    You *could* do it with slits, too, right? That would seem to eliminate 90% of the problems with motors and lights.

    The Ghibli museum in Japan has a fantastic one that is highly detailed and intricate. One of the "tricks" is actually to place the models farther apart, so the viewer doesn't get distracted with seeing so many of the same models moving around. You really only need the animation at around 10 to 15 fps to see the nice effects.

    You could put a tube inside of the ring of cubes so the viewer is only able to see the cubes in the front... then the animation will be a little more focused. Also, an animation without jumping (so the support on the cubes in mid-air is not needed) would add to the realism. FYI - Blue Man Group uses a strobe and a large spinning set of sculptures for an animation in their show.

    • @Satamanster
      @Satamanster Год назад +1

      Exactly my thought. I would even add to that. If you built some sort of cover to only display a single frame and use an arduino to sync the light so that it would only be on within the frames that the figure is more centered, the narrower the gate and the shorter the light gap the cleaner the animation would feel. I haven't test this though, it's only my feeling put together from distinct experiences.

    A slit would still help sell the illusion so you're not always seeing all of the other frames all the time. Add a column in the middle of the rotating platform to block the back portion as well.

  • @thedrawingquill2059
    @thedrawingquill2059 Год назад +1

    3:30 the camera freaking out isn’t because of the app, it’s actually not freaking out at all. The issue is any camera you get, unless specifically made and labeled otherwise, uses rolling shutter to take picture or record video. it doesn’t take an instant snap, but records each frame scrolling from top to bottom. usually not something you’re able to notice, but for things like flashing that changes in the middle of each frame being recorded, it mucks it up pretty bad.
    to avoid this, you have to get a camera with global shutter, they’re typically much bigger and more expensive

    Amazing job. I've seen other projects online as well. I was thinkimg, maybe you could achieve the perfects stroboscope at any speed, if you could create little connectors at the centre of each figure, so when it rotates light can hit always at the perfect timing at whatever speed. Best regards from Portugal

    Hello! It's a great work I'd like to ask you two questions.
    1.
    01:31
    When you test the animation with a blender, you can see that the floor is spinning. Why did you do that? Is it possible to test it like a real Joystrope in a blender? Or did you just give me an animation effect, not related to Joistrope, just to see a rough look?
    2.
    03:40
    You said you made a clean video using a little trick, what trick is it?
    I can't wait to hear from you. Thank you in advance Mattimotion!

    • @mattimotion
      @mattimotion  Год назад +1

      Hey there, thank you!
      1. The test in Blender was not really necessary, I just did that to get a rough look, like you said. And a bit of footage haha.
      2. There I didn't actually record a video, but took individual photos and rotated the zoetrope by hand between each shot. Then I made them into a video like a stop-motion animation. That way I didn't have to think about the stroboscope and frequencies.
      Thanks for watching!

    • @mattimotion
      @mattimotion  Год назад

      I used a SM-S4306R Servo for this. Unlike most servos, this one has a continuous rotation instead of a 180° range. You can use any motor you want, the important factor is that it rotates with a consistent speed, so you can find the right frequency for your stroboscope. I didn't calculate that for mine and just found out by trial & error

  • @Lilly_PK
    @Lilly_PK Год назад

    increasing shutter speed of your camera would fix the freaking out of the cameras. this would make the images darker though so what you could do is have it record a new video every time it rotate 360 degrees and then multiply the color values of each looped frame together to have a brighter image.
    you could also keep the dark video and just make it brighter(this method looses color and color depth.

    • @mattimotion
      @mattimotion  Год назад +1

      Thanks for the suggestions. I think if I make another one someday, I would implement a way to control the rotation speed, so it can be adjusted to any camera framerate. Might make recording easier

    You can make a hologram if you dont know
    Cut 4 glass into the side face of the regular quadrilateral pyramid and glue them together (cut a lil bit of the top so that it can stand upside down). Then get a big screen and search for some hologram video and play it then place the upside down to bottom top cutted regular quadrilateral pyramid made from glass and uhh idk place it somehow for it that it create a hologram when look from the side? Well sorry for bad grammar cuz im from vietnam
