My favorite part about Edison is that, to me, it really is what Yugioh should be. You can have your combo deck and eat your control deck too, without it being a slog at the same time. And there are a ton of decks, and we’re still finding new decks and new tech to play.
Exactly. It was the point when Yugioh matured out of the cave man era and before it became an Extra deck spamming game with the generic summoning of xyzs
I don't like that point that much since Goat format gives that experience too (people will hate you if you play combo but combo is 100% viable).
Edison is great because it is so incredibly varied and because it has Stardust Dragon.
@@asimhussain8716 Or maybe because I prefer the way modern yugioh plays? Maybe both formats are completely different and saying one is strictly better than another is stupid? Dear lord once Edison format became popular the obnoxious players started coming in... just like GOAT format...
@@nigerianprinceajani goat it too caveman
@@ahmadazem4167 I, too, prefer Edison. That doesn't mean my point doesn't stand.
I think what makes Edison great is that it's a very swingy format, you can do some crazy combo plays, but no deck really natively plays omni negates or can establish a floodgate that would be universal, other than Krystia maybe, but that one feels earned for the effort. Meanwhile you have a lot of crazy powerful comeback cards like DAD, judgement dragon or EHero Abolute Zero. It so rarely feels like a game is over before the other player has had a chance to respond. It also varies in tempo quite significantly. Sometimes you have the diva pop off turns, but often it is still difficult to just out a 1900 vanilla and setting a ryko is becomes real power play.
The effort of opening Valhalla, such massive investment for a "fuck you I win stop playing yugioh" card.
@@joanaguayoplanell4912e said in hasn’t played Edison.
Literally no one plays that card.
@@joanaguayoplanell4912 There's still tons of common removal for Kristya. No floodgate back then automatically wins you the game.
@@xCorvus7xqueen of thorns is such a funny floodgate
@@ThatOneWeirdFlex It is, the original tax enforcer.
october 2015 was my favorite format. djinn was banned but all the duea decks were still viable, kozmo was just introduced, norden, psyframe omega and decatron were all newly legal. Basically after High-Speed Riders released but before Dimensions of Chaos, culminating with YCS Dallas 2015. Super diverse with nekroz, shaddoll, b.a., qli, infernoid, ritual beast, tellar, dark law hero, volcanic, yang zing
Agreed
fr man that was the most fun i had playing yugioh, i wish this format gets revisited like edison
Facts great thing for yugioh
This format has pepe or is this before the structure deck?
@@uoDucks6 the master of pendulum structure deck was legal but it wouldn't be competitive until dimensions of chaos released in november (odd-eyes vortex dragon, majespecters, etc)
One of my favorite formats is the INOV format (Metalfoes, ABC, PaleoFrog) but with DDD legal, right before Zoodiac. The decks were well balanced to eachother and the ceiling between meta and rogue was pretty low. It's a format definitely worth revisiting, if only to throw the DDD players a bone with how little time that deck had to shine.
I play that too
@@bobbybero7452yeah solid format, i recently played a couple of metalfoes vs paleo games, really enjoyable.
Is there an inov community I can look up? This was the era I played the most and would love to revisit it.
Not that I'm aware of, but I would not be suprised if there is one.@@fernandocruz8369
My problem with toss is the community doesn't agree what banlist to play.
We did a vote and October was choosen.
I want to play time wizrad, I don't want to get nibiru, shifter and dark ruler
ye those 3 cards also hurt every deck besides skystriker-orcust, which becomes without a doubt the absolute best deck.
i think april 2019 with DANE legal (released in may) is the way, that way every deck has their tools and the rps between top decks is pretty balanced
July 2019 post banlist would be my pick. The format seems more fair and balanced after the banlist and we didn't have nibiru/dark ruler yet.
@@DeepSolid43 agreed i can play my boi eclipse wyvren
Whats a wizrad? Is this a new card or a typo?
I haven't played because of tearlaments/branded despia/lab
@@plzcme434 june is fine too but rusty, multifaker and gazelle are some of the most wtf hits in the context of a format that was already healthy before the list
I really hope TOSS takes off someday. My friend and I have been playing it a ton and it's been so fun. We've been using the toss format website's setup for it which uses the July 2019 banlist with Rising Rampage being the last legal set (before the mega tins). My favorite part about TOSS is that end boards for the most part aren't unbreakable so games don't just boil down to whether or not the person going 2nd drew their blowout card. Being able to play modern Yugioh, but not having to worry about Nib, Dark Ruler, etc. is awesome.
Sus
I'm kinda interested in the format directly after TOSS, but before any new sets got released. there was a large diversity of decks that were viable, a lot iconic from the games history, salamangreat, pendulums, shadols, phantom nights, so many others. shame format was right before master rule 5 (still continued into the start of MR5), and MR5 was so close to covid, so no one really got to play it or remember it.
it is possible the format may be shit once we start looking at it. it was very underdeveloped so we may not have discovered the optimal strat, and mystic mine was legal even though it was not used at the time
GOAT and Edison can also WAY cheaper than playing current meta, which makes it more accessible to everyone.
With like 3-5 reprints it would be as dirt cheap as possible (Thunder King Rai-Oh is still a bit ridiculous for example).
I wish "start playing edison" didn't also mean "start over your collection from scratch"
You can build a deck for under 100 easily. I built an all common dragon otk deck for like 30 bucks
It only means that if you started playing recently.
edison decks cost literal pennies
@@asimhussain8716 It was mostly just extra deck staples which means all future decks are cheaper to build. Plus i have years of random bulk and i have found tons of edison playable cards which saves me some money
you dont need to build a deck in max rarity. most of these cards have bajillions of reprints at common you can pick up for like 5 cents.
Toss nats 2019 is best format tbh all 4 decks are super strong at that point and a lot of things were still very undiscovered
My business partner/testing partner and I play TOSS anytime we wanna brush up for standard play. It's the best way to sharpen your modern Yu-Gi-Oh! skills.
(Other legacy formats are strictly for enjoyment.)
Did gage's main deck only have 39 cards? Also did he have 3 skill drain in his side deck even tho im pretty sure it's semi'd in edison?
I feel like that is something I look forward to with the Speed Duel sets is the eventual 5DS sets.
The GX Speed Duel sets are definitely a step in the right direction for getting to the Yugioh I'm most nostalgic for since just those alone brought the GX card pools to an Edison esque Speed with more modern cards thrown into the archetypes that needed a helping hand.
For context my friends and I just get two of each set to make 40 card decks and don't usually utilize the character cards since most of the decks seem to function as is... Unless they're playing GateClown lol.
To be completely honest, I don't think that the goat/2023 formats are better than each other. They both are very different, and should be treated as such.
Goat sucks. It sucked in 2005 when I played it. It still sucks in 2023. The first good competitive format in that Era is the microformat December 2006 to March 2007.
I hate all the goat apologia as someone who legitimately played competitively back then.
Nah, goat sucks
Edison is much more fun and much easier to teach newbies than 2023 yugioh in my opinion 🤷♂️
@@ChuuniKaede The meta, and by that extent also the playstyle of decks, is completely different nowadays compared to back in 2005 though?
I don't think any of the lists that topped back then have even the slightest of a chance in the current goat meta, even if we adjust for pre-boarding against i.e. chaos turbo instead of goat control
Watching people play goats cure my insomnia
what a nice young man
To what is that a reference?
Tra Go Edia 😅
I wasn’t playing Yugioh at this time so I just don’t have much nostalgia for it. It’s definitely fun but lives on nostalgia for me. I’m more nostalgic for dragon ruler format, and 2016-2017 format.
I'm kinda interested in the format directly after TOSS, but before any new sets got released. there was a large diversity of decks that were viable, a lot iconic from the games history, salamangreat, pendulums, shadols, phantom nights, so many others. shame format was right before master rule 5 (still continued into the start of MR5), and MR5 was so close to covid, so no one really got to play it or remember it.
it is possible the format may be shit once we start looking at it. it was very underdeveloped so optimal strats were not discovered, and mystic mine was legal even though it was not widely used at the time
Been there, had all that, wouldn't want it back
i love how the card text is actually visible and doesnt require zooming like 99% of cards nowadays
To me the problem with GOAT is that the card pool is too tight and that best decks are better than the others by a fair amount.
Edison surely has its own best decks, but they're not that much stronger than the others, and do to the variety of comparable decks in terms of strength, we can hope it not being solvable as a format
We shouldve stayed in 2010 forever man. I miss those times so much. Yugiohs peak
If I want to play Edison, I'll load up Duel Transer or Tag Force 4-5.
I find it interesting that Edison is catching so much popularity but it’s different to what Edison actually was. Perfect microcosm of this is Dark End Dragon. Figuratively no one had that card during actual Edison as it was an $800+ prize card and wasn’t a necessity like CCV was. If you look at the top 16 decklists, not one Dark End Dragon can be found. It’s kinda crazy to me that people allow a card which easily closes out games in modern Edison that players in actual Edison never really had to expect/play around. I’ve had so many grind games in modern Edison both won and lost for me because final turn involved getting out an extra deck card that plays around strong Edison staples stardust and Ryko and still being able to attack for 2100
I mean the largest appeal of playing historic events *is* the fact that you can do stuff like this.
A lot of players couldn't afford $200-$300 Judgment Dragons either.
@@mojo873 you’ve got it off here. I’m not trying to gatekeeper or be a snob, but I played back then and trust me, they had the JDs. But that was because JD was necessary. DED is an $800 luxury. JD was like Megalo in 2013 ($120+) or aluber in 2021 pre reprint ($160+). If it’s a mainstream card they will pay it. But a prize luxury? Out of context
@@danlay638 As someone who also played back then, I can assure you that not everyone played Lightsworns because not everyone could afford JDs. Same with Dark Armed, even though it got cheaper after the banlist.
The people that could afford to get any card no matter the price were also the people winning the Dark End Dragons, or buying them.
Something being a prize card has never stopped the top end players from getting it if they felt it was good enough. (Stein, Emperor, etc)
And the only reason that Dark End Dragon wasn't an extra deck staple was absolutely because it was a prize card that very few players could get.
For a super modern format that got basically 0 time in the spotlight i'd say DABL pre MAMA.
YES
W formet I remember playing a regional on the opening week of DABL not to crazy powerful but also wacky stuff everywhere. Man..
I honestly hate Nhym. His takes on affordability are toxic at best, and he does that while also burning as much money as possible on max rarity decks. It just embodies the mind set that "people should have to pay hundreds of dollars if they want to get into Yugioh."
I feel like im the only person who loves the format of the first MD tournament was in, adventure, a million hand traps, crossout, halq, overpowered floodgate decks that are outable via adventure engine, its insane and ridiculously overpowered but I enjoyed it alot, alot of decks were doing unfair things but it was really diverse and felt fair in how unfair every deck was playing, I had fun.
3:54 , most based thing joshua has ever said, idk about the other 2 formats he mentioned tho lmao 2011- 2013 is peak
Gage doesn’t deserve the LADD mat after the way he disrespected Trag
>Future Fusion
and just like that I don't wanna relive it
I don’t know much about rarities and values of cards so if I played against that deck I’d be like “ooh cool shiny” not knowing it’s worth more than my dads car
While I enjoy tengu, hat and toss I think the problem with them is they already have a lot of the stuff that people are playing retro formats to get away from in the first place. Edison kind of falls right before cards like effect veiler, Maxx c, tour guide etc change the way yugioh is played forever.
Maybe in 5 years there will be something else people want to get away from and those formats will get their chance to shine again.
Except the cards you mentioned are great card design in the context of 2011
Wow what a deck. Holy shit
I think more recent formats are maybe TOSS or nekroz that people kind of like?
Idk what later formats people like.
HAT & edison greatest metas!
Love the edison hype. ❤ i feel those moans when seeing the oldschool high rare stuff
I miss lightsworns. Such a great time 😢
I know people tell me all the time to play Edison. I can't, though. I was living a very country part of Maryland during synchro and early zexal (2008-2012), and the closest locals was 2 hours away. No way my parents drive me there. The card pool only goes up to TSHD. My favorite part of 5ds starts after this, everything not named Lightsworns, GB or plants I wasn't really instrested in to that point. And finally I don't like priority, never liked it, also keep in mind I was only playing competitive for liked, before we got booted to the countryside. I was never a fan of my opponent getting to use non on summon effects before I could respond. It never sat well with me. I can't go back at this point. Really, anything pre-2014 to be honest, but definitely not anything post no priority.
I hope Branded/Swordsoul post protos ban becomes a format
meine reaction wär glaub identisch gewesen, nice sympathiepunkte!
My only complaint about Edison (as well as both 2007 formats) is that SJC Prize cards are allowed.

Kann man spell book, ba und nixenrüstung in adison format spielen wenn nicht wo kann man diese decks spielen?
I'm sorry but I started playing at the very beginning, i did not care for it or goat format whatsoever so I stopped playing at 2004, I did collect. Came back briefly in 2014 but really came back for good 2018 and honestly. I like and prefer Modern Yugioh
@@asimhussain8716There was a time where proper handtrap usage, routing and other modern skills were pretty cool. I can understand liking modern but I am just burned out

Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude finally höre ich mal, dass mal jemand tengu plant als geiles Format nennt 😍 Spiele dieses Format seit 2011 immer mal wieder mit meinem Bruder und es bockt einfach immer. That's actually the correct pronunciation of Tragoedia btw, it's a real Latin word
Also I love speed duel secrets idc 😂
Why is it that all yugitubers seem to be seriously trying to discourage people from playing yugioh? There not a single yugituber that hasn't done clickbait with some doomsday video title. "The end of yugioh" "The worst format ever" "Yugioh is over" "the death of yugioh". It's like they really don't want this game to exist.
Did you even read the whole title lmao shut up man
No one wants the game to die, the titles just gets them views
Clickbait gets views probably, other than that if konami sees an extreme rise in edison play they might try to slow the current game down to match it, which many players have been wanting from konami for ages
It's just clickbait. MBT and Gage still go to modern events.
It’s their entire revenue of course they don’t want it to die. Modern yugioh just has a lot of problems and there’s nothing wrong with talking about them.
They all still go to events and play the modern game. except like team aps and cimo (I think) but even Paul plays Master duel daily.
Goat is still the goat for me. I enjoy the pace.
If you like goat you'll like the better format December 2006 to March 2007. This was the 3 month period of time where stein was banned but before t hero and perfect circle power crept the slower style of play.

TENGU > EDISON. Less bullshit, more answers to stuff, more REAL deck choices. EDISON is basically narrowing down to playing blackwing and maybe the odd monarch/ hero list
I was reslly close to commenting under his video. This video just feels like a "let me show of all my max rarity stuff. No really look at it!!!" Kind of video. The point is valid but this is such a fomo feelsbad kind of video -.-
Is another clickbait title that at the end only discourage people from playing yugioh. Team APS has been doing this for a long time where they just complain about the game to talk about how it was in the past.
