- The Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan has died aged 65, after a lengthy illness.
The singer-songwriter’s hits include Christmas classic Fairytale of New York, and A Pair of Brown Eyes.
He fronted the Irish punk band until their break-up in 2014.
A statement from MacGowan's spokesperson confirmed he "died peacefully at 3.30am this morning (30 November) with his wife and sister by his side".
MacGowan had recently been hospitalised after being diagnosed with encephalitis, and also had well-documented problems with drugs and alcohol.

Very sad to hear the news that Shane McGowan has died. He was a lyrical genius …with songs about chancers, drinkers, lovers, poets and scoundrels. He invented a new style of music that combined punk attitude with traditional Irish rhythms. RIP.

Been a fan for the start, fantastic lyrics and so many great song's, may be singing with kirsty at Xmas.i work in London many years ago with load of Irish and we had sing a long to Shane's song's even stand on London Bridge ,god bless him and his family ❤❤
The first time I saw him and The Pogues I was 23 in London, Uk, 1985. It would be 1 of 4 times. I was lucky to see him preform with Nick Cave in 1992, for a fundraiser. The news of his passing has gutted me.
His Christmas song ia probably one of the only ones that doesn't drive me mental and want to destroy the music source when they start polluting the airways in November. Fairytale of New York is a great song. RIP Another day of sad news .
