The thing that really turns me off of fanservice is the recurring theme of “against their will”. SOOOO much fanservice in anime is women being exposed, groped, viewed, or straight up assaulted against their will, and it’s always played for lighthearted fun. Even shows where fanservice fun is the entire point focus mainly on girls being unwillingly sexualized, with male consequences (if any) portrayed as a simple punchline.
Female characters who are proactively sexual seem to be rare (not nonexistent, but heavily outnumbered by sexy girls who don’t want to be sexualized).

That's due to the general air in Japan for several years now. Women got to a point where they were allowed to be something other than a housewife. So the desire for men decreased, they were less necessary. Then being sexually repressed (is that the word?), the men just get more and more into depravity. Which coincidentally pushes women away more. All this made worse by far too many expectations as far as school and poor working conditions, and you've got a looot of guys unwilling to grow up. Small wonder Japan has one of, if not the worst sex and birth rates. Like even when BDSM can become common fashion, with a big kink culture, pps are very dry.
Anyway yea, that's why the force and discomfort exists. A woman actually being interested or consenting is "unrealistic" to many Japanese viewers.

YES! This is the main reason why I don't like most fanservice! I feel like a lot of people think people have a problem with fanserbicebecause they have a problem with sexy things in general, when in reality, a lot of fanservice is just flat out sexual harassment or a camera ogling the cast without them doing anything sexual themselves. It comes off as really creepy, especially if you have been sexually harassed yourself (I haven't, but other people have). I have seen some anime where the female character is openly flirtatious/sexualizing herself rather than being sexualized, as well as the pervy camera shots showing that the MC is attracted to his love interest, both of which I have no issue with

One of my favorite obscure facts about Evangelion, is that plug suits weren't originally going to be those skintight latex suits. But Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, the character designer, wanted to see the cosplays of girls in the tight suits. He mentions it in his art book, Der Mond. It just further shows how horny that team was.

  • @DOOMsword7

Good video! I AM a bit disappointed that you don’t get into the probably the biggest reason people hate fan service: consent and intent. Literally nobody complains about Julia or Faye from Cowboy Bebop dressing sexy. They presumably chose their own outfits and are grown ass ladies expressing their own sexuality. Even Dress Up Darling is about a girl choosing to dress sexy.
But 90% of anime fan service is done in spite of the characters wishes in ways that often parallel uncomfortable ways girls/women are sexualized against their wishes in real life. It’s not fun for female watchers or even just like me who wishes to see boobs without feeling like I’m party to SA. Ugh.

I wouldn't say that's the _biggest_ reason, in the sense of it being the main reason for the majority of folks who dislike it. Not even by a long shot. Now, I'll concede that it's _the most important_ reason for a certain demographic that needs to constantly virtue signal lest they get thrown under the bus by the company they've chosen to keep. But for the rest of us normies, it's really about the incessant immaturity of the whole thing. A constant barrage of ridiculous, unrealistic, contrived situations leading to sexually awkward moments may have appeal to the younger crowd, but it's humour on the same level as poop and fart jokes. Which I'd hope anyone has outgrown by the time they're out of high school.

I actually kinda like that aspect because it’s deconstructing the fan service trope to show that the average school girl would actually be really embarrassed by wearing an outfit like that. It's because people express their satisfaction differently due to nature.
Women typically have visually softer bodies, of course grow in such a way due to potential motherhood, leading to maternal instincts and how babies react to their mothers bodies, which naturally follows us (and gets exaggerated) into adulthood.
Men's bodies on the other hand are built differently from women, since the natural stereotype is that we're typically the iron walls since we're stronger.
Now imagine that kind of jiggling around on a man. That wouldn't be taken in a way that can be read as maternal baby fat that a woman has and by extension perfectly fit for parenthood. That would be taken as a man being lazy or unfit.

Shows like Free!, Diabolik Lovers, Black Butler, Dramatical Murders, Fushigi Yuugi, Yona of the Dawn, and Hakuouki are more honest examples, and they've been cropping up more and more. A point I was hoping to see explored more was Fanservice as Sexual Assault. You come close to it through other points but I feel it's a big part of the discussion and issues surrounding the topic.
F as SA usually comes up in darker "I'm 14 and this is deep" shows like Gantz and Mirai Nikki, but also is most of the fanservice in Berserk which is a fascinating example because it's an actually deep metanarrative comprised entirely of shallow elements. Even when F as SA serves the obvious purpose of villainizing a villain, it's often indulged to the point of gratuity and might as well have been any other crime for all the narrative weight and lasting impact it usually has. Where Berserk is able to distinguish itself is with narrative weight and acknowledging that only twisted and perverted people become monsters to begin with, which is enough to mostly validate the subtrope despite also making almost every apostle and monster a sexual organ with a face.

They can still watch it and have it be an escape. But when I watch an anime to “try and escape”, I’m just reminded yet again about how messed up things can be just because you’re born with a different organ. I like anime but this is actually what really puts me off of it. I want to use it as an escape too but when all you see is just more of what you hate in the real world, there is none. Of course CM doesn't show naked skin - except reze's pool scene - but it is kinda explicit in terms of teasing and intimacy... and I think some people would call this fanservice. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that it is all connected to the plot. Denji's 1st motivation was to touch boobs. Why? Because he is a teenage boy. This is the premise we start with, the motive that keeps Denji going. And later Power, a demon without the same perception of feelings and sexuality as humans have it, uses this to teas Denji. Makima on the other hand uses it to manipulate Denji. Reze's nudity is part of Denji's development as a character and as a teenager and also part of her character. And let's not forget eyepatch girl that also uses it to motivate Denji and as a comedic element.

@@grey_m0nkey218 I take issue with your use of the word "kinda." CSM is VERY explicit about the sexual tension between characters. Whether or not someone counts this as "fanservice" depends on their own definition of the term. It may not be nudity, but I agree that the teasing scenes do give the audience a boner.
I'm going to talk a bit on how the teasing and secual tension helps the story. The story centers around Denji, a somewhat good natured and derpy teenager, being thrust into a very dark and grueling adult world. Many of those adults take advantage of him as a teenager, utilizing Denji's horny and impressionable nature to try and manipulate him for their own ends. This leads to the large amount of sexual tension as Denji slowly explores his own sexuality, desires, motivations, and many other factors as he grows up. This is literally a coming of age story being told in the most gritty manner possible, and a teenager learning to accept and deal with their horny nature is a necessary part of any of these stories. This is especially true for Denji, who, up to the beginning of the story, has had very little to observe in terms of people on which to model his own take on relationships. Now he is suddenly getting many different role models, love interests, and what not shoved into his face, and we get to witness his struggles with such things.
And this isn't even talking about the other half of the story about the nature of devils, fear, and the supernatural elements of the world of CSM. What a fantastic story.

While i agree that kill la kill nudity is definitely better than... temaki nudity, I dont enjoy the entire ""comedy"" of haha groping and hihi girl is now ashamed because she is undressed against her will - feels too much like the guys straight up assaulting people and denying the whole thing by just saying that the people in question are just too modest.
I enjoy the nudity and fanservice that makes sense between the two (or more) characters to show each other like this. Give me the tiddy jiggles when i know both ends of the relationship are consenting to that or get the fuck out.

The tonal dissonance comes from the fact that the creators don't expect horniness to distract from the herioic fantasy of the story; they expect that it's supposed to enhance it, which is mostly only possible if you see the character more as a sex object and a trophy to be won, rather than a person who has just suffered trauma and is emotionally distraught. The problem is that you have more empathy for her than the creators expected, but that's not your mistake. 😕

Could it not just... enhance the heroic fantasy? I'm asexual, so I don't understand exactly how all this works, but wouldn't part of the allosexual heroic fantasy include having a super hot sidekick as opposed to one that... isn't hot? I don't see how the sexy-ification of characters requires trophyism (though I do see how it could be a frequent problem).

i think the cyberpunk anime really emphasises the point you made at the end. it has nudity and sex, not being afraid to show the female character's tits, or the male character's bare asses, but it does so in a way that doesn't feel pandering. it just makes the show seem like it was made for adults, and made to be analysed with an adult's level of intellectualism.

As a woman who's watched hundreds of series, I went through a phase where I didn't mind fanservice at all because I was so desencitized to it, to it being incredibly annoying, to now trying to look at it in a more balanced way.
The two things that break fanservice for me is consent and tone. Fan service for comedy or in romance shows is perfect. Not when it interrupts really impactful moments. But consent is the biggest element to me now.
Consent is why I loved Dress Up Darling and why characters like Yoruichi from Bleach are amazing. Consent is why I thought Food Wars was genius when I first saw it. And consent is why I don't want to put up with ecchi shows that cheaply disrespect their characters.

It’s also that, I dunno, maybe people might be sensitive to things like rape and sexual assault being treated like a joke? Y’know…the way it often is in real life? Something something art imitates life, life imitates art? Just a thought.

I would feel so much comfortable if they were fine with it and enjoying themselves. Many times they’re shown as innocent beings who’re not realising they’re turning the guys on by accidentally flashing them their underwears etc. Honestly, I just want the women who’re doing fan service to do it because they want to and feel like it, and I want their characters to have their own arch’s and be well developed and not there just for fan service. Not really. This is one of those situations where discussing something from within the fandom does a disservice to the complexities. In Japan, the concept of "service" predates anime and is everywhere throughout the culture. For example, before Cutie Honey we have idols, who are packaged and presented in a very similar way as anime. Especially in the 1970s, it was common for most female stars to present "fan service" in the form of nude or gravure photography. In the 1960s the film genre called "Pink film" started, where almost every woman had nude scenes, even if they were a major actor/protagonist. Within the world of adult entertainment, prostitution, etc, it's always been common practice to refer to these things as "service". The word is wildly used this way in Japan. "Fan service", is a slang that developed somewhat alongside anime, but denotes services which are done complimentary, or for free for the fans. And in Japanese we use this word all the time to refer to risky/suggestive things. Even 30 years ago it's normal ask a girl to give you "service" as a euphemism for perverted stuff. Explaining "fan service" in this way hyper focuses this to anime industry, when this is a wider, older and much more engrained cultural phenomenon in Japan. This is not anime, this is Japanese culture.

I think looking at it from the anime prospective can also be very helpful. Anime is the main by which man foreigner are introduced to certain cultural aspects of Japan, including the bad sides. Honestly I think the biggest issue you run into with fanservice is how insidious and unexpected it can be. You've got some shows that are right out there with the fact that this is what you're getting, but then there are others marketing themselves as Serious Anime, or even Art Pieces, and you get two episodes in and it's actually another box of Whoops, All Titties.
This leads a lot of people in that "I like fanservice when it's in its place/unintrusive" to just...not be able to trust anime at large.
The other bit is when it's lazy. There are a lot of showrunners who clearly don't think much of their audience, because they're sure we'll be content with "plot" instead of plot, when unfortunately for them the truth is most of us are well aware of great shows that have both. The idea that a non-porn show doesn't have to be engaging if it's sexy enough is just...incorrect. But it seems like writers fall for this idea all the time.

    • @Gamebreakerprods
      @Gamebreakerprods 10 месяцев назад +1

I feel like I'm misunderstanding...a lot of your arguments here. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by saying that it's "insidious". My assumption is that you mean it's harmful to women, and to that I'll reiterate my response to another comment here; the only minds that would be impressionable enough to see anime fan service and think it's okay or normal for things like that to happen would be those of children, and these shows are not targeting them, they're aimed at a demographic that is well old enough to understand that the real world obviously does not operate like an anime. If anyone *does* think it's okay to go around fondling anyone, the seed of that idea was planted before they ever watched an anime, and/or by a lot worse than some gremlin accidentally falling into an anime girl's chest. The notion that any of it is somehow capable of changing ones views on anyone, in either direction is, to be frank, preposterous to me.
And yes, it is unexpeced. That's...what fan service, sexual or otherwise, is supposed to be. I do understand your point about shows that are designed to be more serious, though. But I have to be real with you, I've been watching anime since 2013 and watched over 200 series and movies, and a show that advertises itself as serious devolving into "whoops, all titties", as you put it, is strikingly rare; definitely not common enough for someone to have a so strong a reaction as no longer being able to trust anime as a whole. Might there be fan service in these shows? Sure. But it's typically in just a few episodes of the season and is usually something like a topless scene that randomly occurs, and almost always where it's appropriate (shower/changing room/locker rooms) or expected for someone to be topless. The types of fan service you see in ecchi shows rarely (but, yes, occasionally does) venture beyond that genre. If you're sensitive enough to fan service that seeing a few instances of it throughout an entire series will cause you to distrust anime completely, then I feel safe in saying perhaps anime just isn't for you, because you will inevitably come across it more frequently than you are comfortable with.
*That said*; I do feel streaming services need to start understanding the medium more and realize that slapping a "sexual content" descriptor on a show in their catalogue isn't enough here. Yes, fan service is a form of sexual content, but I think any fan, regardless of their opinion of it, can agree that it's not a typical form of it. There needs to be a "fan service" or "risque fan service" descriptor. I genuinely think that little extra bit of clarification would go a long way towards ensuring people are watching the kinds of shows they personally want to watch.
As for your last paragraph. No. A show can absolutely exist solely for its fan service. You say the studios producing them "don't think much of their audience", but this honestly feels like you're willfully turning a blind eye to the painfully obvious reality here. You can't seriously believe that a studio making a show like, say, The Mother of the Goddess Dormitory is making it thinking it's going to appeal to a wide audience. They most definitely are thinking of their audience by creating these series, just not their broader audience. It is and always has been a niche audience, for sure (a simple look at the user ratings of these shows on MAL will attest to that), but I'm going to go ahead and say that I feel like they're thinking at least somewhat highly of them if they're willing to put in the significant time and resources into a show that caters to such a small fanbase. Why is deciding to make a show appeal to a small sector of your audience lazy?

Thanks for the vid. Communicating so clearly and coherently about this generally awkward topic helped me organize my own thoughts.
Over the last 5 years or so, my interest in watching anime and reading manga has gradually diminished. I would say that a large part of it due to fanservice disrupting the flow of the story or any particular scene with a more serious tone. It's also aggravating to have a show constantly cutting away from the actual focus of dialogue or action to instead shove fanservice in one's face (ie: the "camera" shifts from the face of the person talking, to say, centering on an almost vertical top-down shot of the cleavage of a female character being spoken to). I also take issue with when a serous fight is happening only for a female character's clothing to be torn to shreds for the audience to gawk at, breaking the entire pace of the conflict. Often with "bonus points" for an slow motion panning shot of them blushing in a revealing position. Similar issue as with the Fire Force character, what is the audience supposed to feel in this moment? Upset at the character's loss of the fight, or horny over their overly sexualized state?
I'd personally prefer that entertainment not include fanservice unless is specifically meant to be adult entertainment, though that may be a more extreme take. Although Food Wars and Kill La Kill aren't for me, having heard the explanations of the two anime I can see how they can find an audience to enjoy them in spite of or because of how they utilize their over-the-top fanservicing.
I hope that in the future, manga and anime studios refine the "If, When, How, and Why" of the inclusion of fanservice.

This dive isn't deep enough. The root/source of the term fanservice is simply "service", or サービス as a loanword. While it does retain its original meaning, it has also become slang for "a little something something" or something "on the house", i.e. extra service.
Go Nagai also had a manga older than Cutie Honey AFAIK called Harenchi Gakuen that was quite erotic.
Also when talking about this topic, it becomes muddied and hard to figure out which parts are genuinely intended to be erotic and which parts are "done as a service to please fans", so now the word has lost its meaning, at least in a lot of circles. Like, I wouldn't call porn, softcore or not, or any kind of work intented to be erotic as "fanservice". The easy way to tell is if a front page or afterword panel or an extra panel added to a tankoubon release is of the characters doing a beach episode. Now that would be fanservice. A, "what people outside Japan would describe as ecchi" series, would be something like Ichigo 100% or Nana to Kaoru? Those two aren't "fanservicey", they're just straight up lewd.
Finally, the "... how does that even happen" scene is a well known trope in Japan called lucky sukebe ラッキースケベ.

But sensitive topics like sexual assault need to be handled with care. "The" scene in Goblin Slayer was anything but that. The scene was uncomfortably prolonged more than it needed to get their message across with so much unnecessary detail. And the direction as well as the way the woman was animated in a way that feels more sexualized than horrifying. And I do went and go to read ahead in the manga and it isn't getting any better. Woman SA is an integral part of the plot and world-building it's almost like women exist just to be damsels in distress to be saved by the male characters while having the most horrific moment in their lives sexualized.

From what I've seen, sex and nudity in anime is never seen as intimate or a sign of trust.
Sex is depicted and silly, lewd, and depraved. It's treated both as a punchline and as a gesture.
Personally, I think sex and nudity in anime should be like the James bond films where they only happen if there is an actual scene of intimacy/intercourse, which never happens in anime.

They were originally kinda funny and fit one of the characters, but then the studios realized people liked them and they literally go back to all the movies to put quips in there after the movie is done shooting. They take away from the tension in so many scenes, but in movies like Thor: Ragnarok (dedicated comedies) they work so much better.
