Eric gives action to the truth, humans need to create. Human must express their thoughts and interaction with the world around them, the experiences and places we pass through. His medium is only slightly different from my son cutting bowls from slabs of trees, or the sculptor seeing a leaping animal in a block of granite.
Gifs do not require craft. Some of them are the product of craft. Animations produced manually are the products of craft. Learn a little more about this history of animation. Try it yourself and then decide if it’s the same as making gifs.

I got really really dizzy for a few hours after watching half of this Ted Talk. Something about the objects going round and round and round in a semi disconnected manner...
Ok he spent 15hs in front of a scene, how long did it take to cut out all those images? Why did he not remove the auto if its just a spring drum that he was going talk over anyways. But I am glad that his art is helping him, and he is proud of it.
I can see why it was forgotten and it was meant to be forgotten because we have far better methods. Why isn't he trying to revive witchcraftry or apothecary medicine or maybe alchemy?
To answer your question: Apothecary medicine does not need reviving, as we still have apothecaries, they just tend to go by the name "pharmacists " in most regions. However, in some places, pharmacists are still referred to as apothecaries. Witchcraftery has an "e" after the "t", and generally refers to the use of magic. While magic is thought of differently nowadays then in medieval times, there are still people who believe in magic. He's just not one of them, therefore he's not trying to revive it. Alchemy is technically the predecessor to chemistry, while it was based more upon turning base metals into gold or elixirs. This makes no sense, as it's like trying to turn helium to hydrogen, and we know that now. We can't turn one base to another. Therefore, we abandoned this after gaining the knowledge that the goals of alchemy was impossible. However, chemistry does still focus on transformations. Comparing this to Zoetropes and modern animation techniques, they focus on the same principles. Zoetropes weren't really forgotten, but were rather swapped out for better methods. However, they are unique in their own sense, as a physical way to view a typically digital form of art. It was also the second true animation device EVER, and when compared to Alchemy, or witchcraft, it is far superior. Please do your research before you comment in the future.
It's crap. Uninspired, puerile, pedestrian, uninteresting. To say that it pales in comparison with the real achievements of western art is an understatement-it doesn't even register on the scale.
fsmoura You are wasting other people‘s resources just by being alive. We all are. In case of this TED talk, no harm, no foul. So try being a bit nicer. No additional resources will be wasted, since you are already here anyway.
Art: noun 1. the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. I'm not sure of your definition of art, but I've included the official one so you can remove your lack of correct information.
Eric Dyer was my advisor at UMBC. He is definitely one of if not the best teacher i've ever had. Great man that Professor Dyer!
Out of the box !
Art never ends, creativity never ends!
The future here. You'll love this AI thing! ;D
holy moly the time and the dedication required is astounding...
Was more interesting than I first thought it would be.

CybranM just the opposite feeling
For crying out loud!!! I'm just having trouble making a basic zotrope and this guy is..... Wow!🙂 Thank you. I'm feeling a little dizzy.
Beautiful art using a classic form. A circle of art meets the circle of life.
One of the better TEDx talks. Inspirational and humane. Thank you.
This is amazing! Well done!
This is a great talk, I love how he put his own twist on the zoetrope c:
I like the way he starts "A long time ago, I was an animator" when he looks about 28. Long ago must be a relative term.
Time is relative.
What time is it?
I Mean He Could’ve Been One 10 Years Ago, 10 Years Ago Is A Pretty Long Time...
He was 47 when this was recorded
One word for you.....
Awesome 👍
You are very imaginative..... 👍
great to see Logic is experimenting with different mediums
Wow,he took something old and made it his own and new. Good talk.
As Individuals we are finite, but as family we are an On going Cycle. ❤
What an amazing use of one's brain!
Why do the people with the greatest vision have to have issues with their eyes? 😢 Great talk! Fascinating.
😊 Brilliant!!!

I wish we all could make a living out all the useless things we get to imagine. Very inspiring.
Earth is a zoetrope if it stopped spinning everything would completely stop
Wow. That really spoke to me. In many ways.
Cash in Cash out
Always loved the idea of the zoetrope. Impressive! something new and inspiring
A truly creative guy
Thanks. This video is.... moving.
For once you actually posted a talk about art that interest me
He didnt invent a new Zoetrope. 😆 That's the same thing as a zoetrope that uses a strobe light to reveal the animation.
Awesome thanks

Awesome 👍
Wish the background music and noise was reduced. Too distracting
So he makes gifs for a living?
No, he receives money taken by force from other people to make gifs.
fsmoura what?

he is an artist, and u r heartless. But i laugh 'cause i am an horrible person

"as individuals we are finite but as family, we are an ongoing cycle ... a kind of like the wheel of life"; thanks TEDdy of CharlottesvilleVirginia
lovely
UdK brought me here
Needs audio balancing. His voice is way too low compared to the clip audio...
I got really really dizzy for a few hours after watching half of this Ted Talk. Something about the objects going round and round and round in a semi disconnected manner...
👍
Seizure warning!
Can I find who translate this video to Arabic language ...Please
His voice and the videos sound are at the same level, it is very confusing to ear. It is a good talk do.
Why does "experimental" art seem to mean merely "disorienting"?
Ok he spent 15hs in front of a scene, how long did it take to cut out all those images? Why did he not remove the auto if its just a spring drum that he was going talk over anyways. But I am glad that his art is helping him, and he is proud of it.
Hipster in the age of VR and AR :))
I’m dizzy
His recollected observations on landscape weren't great. I like his compassion.
There was a good reason why it got forgotten
this guys gets paid for this? nice
Cyclists in Copenhagen need to slow down.
Excellent work! Go Eric!

Awesome idea, awful implementation
Hobby should stay as hobby. Nothing is good. Very typical Ted talks.
So dull. Dull talk, dull speaker. Waste of time.
It's crap. Uninspired, puerile, pedestrian, uninteresting. To say that it pales in comparison with the real achievements of western art is an understatement-it doesn't even register on the scale.
Really breaking out those hipster buzzwords tonight.
Jared Knight You pedestrian you
A dull mind would find this to be dull. No surprise here.
benejeneb ... hmmmm your wasted time! Nobody else owns that but YOU!
you made this beautiful type of art really boring

It's crap. All crap. Get a job and stop wasting other people's resources.

fsmoura, LOL my thinking exactly. These TED talks are far too often filled with useless noname speakers just trying to make a quick buck.
He actually teaches at UMBC, so that's a job for sure.
This isn't real art.
godhead align us with what you call art please
Thank you for deciding what art is
