      So, in combination to other points brought up in this thread, I'll add Jacob Colliers explaination to Adam Neeley's. A432 is tuned down from A440, which according to science, puts it a little flatter than normal to our ears, which are more or less tuned to A440 these days. And so it being lower in pitch sounds warmer to our ear. If we tuned to say, A450, it would be brighter, and sharper to our ears. That's all it really is, is a conversation on bright vs warm and to what degree. It's just a way to add subtle flavor to a piece of music, and has a lot less to do with frequencies and universal vibration than the psudospiritual A432 cultists would like to think.

      @mookiess 2 года назад +1

      sugsug not really, saying it's mainly from funeral would mean (at least from what i interpreted) that this tune would seem more distinct to the funeral one, and i couldn't see anything that confirmed this. It's the same excerpt found in both songs, same tune and all. Nothing further to distinguish it as being more "funeral" was included here.
      A lot of Ichika's songs have snippets from the short audios, yet they still feel unique and distinct from each other despite the connection. So i guess i just find it more right to consider that the piece is either both a part of the songs, or mainly from the two, not one or the other.
      However, if you're referring about how funeral was the original and therefore, it is the origin in which the tune itself stemmed from, then you'd be correct it being mainly due to funeral's existence. Yknow at this point, idk why i even bothered to think so much over this lol, i think i haven't touched enough grass.

    If anyone is curious i'll share the actual science behind WHY 432hz is the genuine tuning standard as opposed to the 440hz used today (or 435hz from 1859 - 1939)
    The reason? A=432hz is an equal-tempered scale, which is a type of frequency scale where all the notes have been mathematically adjusted to sound in harmony with each other throughout the entire musical range. as it is mathematically based on the overtone series of A and all corresponding notes.
    At its core, music is pure mathematics - calculable air vibrations whose frequencies overlap according to physical rules. These frequencies stand in certain mathematical relations to each other. If you build the pure tuning on the 432 Hz frequency, not only all octaves result in the cross sum 9, but also every note of the chromatic 12 scale.
    There is no other scale that has this property.
    Hope this helps clear the air a bit, since most people just claim its the earths natural frequency. Which isn't necessarily wrong, its just incomplete.
    The electromagnetic waves generated by the earth that are present within its atmosphere have a frequency of 8hz, when counting up 5 octaves, you reach 256hz. This frequency is C in the scale where A is 432Hz, which is in parity with the frequency of the electromagnetic waves generated by the earth. Anyways that's where the whole "natural frequency" claim originated, its not wrong, most just take it at face value without learning the mathematics behind why. Now you do! :D

    This is really just a testament to some basic rules of thumb with tones. Lower tones sound better for melody and are more moving to us, but with chords higher frequencies sound better because there are less overtones interacting and making mud.

  • @zacanger
    @zacanger 2 года назад +362

    Either/or. The idea that 432 is some magical number seems to have originally been promoted by Verdi but been popularized by the Lyndon LaRouche movement. Historically the actual frequency of "A" varied wildly showing a generally upward trend until the mid 1800s, when the French standardized it at 435hz. There's no real scientific reason for 432 to feel different than 440, unless played right after one another (obviously). And of course in reality we all just tune to the bass player since it's faster that way.

    It does make a difference if you use the same strings.
    One reason I've seen for raising pitch in orchestras over the years is that they sound better - particularly stringed instruments: you get more harmonics.
    It fairly easy to check for yourself:
    Take a 12 string acoustic, tune to 440, and put a capo on the 2nd fret.
    Play a piece and record that.
    Then tune the same guitar to 415 (which sounds as a half step lower), put the capo on the third fret, and play the same piece.
    You'll definitely hear the difference in how the strings behave and respond.
    Pitching ever higher has the obvious drawback that the tension goes up too - which will, in acoustic instruments, cause issues over time.

      @@coryturke7336 yeah I believe we just tune everything to 440 so we have general tuning consistency between instruments. Nobody is going to tune down a piano for a jam sesh or performance of some kind so if we have a standardized tuning frequency then all the instruments playing together will be in tune together. Kind of like how we have 12 tone equal temperament tuning which is a kind of compromise allowing us to play in any key on instruments like piano and guitar. Most people don't even know that to play a chord in tune the 3rd of the chord has to be something like 20cents flat and the 5th is supposed to be about 2cents sharp in order to make those frequencies align perfectly but that means we would have to adjust certain notes every time they came up as a different part of a chord. It was just easier to make everything "equally out of tune" (this is where the name 12 tone equal temperament comes from) so that instruments that don't play only one note at a time can play in all keys and we just got used to hearing out of tune chords.
      Went a little bit down the rabbit hole on that but I also wanted to say that other cultures use different tunings as well. I know for sure that in Japan they tune to a lower frequency and this could be the case for many other countries, some of which might even tune up. Very interesting especially when microtonal music/instruments are taken into consideration

Also Robert Edward Grant spent countless hours using mathematical formulas to prove by 432 is more resonant and better than 440. when you make general statements it’s as if you stopped looking for the answers, I read multiple articles in order to come to my conclusions and have undeniable formulas with numbers to argue my point in favor of 432.

    I would say that the first one sounded more full, and more confident as far as tone goes, but the second one each note was crystalline clear and very emotional in its own right, so for which sounds better? Depends on what you’re thinking about and feeling at the time, at first listen maybe the more full sounding, resolved feel of the first may be better, and on a second listen, the more nostalgic sound of each note ringing together may strike your ear better. That is why music is amazing, because the same thing twice is not ever the same thing it was the first time…

      I’ve read numerous articles comparing the earths frequency also known as the Schumann resonance to 440 and 432. 432 is used by all natural organisms therefore it is far more relevant than any other tuning and that’s why we used it for thousands of years.

      @@alexanderallegra432 the Schumann resonance isn't exactly 432 though, clearly you don't know the science behind music. The Schumann resonance actually has a fundamental closer to 430.4 Hertz, not 432 Hertz. Every frequency played second after the first is going to sound better, if it was 432 Hertz then 440 Hertz you would prefer 440, right? Honestly, it doesn't matter what frequency you prefer or like, but to say one sounds subjectively 'better' is utter nonsense. Also, we haven't used it for thousands of years, standard baroque tuning for A was actually closer to A flat, so it's not like we've used it for the entire duration of human history. The most fun is what happens when you use them both at the same time. The frequency ratio 440/432 simplifies to 55/54, and this comma has the property that it turns a minor third (which is a 6/5 just ratio) into a neutral third (which is an 11/9 just ratio), that is (55/54)(6/5) = (11/9).
    So if you play minor thirds and sevenths while tuned to 440Hz, and then play the tonics, fifths and maybe the fourths while tuned to 432Hz, you should end up with a really nice blues scale. Of course, if you're playing a guitar, you'd normally just bend the notes. :D

But if you take two copies of 12 equal and separate them by 55/54 (i.e. one tuned to A = 440Hz and the other tuned to A = 432Hz), it's not quite an equally tempered tuning system any more. You have alternating gaps of 31.7 and 68.2 cents.
      I just realized though that there's a little bit of a problem with this scheme: 12 equal's minor third is already 15.6 cents flat of a justly tuned 6/5, and that means when we raise it by 31.7 cents, we're the same 15.6 cents flat of the 11/9 neutral third, but 16.1 cents sharp of the 6/5 minor third. Still, it probably works well enough to get some really nice bluesy things happening.

    Verdi tuning captures when sound uniformly resonates and behaves within nature. Our ears may not immediately distinguish a qualitative improvement in this microtonal difference, but when we look at how the sound (vibrations in air) behaves in this tuning, something very impressive occurs. The fact that a master luthier naturally found a balance in the resonance of this harmonic range (A=432hz) when designing instruments for exhibiting for the best range of dynamics and quality of sound in concerts, he didn't even know half of what we would go on to discover about his tuning through the study of cymatics (see tonoscopes and the chladni plate)...

    For the record: exactly 440hz is the note: A4. This is the modern standard and any note a semitone above is (12th root of 2, or about 1.059463094359295) times is frequency.
    This ensures that an octave is exactly double the frequency of a root note: A4 is 440hz, A5 is 880hz, A3 is 220hz.
    There was a debate on what would be the universally accepted frequency as to set a perfect standard for the world: 440hz or 432hz.
    Some sick, twisted mathematics said it should’ve been 438.689 or something like that because it has some kind of mathematical, geometrical symmetries through our universe, but let’s be honest: these were psycho mathematicians LOL.
    We eventually settled on 440hz, and I believe this is because of the slightly more pleasing high-end, crisp tone and the fact that since instruments after good wear and tear begin to slightly fall flat, it is better to be a bit too sharp than a bit too flat.
    This has become the modern standard, and has stayed this way for several decades, but 432hz music still exists and Ichika is here to (in a beautiful way) ask you: “Hey! Which one do you like more?”

      It was sought after through ambiguous, rigorous academic debate, not empirical, unfalsifiable science.
      It basically makes as much sense as having 10 different numbers in a single digit to use as our math system. If for chance, why not use 8, or 9, or 12, or even 20 numbers in one digit?
      It’s an arbitrary, but necessary method of standardization.
      Besides, I said ~438.69…hz was considered among many as pertaining to its mathematical geometrical universality, not unlike the constant, Phi, not 440 and I never said it was for division reasons.
      440=2*2*2*5*11
      432=2*2*2*2*3*3*3

    Don't listen to music for a while then enjoy 'A'.
    Don't listen to music for a while then enjoy 'B'.
    Personally, unless you have keen absolute pitch, I really don't think this matters that much. I do not have absolute pitch, so I am biased. However from a practical standpoint, tuning is more about what you want the basslines to sound like. As a musician, you need to ask yourself these questions:
    1.) What bass notes do I have access to?
    2.) What bass notes do I want at any given time?
    3.) If I played the music in a different key, will the bass notes/harmonic content sound the way I intend to convey?
    4.) (if producing an album) Do I need to have different keys of songs in order to give the listener subliminal variety?
    Sometimes playing a certain piece of music in a lower key will make the bassline sound more powerful. Other times, it will make the bassline sound indistinct and boomy, or even worse: muddy. However, tune a piece of music too high and the bassline will lose potency: however, sometimes you want a piece of music to chime only in the trebles like a music box. This is wonderful piece of music that I think fits the music box paradigm of my own imagination. Therefore, I prefer the higher pitched version for that reason alone. It shines better -- might even survive a couple semitones higher without sounding like a mosquito.

    I mean, I'm used to 432. It's only an 18 cent difference. 440 only sounds slightly sharper and brighter. The whole thing started in the early days of recording to tape because of adjustable recording speeds, meaning variances in pitch. There's no real hocus pocus behind it. Technically earlier than that cause it was supposedly a favorite concert pitch of Verdi. He probably used it live in the orchestra pit because the added mid range would be easier heard and projected.

    I closed my eyes to help prevent some sort of bias and I felt like the 2nd one felt fuller, while the 1st one sounded kind of tinny. Looks like I enjoy 432 more. I thought I'd prefer 440, since that is what all my instruments are tuned to and it would sound more familiar. I was wrong. Neat.

    432 sounds like how I imagined any music needs to be.
