I have tried a willow tea made from soaking some willow cuttings from my local creek bottom as a rooting medium. It worked well. Willow tea has antibiotic properties. I have also tried honey with good results. I have also heard about using saliva or spit, cinnamon, and aspirin. There are directions online for using all of these methods

I did this sort of thing with my mom's roses - basically, I'd seen some of your previous videos, and then I saw the results of your one "Grape Propagation Results"video, and well, I decided to do a test involving some wild blackberries and raspberries, which did fairly well, until I tossed them out, as I don't necessarily want those at the moment - might try growing some of the blackberries I've found (one seems to be a nearly thornless variety, and some are very thorny), but at the same time, I did some rose cuttings, so that my mother wouldn't get too mad at me - out of about 20 possibles, only 9 made it, although I'll know better in the spring, and I hope to have footage of the bushes.
I also tip-rooted my black raspberries (Jewel and Bristol) and my blackberries (Chester, Apache, and Arapaho) - got some good results, but I'll know more in the spring, especially once I remove my hay mulch a bit, and once they really take off next year or so.

Well thanks a lot. No, I’ve never been a teacher, but I’ve always valued learning.
I try to relate what I would want to know, and I usually ask myself “what questions would someone standing there have”.
That is partly selfish. In the beginning, I was having to answer a lot of questions from people who made comments. I decided it was a whole lot better to try to give all the information in the video instead of having to type out answers. Having said that, I get tons of people telling me I talk way too much :-)

He would study all night just to get up and go teach his class the next day Before he became president. I think you have a lot of potential, if not in teaching than in something else. I learn to do my own after experimenting with clippings. I don't use any growth hormones, cut them long, cut an sharp angle on one end , buried them deep 7in about, leave one leaf stem 5 or 6 in a pot, flood the pot once a day or if its hot, twice. Make sure holes are semi covered with shredded paper or plastic to keep the water in long but will drain slower, it works great, they all survived. But remember to water a lot until you see new leaf sprouting then use less water until normal or planting some where in the garden, good luck.

I didn't pay attention to this seasons canes so I don't know which ones were prima and which were the other so I'll just cut back the ones that have grown out too far and hope I don't nip any fruiting canes for next year. Thks for the detailing the Blackberry propagation process, your videos are addictive. I had success in this part of the world with the cuttings following the steps you shared and now the new leaves are emerging from the nodes . I have used a basic Soilless potting mix so when should I start fertilising the pot and what should be used for same . Also would appreciate if you can share the frequency of fertilizer application as that would help establish the individual plants . Another challenge would be to keep these alive during + 100 F summers here .
I very seldom fertilize blackberries, so I can't really tell you about any 'plan of action' in that respect.
Maybe once a year I spread some 13-13-13... but most years I don't.
But... I HEAVILY mulched them initially and it takes several years to compost.
So they are getting their fertilizer from that.
TexasPrepper2 Thks for the quick revert . My query was for fertilizing during the period all bare unrooted canes are potted together in the pot and then individually in pot before transplanting in the ground .
No fertilizer when they are propagating.
You want ROOT growth... not necessarily LEAF growth
TexasPrepper2 Thks for your advise , I am exactly following your instructions and am able to start the canes with some good leaf growth but soon all the cuttings start wilting one by one . I am using sterilized potting mix , clonex , manual misting and plants are indoors under very low T5 lights ( Temp in 80’s here and without any fertilizer as suggested by you . Also I am using a dilute fungicide spray on weekly basis but cant understand why so healthy cuttings suddenly start dying . Can you share some advise that could help me save these ?

I tried this last spring on about 35 blackberry cuttings,had only one take root.Might hold off and try it this coming fall and see if it might work better.
I scrape bark off one side under soil. Roots grow out of inner bark layers

10* Most blackberries and raspberries (wild and domestic) will grow without tending. Can air growth, soil growth, ... or the new cut and rootone hormone dip and plant. 2-3 nodes and you'll have a new start in no time.
John Lord, Unfortunately, I dont think they will grow in a very dry climate without tending.
Search "cloning bucket" of some such and give it a try. Of course, modify the ideas to suit. But it does work well. 80% + success rate on cuttings. I prefer a strong aquarium air pump for aeration. Very clean and untangling roots is easy. Tomatoes, grapes, peppers... You could fit what you had in that bucket into a 5 gallon cloner.

I have a question that I feel is never addressed in Blackberry propagation videos.
Does it matter than you clone a fruiting cane? Does the cane have to be a specific age in order to be able to be cloned? Does it matter from where on the plant you take the cutting?
I ask this because if the cane dies after fruiting, would a cutting die if it were a biennial cane ?

It has to be a growing cane (which would be a first year cane).
One that has fruited will quickly die.
Absolutely you want a green young vibrant looking cane. I also like he’s rooting powder it’s also good to put them not in direct sunlight and keep them moist good luck

Yet tell everyone that you know very very good videos thank you very much keep up the good work videos are awesome do you know about biochar feed it to the hogs and cattle and goats it goes through them and helps the soil im from northern Kentucky look up the history of biochar for gardening tell everyone you know passed it on it's good for bad clay soil ok for good soil barn wood to char douse it with water then dry it out then activate it with worm castings or compost liquids first I also like rocket store Mass heaters couches and earthships homes are nice too look up sand to gold very interesting it's for deserts growing have a good day

I don't know what happened but blackberry bushes spring up in my yard like a weed, all over the place. I called myself cutting back the bushes last year to clean up and guess what happened, more blackberries and bushes this year, LOL! I gave up and decided I was going to learn to like blackberries!

I'm trying my hand this season at taming and cultivating from wild blackberries that cam up in my backyard two years ago. What FDA hardiness zone are you growing in? My area is a narrow strip of 7b in between a 7a area. I'm just wondering how much different my timing needs to be.
I'm in Zone 8.
As I said in the video... I SHOULD have done this in the fall.

I like Primacane blackberries.
I've had the best result with Prime Jan and Prime Jim... BUT... they are thorned.
The ones I have here are Prime Ark Freedom and Prime Ark Traveler.
Yet to be seen if I can recommend them. I'm not impressed with their hardiness yet.

I was taught to cut the bottom straight, and the top on an angle....! Why the angle on the top is because the rain can drain off of it! Just my two cents worth.

I just built an aeroponic cloner to root cuttings quickly. I've been searching for info in weather or not blackberries will do well in it, but haven't found anything. It works great on hard to root plants as well as easy ones, so I'm planning to try with my blackberries and rasberries. I was wondering if you're familiar with this method? It would make a great series of videos if you made one.
I've read stuff on it, but never tried it.

Fall and winter is best. I haven't had much success in summer... BUT... if you wanted to take them inside (or maybe a shaded place) you might have better success.

Question about your cuttings from someone that doesn't have any knowledge in this area, what is the difference between root cuttings and stem cuttings
(I think) Root cuttings come from below the ground.
They are actual pieces of root tissue.
Blackberries propagate well from "root cuttings".
Not sure about other plants.
I thought you was supposed to put a bag over them to hold in the moisture so they don’t dry out and put them in light away for the sun, while keeping soil moist.
I've done them indoors, outdoors, covered, not covered, misted, not misted, etc.
The best success was under a misting system that misted about every 5 minutes.
BUT... summer has never been a good time for me to propagate (in hot TX summers)
Can they be left like this over winter?
Mid August now (zone 7) about to put my cuttings in the pots.
If in the south, I would plant them in the fall.
If in the north, ask a nursery near you how they will do in pots in winter

In Z7 you can leave them in the pots.
Think about it... that's exactly what the nurseries in Z7 will do. They'll leave all their stuff to overwinter in the pots :)

Great Idea....I pruned our black berries and blueberries just the day before yesterday here in Georgia before it turned off cold again. Just left the clippings lying on the ground because I had no idea you could do this with em. My question is,Is it worth my time to pick the clippings up now if i soak them for a day in water? And,can this be done with the BlueBerries also?
I think they are still viable... at least most should be.
Make sure you do a lot more than you think you need, as you'll have a lot of "duds".
If you soak them, I would only do it for a few minutes.
BUT... make sure you know which way is UP and which way is DOWN.
That's the only problem you may have... trying to determine which end to put in the pot mix.

Ok thanks. I know last year I took a sucker off a Tomato plant and soaked it in water until it formed roots and then I transplanted it in soil. Turned out to be a really nice plant. And yea, there wasn't any doubt as to which way was up on my clippings. 👍
I won't have may to try because my plants are very few and not very big. But hopefully that'll change soon.
Can you cut the long stem from the mother plant, and cut smaller pieces from it to pot many?
Or, do you only take the one tip portion and plant it?
You can do several cuttings from each stem.
Make sure you know which way is 'up'.
Don't try to root them upside down.
I just put them in a glass of water until I see roots. I might change the water every couple days

Would it help to water and mist; Then put a plastic bag over the plants? Also, keep out of the sun until the bag can come off after they are rooted? Thanks for the video.
I'm afraid it would be too humid, and cause them to get "slimey" and rot... maybe not... I just haven't tried it... yet.
Misting off and on all day is also humid wouldn't you say? Using a plastic bag would keep them from drying out till rooted, and I think that is the ideal. Any way thank you for commenting back to me.

One question. Are the PrimeArk Freedoms supposed to be evergreen? I know we haven't had a lot of winter, but mine didn't lose their leaves. Still green. I'm just south of Ft. Worth, TX. I got 10 of 10 to survive and am looking forward to my first real harvest this year.
They will keep most of their leaves. They'll shed some of them... but not all.

I have two thornless blackberries. One had orange rust. Everything I’ve read is that it is best to remove the plant and destroy it, is that correct or is there anything that can be done? Also, can I take cuttings from the plant with the orange rust?
It may not be "orange rust" but just a fungus.
I wouldn't take it out unless you KNOW it's orange.

Thank you for the quick reply. I watched your other video. I am almost positive it is orange rust. At the very beginning before the leaves start to die it looks like someone went around with a bright orange spray paint bottle and sprayed the underside of my plant. It seems to be affecting only a small area of my one plant. I am debating cutting it off and destroying it and spraying with something. I have some Safers Defender Garden Fungicide. I am in Canada so I am not sure if that product is available in the US. Would you suggest I try liquid copper? Thank you!!!

The copper is what I use.
Also, some use LiquaCop in combination with NEEM oil.
You might want to research that and see if it's a viable solution.

I did this in February. Summer propagation never worked very well for me... too hot. I use THIS year's cuttings, from the pruning process. LAST year's canes will start dying as soon as they produce berries.

I dump the pot out and separate the roots carefully.

I’ve tried doing this probably 10 times and cannot get a single one to root. They all turn black and die within a week or so. I’ve tried misting, I’ve tried with a lid making a little greenhouse, I’ve tried shade and sun...I’m at a loss.
Have you tried indoors? I've had very little success doing this in the summer. Fall and early spring is best. If I were trying it right now, I would do it indoors. That way, you can mist more often too... :)

Question I am having problems with my prime ark freedoms The leaves are crinkled and some canes are huge. The prime travelers are doing great same soil and mulch but the freedoms are having problems. Have you had any problems like this. The seller said to cut out the promblem parts and fertilize with 10-10-10
It could be fungus, lack of water, too much fertilizer, insect damage... too many issues to try to diagnose.
My Freedom's didn't do well at all.
Some have said that theirs did OK... but a lot have told me their Freedom berries didn't do well.
Careful with fertilizer... it can burn them.
I have no idea what a prime ark freedom is compared to a prime traveler. Please explain. I'm assuming it has to do with how the berries grow with a thick stalk going upward and then there are the offshoots from that? I now have thornless blackberries growing as well as my new boysenberry plants from Oregon growing and I'm in Wenatchee, Washington in a high desert environment. I should try and root these in the fall and keep them till next spring?

They love the heat.
How long should I mist them before they are gonna make roots? Days? Weeks?
It differs, but I would say weeks.
I've not had great success in summer, so not sure.
You should be able to see some roots in the holes in the bottoms of the pots.
That's when I know I'm getting a good root system and can transplant into individual pots.

Most blackberries will do well in TX, but not sure about those.

I think so. This has always worked better for me in the fall.

When do you clip to propagate?
Fall and early winter is best. Summer has not worked well for me.
If it's summer or cold winter, they would do best indoors.
You'd probably have better success if you used clean tools and don't ream a pre hole just put the cutting straight in the soil it's not good to have an air pockets. 2 cutting per 1 gallon pot. As long as it works for you.

The box has directions on it. Follow them.
Actually, it is a VERY small amount of D&G to water ratio. There is about 1/8" of D&G in that little flask. The rest is water.
past experience has been if hard to root 5 parts water to one part dip and grow , medium ease of rooting 10 parts water to one part d&g and very easy to root then 15 to one

I lay 1st year cane growing tips down near end of fruiting season in late September. Then cut off from main plant about 6 inches from the ground in late April to mid May here in Ontario Canada.
About how many suckers does an average blackberry plant produce in the spring.
If you are talking about the shoots that come up from the ground voluntarily... Probably one or 2 maybe more
Thanks TX Prepper2 I watched many of your videos last summer. I now want to make my patch larger next summer. I watched one of your videos where a sucker was growing out of the row. You had moved to a row. Can I move them any season such as summer when they get say a foot tall, prune back & getting as much root and possible and start a new row?
Summer is tough on a new plant.
I always go to a pot first, then plant in the fall or spring

Fruit trees are harder to propagate than Blackberries... but it CAN be done.

Depends on your climate, but I wouldn't let them get too hot.
I haven't had much success propagating in the summer.
Well my problem was that I did take some cuttings and they all died. within 2/3 weeks. I had 5 of them, I think they got too hot because I had them in a humidity dome. I don't use rooting hormone btw. I hope my next cuttings will grow, I have 6 of them now, with a humidity dome, but I try to open it a lot, so it doesn't get too hot. You mean close together?
If so... I do it that way, then separate them into individual pots when they form a good root system.

You can still propagate for your OWN use... as I understand the law (but research it yourself)
@@BIGALTX OK I did some research, seems to be unlawful to propegate and/or sell patented plants. Apparently the patents run out after 20 years. I didn't see a distinction about personal use, but I might have missed it, I'll look some more tomorrow. I enjoy your blackberry vids btw.
