This is currently on display at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles and it was one of the most mind blowing experiences of my life. it's a fucking MARVEL. This video does an amazing job of explaining what's happening but it doesn't scratch the surface of what the experience feels like. $25 might be a steep price for some to pay but with everything else the museum has (especially the Miyazki exhibit through June 2022) this makes it WELL worth the price.
I know, right? It seems so straightforward, at least the most common shots (the only thing I don't really understand with 2d animation is the depth effect, how do they know how fast the forground moves in comparison to the background?) but my mom struggles so much with the concept even though I have tried to explain it to her. I mean, she thought tangled was hand drawn animation! She wouldn't believe me that it would be practically impossible to have that level of detail in a full length
Amazing!!! I've seen it just today in Milan at the PAC (Padiglione Arte Contemporanea)... Everyone was awed when we entered in that dark room and looked at the Zoetrope... Really, I could have stayed there looking at it forever... so many wonderful details!!!! Thanks Pixar!
Remember when Walt Disney had his zoetrope and it had small light strips that you could see though? The strobe is to go on and off every 24th of a second, like that small strip. The strobe goes off for a small amount of time like the black card. We don't see the strobe go off and on because it is too fast for the human eye and, as we saw, it creates this illusion of motion. Let me know if that made sense.
I saw this exact piece (or something VERY similar) at the Pixar show at the MOMA several years ago. Very cool though I did also love the After Effects piece broadcast across 3 projectors slightly more.
@00SuzuKitamura00 When someone invented a certain archetype of animation, it's not copying when someone makes a unique piece of art that falls into that archetype.
....okay, pixar zoetrope and their use of strobe lights makes me MORE confused about animation....is the strobe light running and we can't see it? Or have the digitally removed the strobe light (in which case, what's the point?)
I remember seeing this at California Adventures and being absolutely enamored by it. I really wish they didn’t replace it with some lame Frozen meet and greet they could have put literally anywhere else.
The optical illusion responsible for animation (Stompfer-Faraday-Plateau effect) is well-known, but to see it applied to three-dimensional objects before your very eyes is interesting.
We saw it in EXPO Amsterdam. My daughter (5yo) spent like half an hour on it. I didnt stay much behind, there's so many details on it, every time it spins, u find something u missed last time :)))) Great stuff, nuff said.
I once watched a documentary about someone who could not register the after images in his eyes and could not see movement as his brain did not process the after images . It was really very sad and made me realise how incredible the brain is .
Interesting thoughts. The clay figures are moving from left to right, spinning backwards, last to first, Merlin living backwards in time. While the focused animation and strobe light appear to move in the other direction, right to left. Mabee says something about Deja's vu to.
Im still confused. I understand the one where it uses a strobe because this acts like the slits in the old zoetropes...but this doesn't use a strobe, so how the hell does it work?
PomBare This still uses a strobe light at a frequency that your eyes can't see, but your brain still registers the information properly allowing you to see the effect.
I've been there today! MAN it was SICK! mind BLOWN! those moves! WoW!!! there was thth HOLE part look closely when the 3 eyed alien jumps in a HOLE Soooo Awesome!
I can't even comprehend how someone could keep track of all of that movement...
I mean… it’s literally not at all hard 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I saw this on my last visit to Disneyland several years ago & I found it so fascinating, I spent at least half an hour watching it!
Saw this at the Oakland Art Museum. It's so amazing, everyone watching it stayed and watched it over and over. I one day hope to work at Pixar.
Did you end up getting to work there?
Well, did it happen?
Well, any updates?
Saw this in Valencia last week, and it was genuinely one of the most incredible and mind-blowing things I've ever seen.
This just adds to the legendary awesomeness that is Pixar.
I have seen the Studio Ghibli one, it blew my mind.
Where is/was it?
@@michaelwilliamybarra2409 japan
Same. Went to the museum in Tokyo and it blew me away.
Saw this at the Pixar exhibition at the London Science Museum some years ago....mind blowing to see it in action.
Me too.

My head hurt so fucking hard after seeing it. Scared the shit out of me when it worked
Cash in Cash out
Saw it a few weeks ago at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg, Germany (they got a Pixar exhibition til May 12th) and it's truly awesome.

I was on ecstasy when I saw it and it was like the most epic thing in the entire fucking universe.
These are awesome! The Ghibli zoetrope was amazing also! I saw it in person more than a decade ago.
I was NOT on ecstasy when I saw it and it was still like the most epic thing in the entire fucking universe.
@@j.mancinone6453 ya but it wasn't as epic compared to if you were on ecstasy
I love how this is like stop motion but without a camera
Well spotted!
Who's here from watching Mob Psycho 100 Season 2 opening?
Jp Icalla eyyy hi

Saw this zoetrope yesterday at the Pixar exhibition in Amsterdam & I was stunned by it. It made me watch it for like 20 minutes. Go see it!
my favorite part of the ghibli museum was the zoetrope 💖💖 stunning
Saw this at the PNE at Get Animated this year but they used different characters. Loved it.

Why isn't this in the Pixar section of Disney/Hollywood Studios?
I just saw these things 2 days ago for the first time it's really amazing

Let me know if that made sense.
Basically (analog or digital) there is no such thing to capture a video, a movement; but taking snapshots as much as possible to create an illusion
human are damn geniuses
This succeeds in making me wish Toy Story could've been made in stop motion.
I saw this, at the Disney Animation Building, at Disney's California Adventure!
I miss is does anyone now where it is now??
I saw this exact piece (or something VERY similar) at the Pixar show at the MOMA several years ago. Very cool though I did also love the After Effects piece broadcast across 3 projectors slightly more.
How do we look at it that it's moving? It's like a weird question
@00SuzuKitamura00 When someone invented a certain archetype of animation, it's not copying when someone makes a unique piece of art that falls into that archetype.
I want all those sculptures!!!
....okay, pixar zoetrope and their use of strobe lights makes me MORE confused about animation....is the strobe light running and we can't see it? Or have the digitally removed the strobe light (in which case, what's the point?)
Why are people arguing about disney and pixar? Can't we just admire the artistic beauty of this project?
I remember seeing this at California Adventures and being absolutely enamored by it. I really wish they didn’t replace it with some lame Frozen meet and greet they could have put literally anywhere else.
I saw this in person at California Adventure. It was amazing

Saw this zoetrope at the Pixar exposition in Rome, a few days ago.

@Proupin I've seen this in person and it's quite surreal! I've never seen a person not completely fixated on it and amazed by it when I've been there.
Fantastic
The Totoro thing is flabbergasting in person, I had the chance to see it in Tokyo at the Ghibli museum.
I used to always come see this thing (or a replica of it ig) every time I went to Hong Kong Disneyland... its not there anymore 😢
SOOOOOOO COOL
I saw this in person when I was a kid
this is incredible! but i'm still terrified of old zoetropes because of the woman in black :/
@djdogjuam I once had to teach children how to make a Zoetrope, you have no idea how many of the PARENTS seemed confused by the concept.
That's brilliant.
Pretty cool.
Where is it now ???
Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, LA.
Please bring this back to disneyland CA
Wouldn't it be fun if you do one of your own? :D
Ive seen the zoetrope in real life i think this was in CA but i forgot where
Holy crap that is cool!
THIS IS FUCKING AWESOME

That's AMAZING!
Very cool - just added a video of it on my channel.
1:26 “…the clearest explanation of animation…”
Hahaha
I've seen this at Disney California Adventure at Disneyland.
@mcallahan13 well duh, that is what it is, and they explain it as such in the video. What is there to it that could be classed as 'fake'?
Interesting thoughts. The clay figures are moving from left to right, spinning backwards, last to first, Merlin living backwards in time. While the focused animation and strobe light appear to move in the other direction, right to left. Mabee says something about Deja's vu to.
ghilbi awesomeness

Ekselente Vidéo amigo, le doy mis dies
They need to do a Finding Nemo and Incredibles zoetropes.

Mind exploded
The flip book is on threes? Why?
I saw this is Disneyland Hong Kong.
I got so shocked when i saw it in real life.

This is so cool i
You could easily make this at home too!
Very good morning Gnuida
@alfredthegnome agreed but for some reason some people think the comments section is there to start an argument.
Beautiful; but so was the 3-D zoetrope at MoMI in London, 30 years ago. A seagull in flight; simple, but simply stunning.

@alfredthegnome How about Ghibli?
It will get better hey matter.🥰
Wow!
PomBare it uses a strobe for people , but you can time the cameras frames to the zoetrope to do the same thing without the strobe.
@alfredthegnome welcome to the internet.
😍 prima!
@aussersein I saw it myself in an exhibition in Hong Kong. Not fake.
Secret to time travel
The Holy Grail.
I saw this IRL!!!
Why I hurt in abs. This was my thought typed yesterday's s,
Legal
i saw this while on ecstasy
Wait, there are people who don't understand how animation works? Do they think Toy Story was filmed with tiny people in suits?
I'm 5 years late but honestly fuck off and don't be a dick
saw it in Hamburg :)
Now do a movie with studios ghibli
I've been there today! MAN it was SICK! mind BLOWN! those moves! WoW!!! there was thth HOLE part look closely when the 3 eyed alien jumps in a HOLE Soooo Awesome!
