7pp I myself will not endure any more. I am too old now to have to be put under for any colonoscopies any more. Just my thoughts only for me. Every else must decide for themselves since I lost Jerry in 2018. Gloria Opperman

I had three done over the last 15 years. The most current one three days ago. The prep was pretty bad. The worst was having to drink 2 ltrs of Colyte the evening before and 2 ltrs in the early morning of the procedure. It tasted awful but having it cooled, drinking through a straw and sucking on lemon really helped. The procedure was very quick. Almost no sedation. I was fully aware of everything and saw my colon on the monitor. It did not hurt at all during the procedure nor after. He removed one polyp and recommended another colonoscopy in 5 years.

There is also a risk of septicaemia, possibly with bacteria which are resistant to antibiotics.

My wife had a colonoscopy in Jan. 2017 in Springfield, IL by one of the better colon people. She had 3 polyps removed, 45 minutes after leaving the hospital the pain started and has not stopped. her pain level is usually 2 to 5 24 hours a day 365 days continouis since 2017. 5 being the highest. She has been to several hospitals and doctors from Springfield, IL to St. Louis, Mo. Barnes Jewish was the last, great people, caring people, but they couldn't find the reason for the pain. Lots of pills that don't help the pain, if she rides in a car it makes the pain worse, even if she is lying down. Physical therapy also at 2 major hospitals and more pills that even make her sicker. She had been to several major hospitals now and no help. I know colonoscopy's are good, but Jan. 2017 was not a good day. Good Luck May God Bless

@@Sabretooth-gz7pp it just depends on your risk tolerance. also if you have risk factors. you have a 96% chance of not having colon cancer. only 5 to 10% of adenomas progress to cancer. know both sides. ask for a yearly fecal blood testing. a new study says that is just as effective

Always insist that an Anesthesiologist is conducting the anesthesia.Do not settle for a nurse or the physician doing the colonoscopy. They do not have the qualification or the experience to conduct a safe Anesthesia.

I think the risks are higher than he is suggesting. Several commenters, far more than 1 in a 1,000 have had very negative, some chronic pain side effects after doing it. Yes, they can save lives but it is also a real risk. I don't think I will risk it despite my doctors wishes. Don't need to deal with chronic pain after. No way. In fairness, it is also true that most who had a good experience will never post- those with negative will post a lot...like most reviews online.
