Sometimes, over-oiling is not simply ignorance, but an attempt to flush crud out of the workings without doing a full cleaning. Not necessarily laziness, but a quick fix to get a stuck movement running again to prove the rest of the clock. 12:00 Tip: Virtually all cleaners are pretty flammable. Keep your work environment free of flames, unshielded electrical connections (eg, an open motor coil), etc.
Good day JD, I too am the proud owner of a very expensive / resilient Swiss plastic stick. I am curious aboot (Canadian for about) how much material you took off the balance cock holder "tower" and did you also have to take material off the threaded stem it rides on?
To be honest, I can’t recall, but it wasn’t much maybe an eighth of an inch. Just buy one from aliexpress.com and measure where that holder needs to be if you’re talking about the gold looking holder that I have, I did put the piece of faux leather on the top as well and I did increase the size is a hole in the top so it would fit most roller tables, and therefore most balances.
JD, I just found your channel a few months ago and I love watching your videos. Short unimportant question: you mention that you use lighter fluid to dissolve the gummed-up goo. I believe the fluid used in wick-style lighters is mostly naptha. Have you ever tried Coleman camping fuel? I used to use it to clean up headstocks from old watchmaker's lathes, and it works well. I don't honestly know, but it might be another naptha-based compound.
Yes, I have used naphtha before in fact to clean clocks. I find lighter fluid more accessible and easier to distribute small amounts. Thanks for watching my channel by the way I did put some more stuff on this morning. I apologize for the flight simulator stuff :-)
ive got carriage clock but its running 5 mins fast a day and the leaver on the escapement on the is on the slowest setting what would be the issue with the clock in your opinioin? thanks
@@DjD1MAH my thought is that the amplitude is too low, and that short stroke of the balance would cause it to run fast. You need to try to get better amplitude, which may require you to change the mainspring. Or perhaps there’s other problems, causing the amplitude to be too low.

Thanks for the advice. You’re likely absolutely correct on the oiling. And I always worry about flammable stuff in my work area.
Hi JD. I finally got a Myers’s number 58 movement holder works great thanks for the tip
Great stuff. It is absolutely the best for most watches

I have one and they seem to be just a little too tall so thanks for the info. and have a great day - aye. : )
The tapered slot at the back is for gently levering off the balance cock.

@@JDRichardok thank you. i wont bother opening it up ill make it worse😂good to know whats wrong with it
No problem. You can find a watchmaker to replace the mainspring.
Wow a year ago !!!!!!
lloks like someone changed the one screw that holds the jewel in place, so jewel is cocked..
Is that a watchmakers joke:)
@@JDRichard just an observation, you done good
