- Academy award winner & Hollywood Star Russell Crowe, teams up with Jeff Leyton & musical director Jim Sheridan from the late late show, in a sensational Confrontation duet from Claude Michel Schönberg & Alain Boublil, Blockbuster hit, Les Miserables. This has been an incredible worldwide hit for producer Cameron Mackintosh.
The main opposing characters Jean Valjean and Javert sing "The Confrontation". Jean Valjean, a morally conflicted paroled convict, prisoner 24601, and the protagonist. Failing to find work with his yellow parole note and redeemed by the Bishop of Digne's mercy, he tears his passport up and conceals his identity (under the alias "Monsieur Madeleine" and later "Monsieur Fauchelevent") in order to live his life again as an honest man. However, Javert constantly pursues him.
Adaptation of Victor Hugo's 1862 novel of the same name, by Claude-Michel Schönberg (music), Alain Boublil, Jean-Marc Natel (original French lyrics) and Herbert Kretzmer (English lyrics). The original French musical premiered in Paris in 1980 with direction by Robert Hossein. Its English-language adaptation by producer Cameron Mackintosh has been running in London since October 1985, making it the longest-running musical in the West End and the second longest-running musical in the world.

Lyrics for the Confrontation.
Valjean, at last,
We see each other plain
Monsieur le Maire
You wear a different chain!
Before you say another word, Javert
Before you chain me up like a slave again
Listen to me! There is something I must do.
This woman leaves behind a suffering child.
There is none but me who can intercede,
In Mercy's name, three days are all I need.
Then I'll return, I pledge my word.
Then I'll return
You must think me mad!
I've hunted you across the years
Men like you can never change
A man such as you.
(Men like you can never change)
Believe of me what you will
(Men like me can never change)
There is a duty that I'm sworn to do
(No,)
You know nothing of my life
(24601)
All I did was steal some bread
(My duty's to the law - you have no rights)
You know nothing of the world
(Come with me 24601)
You would sooner see me dead
(Now the wheel has turned around)
But not before I see this justice done
(Jean Valjean means nothing now)
I am warning you Javert
(Dare you talk to me of crime)
I'm a stronger man by far
(And the price you had to pay)
There is power in me yet
(Every man is born in sin)
My race is not yet run
(Every man must choose his way)
You know nothing of Javert
I was born inside a jail
I was born with scum like you
I am from the gutter too!

Thank you for all your support and comments. Jeff.
I seriously don't get why people criticise Crowes singing.
It's because he has a limited range. This song plays to that and masks the issue. Compare "Look Down" with Russel Crowe to the Tenth Anniversary broadway performance found on RUclips under the channel of allexkellitexnhs. That, or he [Crowe] doesn't project enough.
Don't get me wrong, I love the actor. I love his work. But, he just kinda lacks in the singing department.
I also reccomend watching the 10th anniversary of "Confrontation". Then for "Stars". Then, repeat all three videos with the actor Norm Lewis.
because his voice doesnt lend itself to the type of music of Les Mis
I strongly agree -- he has a very powerful voice, great breath control, clear tones. If he should have a limited range, it doesn't show in this piece. Every singer plays to their particular range!
I don't get it too. I think Russell has always had such a deep and beautiful voice, singing and speaking (i've heard that he's a formidable story-teller). And whatsmore, he always gives it all. 100%.👌🆒️💯♥️🌹🦋😍
@@jasonallison87 Well, he always tries his best in everything he does, acting, singing... but I don't see the need for making comparisons. He might not be the most qualified singer in the world, but he does really well. And his voice... not many can compare to his.👌🆒️💯♥️🦋🎸😍🎶🔥
Like fine wine, both improved with age
He sounds so much better here than in the actual movie
People complain that Russel Crowe doesn't have a good vocal range, but i disagree. His range is fine, it's just in a lower register than most of the singers who have portrayed Javert on stage. Listen to how low he goes on the word "chain" and how long he sustains it for, which is not easy to do. Personally i think it works really well for this role because it adds contrast between the voices of Javert and Valjean and makes it easier to distinguish what each character is saying.
P.S. I thought he was great in the movie as well. It's true that some of the parts he sings weren't quite as good as the live version ("One Day More" comes to mind), but the songs that do work (such as "Confrontation" and "Stars") work *really* well. His acting also brings out a more subtle and empathetic side of the character that, for me at least, makes his version the definitive one.
Stars definitely didn't work...
I think Russell Crowe is a great actor and also sings very well. Stars was not a very good match for his voice or his style, and that irked many Les Mis fans (myself included). It's not really a failure of his, rather it was an unfortunate casting, at least for that song.
The Crowe vs The GOAT! Crowe has been gifted total redemption. Phenomenal performance by both 🎉
People were so nasty about Russell when he done the movie, I thought he absolutely smashed it. This is amazing well done both of you!
Russell was absolutely fabulous Meatymelon. Thanks for your comment. Jeff.
To be honest, the movie recording of Crowe doesn't do his [Crowe's] voice justice; this isn't meant to be a criticism of him or the movie but to me it was clear that Crowe could sing but something (production, direction?) wasn't letting him sound the best.
@@DavidLloydDSL you might enjoy the video "why the music is le mis is worse than you thought" from the channel Sideways. He really gets into all the hoops the performers had to jump through to meet the directors expectations and behind the scenes info that explains why a lot of the performances in the movie weren't that great even though the people singing were actually quite good.
If memory serves correct crowe was not originally trained as an operatic singer. So his portrayal was amazing for lacking the standard training most singers have for that role.
His singing is definitely better in this than the movies, there he had to sing live on set for multiple takes while giving a convincing performance and sword fighting with Hugh jackman. In this he just has to focus on singing and does great.
I came across the 17 Valjeans video the other week and after hearing those 2 lines delivered by Jeff Leyton I had to find some full songs - that voice!
Thank you Kelly.
One of the finest Valjeans, and Russell Crowe is great here! Love the shooting style, close-up intensity showing how much you both mean it, sends chills to us. Can't wait to see you onstage Jeff, and I also wish to see you as the Phantom!
Hi Sulwyn. Thanks for your compliment. Hopefully things will start to change for everyone in the music industry, as to The Phantom of The Opera, only if they want an old guy like me.
@@JeffLeyton Why not? It would increase the creep factor!
Hell, can't you guys just hug it out ?
Wow this is INTENSE
Jeff Leyton is an amazing singer too !!
Love so much
Russel Crowe is ready for a Orsen Welles bio pic
I've watched this many times now. Still my hair stands up. These two are more than brilliant.
Jeff Layton from Scotland and Russell Crowe from Australia doing the famous scene between Javert and Veljean.
I never noticed Russel Crowes bass/low end
Thank you so much for putting this video together. I wished I had found it earlier. Love to see more of these two singing together
They are to be congratulated. Beautiful music, it gets chills! Hugs from Brazil, we love you !!
I can't believe you're the guy who absolutely knocks you back in your seat with his voice in the 17 Valjeans despite probably the least words. Quality over quantity, as they say. And Russell Crowe from the movie, whose more sympathetic, softer take on Javert reminds me of Charles Laughton's great performance in the 1935 film. What a crossover! It's refreshing to hear a different take on this song pulled off so well.
Russell Crowe definitely improved here. Rooting for him!
Brilliant!
There are different kinds of singing and everyone has different kinds of doing singing. That is different shapes of art. Russell does very well despite he is not a musical actor.
Jeff from Ireland and Russell Crowe from Oz doing the classic Valjean and Javert song awesome.
The movie Javert and theatre Valjean in one video! This is simply amazing!
How did you manage to have Russell Crowe sing with you on this iconic song?
Wow. A new favourite Jean Valjean
Thank you so much for your compliments.
in do you hear the people sung by 17 valjeans from different countries you were absolutely the highlight of the video, and you are still a great singer
Thank you Isabelle.
@@JeffLeyton OMG U REPLIED
I HAVE CHILLS
Thanks Stef.
Bloody brilliant
They look.. ancient.. I never knew they were this old-
Amazing voices though
Timeless!
AAAAAAHHHH!!! Both of you still got it!!!
I love Jeff's rich voice !
Hi Jeff, I saw you as Valjean in London 1993. I've seen a lot of Valjeans since but none better.
Both of you... Amazing
beautiful voices!
Crowe wasn’t the best Javert, but imo he really nailed this song.
Two incredibles performarcers
What a beautiful tone of voice!
this a collaboration that had to happen
flawless
Great craic thanks.
You may have aged Sir, but it has only made your voice have an even greater emotional impact, thank you, and I hope that you are well in these times.
That’s very nice of you Adrian. A singer is like a book, we all interpret it in our mind because it’s so descriptive, I try to do the same thing but with the voice. Stay well and safe. Jeff.
russell saying “there is no place for you to hide” made me think that javert was possessed by a devil, aside from that nice work both of you
The best version in the world
Wouhaaaa... Amazing !
Russell Crowe #idoleforever
Irresistible Outstanding!
This is really excellent!!
This video cleared my skin, watered my crops, and raised my credit score
Absolutely EPIC!! Wow!
Oh my gosh, you two are incredible-as a fan from waaay back in the 80’s…Mr Leyton and Mr Crowe, this is SPECIAL.
Thanks Karen. Les Misérables has a huge fan base, I’m one of the old Valjeans from way back, not many remember me from those days. Hugs
@@JeffLeyton And a huge hug right back! It’s amazing being on the Les Miserables journey from when it was just a baby masterpiece! 😉❤️
Fantastic work by the 3 of them.
Magica interpretazione .....spettacolari ....
Wuuuuut!!! EPIC! Great job, Jeff, please do sine more. Loved the " there is No place for you to hide" 😲
Holy shit this is just goosebumps.
this gave me goosebumps, BEAUTIFUL! Hope the Macbook is serving you well :-)
Amazing !! Well done to all concerned . Delighted for you Jeff Leyton and Russel Crowe thank you 🇮🇪
Love this song in particular, and after hearing several versions I must say I like this one the best. Thank you for sharing this.
Голос у мистера Кроу с годами становится лучше и лучше.) Приятно слушать!
I like it, very much
GREAT!!! Make something with Philip Quast, it would be awesome like this!!!!
Every time I listen the power of their voices is mesmerising beautiful 😍
1:49 Congratulations Mr Crowe you are now a meme 👏😀
Wowowowowowowow. This Covid/Zoom perspective is really fresh. All of you guys did an outstanding job on this.
Cheers.
Absolutely Superb Wonderful Voices 👏👏👏👏👏🌹🌹
Thank you Ann. 🙏
@@JeffLeyton you're very welcome
I don't understand who criticizes Russell Crowe as Javert. He's a great actor and has an excellent voice. The character's rigidity fits perfectly with Russell Crowe's acting and singing. As much as he didn't make a Javert like the unsurpassed Philip Quast, Crowe also deserves his credit.
What's more, his interaction with Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) did the job justice.
I am always touched by this song in Russell's voice. He always manages to bring a depth and raw gravity consistent with the plot of the story.
They didn't sing the right notes in the movie.
I completely agree, his voice fits the character. It has a completely different tone then the rest. I think it’s because he doesn’t really have vibrato but it works for his character, a much more rigid character as you said. Not your typical musical/Broadway voice but it works. As far as Leyton, no comment. His rendition of Bring Him Home gives me chills every time. I see why he is renowned as one of the best Jean Valjeans in the world haha
映画ではカットされてる部分まで入っていて、やっとラッセルさんのお声でも聴けました♡ Jeffさんもすごく素敵なバルジャンで、ますますレミゼが好きになりました。
Dangg soooo gooood
wow... that's gorgeous!! 😎👍
Brillant, absolutely brillant. I got goosebumps. It would ne great, if you would present this live on stage together at some point. Bug hugs from germany and stay save. ❤
The Confrontation that make the rest of us better people 💖
Okay, I listened to this again. You guys are great together! Your interaction is giving me chills. I'm now a fan of this version.
Your welcome Nick.
This is amazing from both of you! People criticise Russell Crowe's performance in the movie and I used to think that way too, but after watching a video of him singing The Confrontation in a bar and now listening to him in this video makes me think whether they could have chosen a better take for the movie version - he's absolutely great here!
Blame the director of the movie. He did that movie in an awful way for actors, live sound , long takes, padded settings, barely moving to not make noise, complete silence... each and every one of the actors involved would've make way better performances if it was shot in a normal way.
Saw this in a Facebook group a couple of days ago. My favourite rendition of this song by far!!! Bravo sirs 🎉🎉🎉
It's still my #1 favorite...
oh my goood
The link for this was in the paper Jeff. Superb
Jim Sheridan's brilliant idea!🤩

Brilliantly done!
This is without doubt the best Confrontation Duet 👏👏
Mr. Crowe has a beautiful voice and is a wonderful actor.
You guys sound fantastic!
Chills and goosebumps indeed! Well done, gentlemen! =)
This is real life Valjean and Javert somehow captured in modern world camrea
I felt every second of that every word hits you deep and just wow!
The 17 Valjeans performance introduced me to your singing. You have an amazing gift, thank you for sharing it with us.
Love it!!! Of course after Russell tweet I need to be here ❤️ (Fantastici both)!!!
Omg my son & I were listening to this the other day, he was in a community theatre Production & I saw it 4 times 😁 This is my favourite track, then Red & Black 🙏❤
Red & black leading into, do you hear the people sing, is one of the most uplifting rousing songs in Les Misérables. The 17 international Jean Valjeans, at the 10th anniversary at the Royal Albert Hall, was such a climax to the ending of the concert version, that it had the audience on their feet for almost 10 minutes. I hope you Susan and your son, continue to enjoy and support theatre. Thanks, Jeff.
@@JeffLeyton Thnxyou so much for your reply, we can only imagine how exhilarating the atmosphere must have been during those 10 mins of ovation 🙏 Nothing on earth compares to the emotion Theatre can evoke.
My son has loved all his theatre Roles, Les Mis being his favourite, but what he really misses is the commradary & bonds formed during the whole process!
He has focused on film & voice work for the past 3 years, so his last Theatre role was as the Young Mr Kipps in The Woman in Black Production @Hota on the Gold Coast! Our dream is to see it performed in the UK in The Fortune Theatre 😊 Apparently tickets are going on sale again soon, so now we just need international flights to resume 🙏 As you would know it's one of the longest running shows on West End, such a triumph.
It's funny I can almost always identify a film Actor who has Theatre background training & stand by it being an amazing grounding for all actors.
Hopefully we will have the opportunity to see you live on stage in the future also 🧡 and will definitely support Theatre forever!
Susan & David Xx
