We bought a house in Maine couple years ago and inherited a raspberry patch about 3 beds, 20'x3' all same variety. We are doubling down and expanding the patch by 2-3x, adding blackberries and several more raspberry varieties. They are such a wonderful perennial, just a "got to" for temperate gardens.

Blackberries can punch through wood mulch just fine, even upwards of 7 inches thick. Mine have no problem and those that make it up are stupid thick.

I love blackberries! I hate picking them because of the THORNS! So, I just bought 6 Thornless Blackberry plants and plan the plant them soon. Wild blackberries grow e v e r y w h e r e here and are usually considered weeds but I love them. My little plants are only 6 in. tall but already have blooms and berries forming. I plan to plant them along my fence. I live in East TN and expect them to grow like crazy. Love your videos. They have helped me a lot. If you have any info specific to thornless blackberries I'd love to hear it.
I am a backyard farmer of sorts as well. It started with a few strawberry plants on my back deck 5 years ago. Then came the fruit trees. I have 2 Paw Paws, a FuYu Persimmon, a Peach, a Fig, a Pear and 2 Hazel Nut trees. They are still small but growing well. I want to have a few chickens for eggs eventually. I believe this is an addictive hobby :)

Thanks! This is very helpful. Our blackberries are thornless triple crown. We grow them on a 40 ft archway made of cattle panels. I tip the vines and roll them and tie them onto the welded panels. We have 5 grandchildren and two coming in the next month so having fruit at little people level is important. 🙂❤️. Grazing in the garden is really fun!

Interesting this, thank you. I have considered growing blackberries on my plot, but as they grow so prolifically as a weed all round where I live (and pretty much the whole of the UK!) I've never thought it was worth the space to cultivate some - even though I could have the choice of different varieties and can feed / prune etc them to ensure a great crop - which I cant on the ones that grow as a weed. Thank you for giving me lots of food for thought!

I like what you are saying about the hay, although in the south some hay growers use grazon to kill weeds. the grazon stays on the hay for 7 years. Working in a location that has complaints about plants and tomatoes, the one problem that stands out is a farmer used horse manure that the horse hate the hay from a field that had used grazon on it. the manure was contaminated with the grazon, it didn't hurt the horse. but once contaminated manure was used on the 50 tomato plants it rained on the plants causing the grazon to splash on the plants killing them. so the moral of this story, is to be sure where you buy manure or hay.

I've never grown thornless blacberries before but we planted a short row of arapaho blackberries this spring. Only had a handful of berries this year as to be expected. My question is should I prune them before winter or wait until year two to begin pruning? I thought arapaho was an erect variety but we had to zip tie them to our fence, a lot of the canes are 6-8 feet. Also, is it normal for the leaves to turn purple in November?

Really useful and clearly explained, Thanks for posing. I use a two wire trellis but find it difficult to keep orderly once the new shoots (next year's fruiting vines) get growing. Is it ok to shorten the new growth during the summer or does this cause them to branch? Also, where many new shoots are coming from the ground, should they be thinned by cutting at the base as soon as they appear or wait until they have grown before thinning?

I see leaf growth on the bottom part of my Thornless Blackberries. Do you pick these off up to about 2 feet to ensure larger berries and less entanglement?
