    Just a small request, though: would you mind putting your book recomendations and such in the video description or as a fixed comment in written form? As a non-native english speaker, your english is perfectly comprehensible to me, but sometimes I have a hard time understanding the books' authors' names c:
    Also thanks for keeping the three arrows! They are visually very appealing in the response videos' thumbnails - almost a hundred years old but still very simple and effective in conveying the intended message! c:

    Concentration camps are real places with a real history. One can visit a concentration camp and see that it was a place of real and unimaginable suffering and despair, a harsh reminder of what fascism lead to and what it can lead to again. And there is hardly any context required to come to that conclusion, because concentration camps are inherently horrible places. They were designed to be murder factories and there's no way anyone could hide that fact.
    Statues (of any kind) are not true witnesses of time, they are man-made monuments, created to glorify and show only what the creator wants to show, not to depict truth.

      Ever visited the first use of concentration camps? The ones created by the English against the Boers? Concentration camps are just an extreme tool designed to get quick results subjugating a populace by fear to engineer the desired result for the ones benefiting from this perversion upon humanity. This left/right, commie/fascist labeling is just designed to keep you arguing and not see to the obvious right in front of you. Which is happening to you. You don't think so? How many people in your country are threatened by rules on a fancy piece of paper backed by force which will just throw more people into cages if they don't comply to those words on that fancy paper? Almost every single person in that country is, but some say1% isn't. But you are so distracted this isn't even a consideration. This is why 3arrows is dangerous. Dangerous cause it just feeds this myopia.

      That's especially important for adressing the faulty arguments against violence against Nazis, that are commonplace in America, where the punching of Richard Spencer gets more condemnation than his genocidal views in the enlightened sceptic community. And in Germany we'd simply send these thugs to a prison for their attempts to mass murder. I also think it works from a pragmatic point of view.

    • @dieselface1
      @dieselface1 5 лет назад +2

      I've already made my point in a long wall of text in another comment, so I'll refrain from too long of a response here, but to sum up my response to Oberst Kawaii, A. Saying you want Jews or other people groups to die isn't attempting to kill Jews. And before you talk about threats of violence, yes, if someone were to say that they were going to kill Jews they should be arrested for that because that is a *direct threat of violence.* However using the excuse that because someone believes in the Nazi ideology as a pretext to take action, is declaring someone guilty of a crime they have not committed and technically haven't stated that they're going to commit, which goes against the major *left wing* judicial practice of innocent until proven guilty of the crime they are being prosecuted for, which in this case would be genocide. B. Even if you believe in locking someone up for speech, I hardly see how that excuses violence. Violence is an appropriate response to violence, but not to speech. If Richard Spencer and his goons were to go out and start attempting genocide, then you could go use all the violence you want to counteract that, hell, I'd join you.

    Yes, PLEASE do a video on Germany's fortified democracy. The disingenuous (or, sometimes, naive) use of "free speech absolutism" as a shield for bigotry and disinformation is a phenomenon that desperately needs counterarguments. Very good advice on history. I have a master's in it and any field, and subject has a "consensus" based on the historiography but it's never completely definitive since new scholarship is done all the time and thus new scholarship that might bring either new evidence or more likely another perspective changes our understanding of the subject. Contrary to what most think, history isn't so static and good luck to the questioner too. Studying history can be difficult but rewarding :).

      Yes. One can be surprised but the skills that are learned in history is essential in many different fields: making an argument, backing it up with evidence, considering different perspectives, etc..all that. It's very important and why many companies want people with those kind of skills: to discern information and use critical thinking. Learning history can do that.

    • @Ninchennase
      @Ninchennase 5 лет назад +5

      I've got a degree in linguistics and have experienced the same. Many companies are quite eager these days to get other views than strictly business. Studying history, languages etc. means you're used to read a lot, to quickly digest huge amount of information, to develop new ideas out of that and to explain them to others. And also to question whether something's right or whether there are other, faster, better ways to do things.
      That's valuable for many companies. So I'm in online marketing spending a lot of time analyzing performance data, which has nothing to do with linguistics, but believe me: Staying up to date in this quickly changing business and explaining the changes to colleagues and customers is what I do really, really well. Oh, and I also write a lot of how-tos etc. Because seriously - learning how online marketing works isn't rocket science, it took me about 3 months for the basics and another 6 months to get the practice right. Since then it's just improvement. It doesn't require years of university, it's mostly statistics and a little bit of math and a lot of psychology.

Which Ithink is ok as everyone is allowed to make mistakes, especially if they are learning something every day.

      commented above but thought this book from the 1950s, from the Jewish stronghold of intellectual strength Brown University to be a very good example of why knowing History is a beneficial endeavor. this book will show you how history can change through the lens of time or be captured by vested interests ie very few of these facts documented in this book are even mentioned today sand if one does they seem to get vilified pretty quickly (probably happen to me just within this comment section). And simply by having a working knowledge of history allows you to determine which is which. archive.org/stream/ConjuringHitler/ConjuringHitler_djvu.txt

    You should definitely do a video on what you call "fortified democracy". In the USA it is very hard to object to any speech without being accused (generally falsely, but whole heartedly and honestly) of violating or wanting to violate the first amendment.
    A recent example is Alex Jones. I see no defense of his speech. But many people from all points in the political spectrum defend him without much thought.

    • @benevolentnick1
      @benevolentnick1 5 лет назад +3

      I dont pay much attention to alot of things alex jones says these days but huge respect and kudos for him uncovering the appalling, tragic and simply terrifying goings on at the Seattle g20 conference.Which forces me to consider the many things he does say. Think you would find that very interesting (what jones uncovered)and worthwhile if only cause as a direct consequence of those actions every subsequent g20conference has been a masterclass of miss direction- masking some outrageous behavior and legal frameworks. Happy to inform you on some of those if you would like? Maybe you should start looking at the message not the messenger. And rather than being objectionable, start thinking/evaluating solutions to an identifiable issue. if you cant do the first part simply there is no issue that you should be concerning yourself with-unless its for further knowledge. And if your asking this question above you are so far away from having an ordered mind, i would caution you, stay away from religious people, nigerian heirs and dangerous idiots like 3 arrows.

    • @dieselface1
      @dieselface1 5 лет назад +1

      A couple of points to make in defense of Alex Jones from a leftist. To start off, I don't know all the specifics of why he's been banned, though i know it involved the Sandy Hook shooting and claiming that the parents were paid actors. Since he's defaming those people, I actually agree that the video should be pulled down. Should he be banned though? Imagine Alex Jones was sued for this (and I'm pretty sure he was) and the prosecution won, as they should, but the decision wasn't just that Jones should be punished for what he said, but should also be banned from speaking or in any way communicating in public. That's essentially what happened to him, just on social media. Furthermore, after Jones' banning from multiple social media sites, there's been a massive increase in the suspension, pulling down, and banning of political content and politically involved users and pages, both left and right. Turns out when you give silicon valley oligarchs an inch on whether they can restrict what you say online, they take a mile. This is also why I'm not in favor of the government criminalizing any speech other than defamation/slander (and only in cases where the victim is tangibly negatively affected), and *direct* threats of violence. I don't exactly trust the government to tell people what is and isn't acceptable speech, *especially* the US government.

    In regards to the question from the recent left-leaning individual in a conservative household:
    I definitely agree with your response, not only does genuinely listening to the views they put forward help to create a dialogue of respect, it also allows you to better assess and address their points as time goes on. If they're out and out not interested in discussion though, it'll be rough either way.
    I'd also say to remember that the political dimension of a person is only one dimension of a person, even if it may impact others. Even if it's not possible to agree on issues of principles or politics, there are other places still to find common ground if you so desire--which by the question, it sounds like they do. For me at least, this has also been true outside of my family, as I've grown up in a relatively conservative community, and have had a good share of conservative friends, while I myself am left (and look the lefter still in my home country of the US...) If we engaged purely on topics of politics there would have been little to keep us in touch, but we shared various other interests and activities, and over the course of some years of discourse better came to understand one another's positions, even if there was rarely much in the way of concessions more than the minor (with only one notable exception I can recall.)
    As you said, it's hard to say anything without knowing more about their specific situation, but I guess the question made me reflect on my own experiences.

Before I subbed I wanted to check out your channel more and this seemed like the most logical choice to get a feel for it. I was very surprised on how many political stances you and I disagree on. I’m not really a fan of political labels but I suspect you would think of me as “right” or “ant-sjw”. Though in today’s climate I could understand you feeling that way, I believe you would be wrong. The closest I would label myself would be libertarian, but I don’t really fit there either. Anyway the reason I explained that is to give more context to why I subbing and looking forward to more content. You are confident in your beliefs, able to articulate them and distinguish between facts and opinions. Plus, like me you are a fan of history, particularly the world wars, I am always up for learning something new. It is such a touchy topic in current political times and propaganda is everywhere. Kropotkin's _The Conquest of Bread_ isn't actually a good book to read as an intro to anarchism. It's written for people who already have a general understanding of socialism and anarchism.
    A much better intro is Peter Gelderloos's _Anarchy Works_ .

      Thanks. I'm about half-way through _Conquest_ and feeling like it's big-picture stuff, meanwhile I'm wondering how anarchy happens on a more granular level. I'll check out _Anarchy Works._

      For getting into Kropotkin himself, a good intro is his longer pamphlets, which are usually collected in a single book. Those being

      • _The State: Its Historic Role_
      • _The Modern State_

      lol think you should read alot more, and get some context/ subtext into that brain of yours. its capable i bet. ie start with subtext- fascism is just another method by which a few hold 'ownership' through the establishment of oligarchies. Context is where along the chain of 'establishing' do the actions of antifa & fascists appear similar.Mentioning that rather than your "meh' comment will make you look/feel better in the long run and we might all in that process benefit as well.

    I LOVE GLITCH MOB DUDE! I think their two latest albums haven't been that great, the latest one was def better than the one before it, but Drink The Sea is a goddamn masterpiece and I rambled about the album to myself last night lol. Their EP's are all very good though, most EP's are better than their two latest albums. I love Palace of the Innocents or the Clouds Breathes For You. This band have been with me for years and serves as a huge inspiration in the things I do.
    Also, while I'm already just excitedly commenting here, I just wanna say, you have a lovely voice.

      That's because it literally does contradict the ideals of a free society and dabbles into authoritarianism. Sadly I could not find the person who commented and asked for your opinion on studying histoy. Therefore I like to give a "professional" (really big air quotes since I am just starting writing my PhD) opinion on it. The most valuable thing to have if you want to study history and even consider going into that direction professionally (PhD for teaching/research at university and/or working in adjected fields) is the ability to read a lot and read in many different languages. For example already for modern history if you are not a German or French nativ speaker many fields can be quiet difficult to handle (source-wise and literature-wise). If you already have a field of interest you want to study, like lets say communism, it might be necessary to even study something that is often refered to as an "area-study" in combination with history (like Sinology for Communist China or Slavistic for the Sowjet Union).
    The point I want to make is: Studying history to not only be a teacher but an actual researcher requires one to learn some kind of special language ability to stand out and then apply this ability to reading lots of stuff. Daniels suggestion ties into that too: It is firstly necessary to read several different publications (also in differently languages, since there are some big differences between the national discourses on most topics) to understand the academic discourse(s) and then judge the first hand accounts (which is stricly speaking only considered a source in history) with your own philological and theoretical tools. Therefore I would always suggest fellow students to pick up some special field of interest and maybe even couple it with a second degree in the appropriate language. (You can still learn languages late - its just more costly).

    A question:- what might substitute for price signals in a planned economy? Another one:- if this question is not the right question to ask vis a vis the problems of Venezuela and Zimbabwe; what IS the right question? Is the right question "how can Venezuela rid itself of all the bad people who obstruct the first ever successful planned economy"? Are questions about price controls and capital flight and inflation questions that only wicked people ask? If a socialist asked these questions ( in hope of an answer) would that turn them into a hateful wicked bad person? How do economies work? How can wealth be created and how can it be shared? Are these questions only evil people ask?

But you think shaun is value...haha Satal your closed mind makes you a puppet in a echo chamber which you think is of value to other people. ie whats Shauns Foundation based from? I cant work it out, but J Corbetts is based on the one historian who has had the most access to documents that no other even comes close to. Never been proven wrong or proven to have made a false statement either. Many tried as well.

    And what's your actual criticism of communism/socialism, if you aren't in favour of it? I'm just curious about that because I am. In this video It seams like you're thinking that communism opposes democracy, what I would strongly disagree with.
