Blizzard's Cursed Masterpiece: The Story of Overwatch

- Overwatch was supposed to save Blizzard. Instead, it was the beginning of the end for one of the most beloved game developers in the world.
Between a broken game, a waning player base and enormous controversy, it seemed like there was no hope left for Overwatch.
And yet, Blizzard got one last chance to make it right.

Overwatch at its core is undeniably a fun game, the problem is Blizzard is always making poor decisions when balancing. Playing OW is like eating the best tasting ice cream and every other bite you get a piece of soggy bread.
this game is a perfect example of wasted potentials
i was hopeful with OW2, but them letting roadhog run rampant with little to no communication until like 3 weeks before the update, has me worried for the future
@@theonenonly2060 i just dont get it, sure they xould not fix him.but theb just diable him in comp.
Balancing in Overwatch is probably one of the hardest games to ever balance properly, which is understandable.
The problem is lack of content, rewards, progression and incentives. Have non of those with improper balance is disastrous. Which is the state of Overwatch for the past three years but made worse with Overwatch 2.
@@theonenonly2060 Hog is nerfed to the ground
Hearing "The world could always use more heroes", always makes me tear up. Cheap shot Liz.
Dude, the final cut to Tracers most famous line... Dont do this to us :( : (
i teared up. that game had so much potential i loved the characters its sad
To be fair, the buildup was a bit unenthusiastic and the delivery could've used a bit more oomph. Great idea, mid execution.
2016-2018 was truly the magical years of Overwatch, the game was at its peak that time. Then Brig came out and on top with slow balancing, it fell off. Before the game felt like a hero shooter as it plays the best that way but with Brig, she made the game more moba which didn’t fit right for Overwatch. It doesn’t help that they decided to announce OW2 and it fell off further.
3+ years from that and we have OW2 launch…PvP only though. The game did had an exciting launch at first but it fell off fast. There were many things that changes and some were missing. Overtime it’s clear that the game was not made for original OW players which to me is frustrating and feeling betrayed.
As for esports, it felt forced and too fast. They didn’t let grassroots export grow and Blizzard had full control over the esports scene. Never thought I seen the Overwatch franchise mismanaged so badly, all thanks to Acti-Blizz.
Edit: I still think the game still has room to make a come back. Only time will tell. I may not be playing the game as much as before but I still love the franchise since OW1 open beta times.
Not the first time, look at Starcraft 2 epsorts, overmanaged the scene to death
Lol in 2017 and 2018 they were saying it’s baaaad
For the first few of years of Overwatch I was absolutely IN LOVE! I completely dropped playing CS and TF2, games which I had been die hard on for years for this new game with amazing gameplay elements, a spectacular cast of characters and abilities, and some of greatest story telling and lore that I have ever seen. I was actually moved to tears by some of the cinematics that Blizzard produced, Dragons and Honor and Glory specifically. I remember working long hours at a shit job and counting the minutes until I could get back home and jump back into a game with the characters that I fell in love with and the friends that I had made while playing it. It is so sad to see what has become of the game we all grew to love so much. This may be one of the biggest falls from grace that the gaming industry has ever seen.
Overwatch 2 Is just as fun, but mostly for new players
for grassroots esports part... i distinctly remember they banned cash prizes for private tournaments for fear of competition to OWL.
My favorite game of all time. There’s nothing like it. The adrenaline from those long sustained fights with both teams battling on the cart over that last inch. I’ll never get enough of it. I’ve played damn near every day since the game launched in 2016 and I’ll continue to play until Blizzard shuts the servers down.
Me too, I get a bunch of toxic players, but I let it go and keep play the game.

OW was the first game in a long time that got me excited to play games on a regular basis, to this day it'll always hold a special place in my heart.
I discovered this game when my dad saw a video of the 2016 World Cup and bought it for our shitty Dell laptop. Because it was the only computer in our house capable of running an FPS game at the time, my sister and I shared an account and computer. We loved the game so much that we got another computer to play together, and even though we stopped playing together and took long breaks, we always came back. A year or two ago, I rediscovered the game, and even though it was nothing like before, I still loved it. After never being able to get past sliver as a kid, I almost managed to hit plat with my friends and while it's not at all impressive, it was enough. Even though I'm no longer a huge fan of Overwatch, it will always be my first and favorite pvp game of all time.

I think it’s extremely based that the minimum salary was 50 K, and I deeply appreciate what the Man said about respecting these people as top-tier athlete, who are singular and their talents, and deserve to be compensated
And then they added the 30 day contract, lol
it still is but some players just arent being paid by their orgs or getting kicked after 30 days lol
that was just the time period where there were plenty of investors who were pro athletes justifying esports to reporters and such
But the OWL Is not getting this kind of money. Do basically thé Blizzard And sponzors donate thé money to thé players without Chance of seeing them again
It’s not about deserving, it’s about the money the athletes bring in. That’s why the female sports leagues get so much less. No one is going to a WNBA game.
blizzard is really genius in making the cinematic for the characters before launching the game. it tells story about the characters in storyless game. it make people attached to the characters.
Only people who are easily manipulated.
You say that overwatch's downfall was it's failure to listen to the community. And then you actually listen to the community and realize the only way blizzard could make them happy is by removing all forms of healing, shields and armor from the game or at least making them so useless that it would just turn overwatch into a half baked call of duty.
I may not play OW anymore, but it will always hold a special place in my heart. The game and the story helped get through some rough times, giving me a place to escape to and play with friends when we'd come home from deployments or be away from our families.
The fact that this video outlined the downfall of the game so accurately is amazing brig, no hot fixes, double shield, no new content. It’s crazy how they screwed this up
Despite all ups and downs, Overwatch will always be my favorite game. No single video game ever, no single gaming events ever had me feel excited and hyped like Overwatch. Nothing was more than Jeff Kaplan on Blizzcon stage announcing new Overwatch content. Nothing gives me more adrenaline rush than diving into enemy team with nano-boost on overtime. Nothing ever. The memories and feelings will always keep Overwatch as my favorite. Always..
Never played overwatch but seeing a community so passionate about their game despite its flaws always make me shed a tear. been reading some of the comments and u guys are awesome y'all deserve better for sticking to this game all these years. its sad that blizzard never lived up to their promise but lets hope for the best.
Honestly, OW2 season 3 is the best it has been in 6 years
There are a couple of bugbears, but they are not too bad
Hopefully season 4 come April will keep on pushing forward, and the new support isn't too busted
What killed Overwatch:
1. Brigitte
2. The switch to a hard 2-2-2
3. Blizzard trying to fix in game toxicity instead of balancing the game
To this day the core heroes that Blizzard launched the game with still seem to be the most fun
More vids like this.
It is well paced and it would be cool to see a series on the Phase Change in gaming.
This is what I call the shift from online multiplayer to free to play games as services games that currently dominate the online gaming world.
1998 wasn’t the last IP before they created Overwatch. Hearthstone was 2014 and Heroes of the Stone was 2015. Overwatch released 2016.
Still one of my favorite games of all time and gave me another chance to prove myself in this world. I am now a SMM for a semi pro team, made so many friends through this game, and play this game competitively and it's been such an amazing ride and I can't wait for the future.
3:35 "And StarCraft had all but collapsed as an eSport, taking it's large competitive community with it." It baffles me that people talk about StarCraft as a "ded game kekw" while it has between 1 and 2 million unique monthly users, a new patch, and the most competitive pro scene it has ever had. No thanks to Blizzard, even the new patch has been community driven. It baffles me that people talk about it as a "ded game kekw" when it has one of the most driven and passionate communities in going right up there with smash bros melee.
The story isn't over just yet.
You guys did a good job with this. Overall this was a very fair and accurate piece.
I do have one small grievance/inaccuracy to point out. You kept repeating that Blizz didn't listen to the community regarding Brig and GOATS, but they absolutely listened. Brig was nerfed, no exaggeration, at least a dozen times in the year or so following her release. They kept chipping and chipping away. First lowering the stun time on her bash, lowering the shield health, her health, making the HoT on her armor packs stop if the target reached full HP, changes to how armor works across the game, then getting rid of the shield bash stun altogether and reworking shield bash to be a slight mobility tool instead of a stun. (I don't remember the exact sequence of these changes but the point is they tried A LOT of things.) Not only that, but they were buffing DPS heroes the whole time. All of this was to try and kill GOATS without going with the nuclear option of Role Lock, but they eventually broke the glass and threw that switch to finally change the meta. So yes, it took a long time, but it's not accurate to say to say they weren't listening because it was super evident they were very concerned about GOATS the whole time.
I also think the impact of GOATS is pretty overrated in the popular imagination. During the GOATS meta, I was in Gold-ranked games, like the majority of players, and guess what? Didn't see a lot of GOATS. But every time you looked at Overwatch content online - omg! GOATS is destroying the game making it unplayable! When in reality, it was a plague on the competitive scene, yes, and I'm sure it was awful for streamers and youtubers at high ranks playing the same meta for 12 hours a day. But this tiny minority of highly-impacted players somehow became the voice of the whole community, and the rest of the community claimed "GOATS" was ruining the game if they got killed by a Brig or couldn't demech a Dva in their metal rank game.
The fact that I was still in plat during GOATS was so sad, it seemed like so much fun to play tbh. Though I can see how it can get boring after being meta for so long.
Exactly, that was an issue that they didnt mention, balance for casuals vs balance for Esports, people of low Elo dont play meta, they play what is more easy or fun for them, the best rankeds are in gold to diamond, people know the basics but arent obsessed over climbing
Dude this is completely my experience, right here. Maybe it means I'm trash at the game, yeah, I kinda am if I'm in like Platinum or whatever after the stupidly high play time I have lol. But the bizarre hatred toward this game online has always been so weird to me, I mean I get it now because of the Blizzard controversies, but this type of "game is bad because of balance" feels performative to me. Any time a particular new meta sets in, all of the Overwatch content creators start talking about how awful it is, and then you just kinda see the general population agree with them and shit on it. But the key here is what you said: the vast majority of this type of stuff is only a problem for high ranked and competitive players, and not the type of thing that would pose a threat to the 90 percent of people that are just kinda casually solo queueing, and especially not in quickplay. If anything, it can be argued that the developers pay too much attention to Overwatch league tournaments, a lot of characters that utilize some really good strategy in that just aren't ideal to pull off in solo queue or as an inexperienced player.
All the while during the end Team Fortress 2 players rose to record numbers in the past years with the same 9 classes. Blizzard should have took more notes..and be less toxic.
15:53 Let's be honest. We all hoped to see the "No" version :)
Feels bad to see such an optimistic ending. How innocent you all were.
How does this only have 92k views. Great work bringing all that stuff together!
i follow most of the content creators closely and they use a few of their clips out of context to help push the narrative of the video, it's a pretty surface level video, imo feels like an outsider view of someone looking into the overwatch rabbit hole rather than a take from someone who is in
Jeff: “at a certain point, I’m like, what the hell do you people want?”
That’s the summation of the problem. Players will complain about OW no matter what the devs do. Overwatch is the whipping boy of modern FPS, and there’s really no rationality behind it.
The closer you look at the criticisms, the more you realize that many of them contradict each other, and have almost nothing to do with whether the core gameplay is good or fun.
We raised OW to the level of a god, and like all gods created by man, it eventually became our scapegoat. OW is Elon musk.
Game never truly recovered after Brig was added, even though changes were neccessary to get rid of the dive meta.
Added brig to please the daughter's self-insert
moira, brig, mercy (the moth meta) every time the game broke was because blizzard was trying to apel to the no skill suport players
The huge glaring problem was that the dev focus too much on Esport scene than the causal players
what makes a game isnt the esport scene or how many players it has but the community that surrounds it
I remember 2016-18 even though I never really got into OW i couldn’t imagine a world with OW being the top game and the future of esports. Now it’s hard to imagine OW2 ever getting back to where OW was
I bet Riot's misson, vision for their company is "not to be Blizzard"
They try to, but they oddly fall in to the same trappings. Let's hope they don't abandon their mmo like blizzard did, and have their main cashcow rot away in the same time.

Overwatch 2 isn't exactly better. They literally gave up on OW1 to work on the imaginary PvE content and never addressed the issues. Even a simple rework of Orissa would have gone a long way to fix some of the issues OW1 had.
Love that SVB got to be in the video a few times. That dude really helped keep the community going with cool concepts that kept it fresh. I hope some people check him out after this video. :)
Well done video, really captures how fans geinuely feel about the game
I sitll think the biggest downfall was the OWL, due to how close it was released to the actual game release, grass roots tournaments couldn't flourish and stuff like Hero Bans or that kind of stuff might have been tested out at tournaments if the balance was ass, but alas Blizzard wanted to control the narrative of their competitive play and this is what we are left with.
Commenting before watching even a second and am gonna edit the comment later to see how right I am,
I love this game and still play it to this very day, I love its esport despite many things about the league and even worse the tier 2 scene sucking balls and I am very aware that this video will be mostly negative but if it isnt and if this is a positive or at the very least not a overly negative video I will be very pleased. That being said I am more than aware that there is a lot a lot a lot of shit to talk about
As promised here is my edit: THANK FUCKING GOD!!! man having watched this channel for so long and almost always skipping the videos about my favorite game knowing you're never gonna say something I or a lot of the rest of the community agrees with this makes me so happy. Not only is it somewhat optimistic but you included clips from overwatch streamers saying bad AND GOOD stuff about the game through out the year so thank you The Score for that THANK YOU
That last sentence brought a sudden tear to my eye..
Top notch documentary. Cheers for a wholistic view on Overwatch's journey and a brief trip down memory lane for a game we've all loved at some point.

13:57 sums up how it felt when role queue got added and goats ended
Im just going to say this as somebody who stopped playing Overwatch a long time ago. For me Overwatch was my first introduction to PvP content during its best era of 2016 and i will always appreciate it for what it was. Every game was refreshing, learning all of the new characters was interesting. I will say that it was the most fun I had ever had playing and learning a game and that holds true to this day.
Before talking about the bad stuff let me just say this. THE GAME HAD EVERYTHING.
Fun lore - check
Super fun characters - check
Super cool maps - check
Fun and balanced game play - check
HANDS DOWN THE BEST COSMETIC ITEMS - DOUBLE CHECK
The game felt as perfect as could be.
For me, the problems came first with Metas. I at the time was the epitome of a casual player, I hadnt even touched ranked, and yet by the one year mark I was starting to get bossed around (in casual preface) into playing meta characters and meta strats and the game started to become stale. I had to either play a character I didnt want, and not have a lot of fun and when we would lose I would get blamed for it because surprise surprise I wasnt good at my character, or I would stick to my guns and go with the character I wanted and just get harrassed for "throwing".
After this I dropped the game and didnt get back into it for a while. After a year I got back into it and immediately recognized another glaring issue with the game. Even after introducing new characters and stuff into it, it still felt very similar (this is coming from somebody that played at a mid - high silver) simply just spam shit at choke points and hope the people to not just commit suicide while trying to get play of the game. This sadly led to the game becoming super boring and tiring. This leads to the my biggest problem with the game.
Soon after I came back, I came to the final realization that led me to stop playing the game completely. Winning didnt feel as fun as how demoralizing it was to lose. There wasnt a quote on quote profit when it came to playing. Even if I felt getting better at the end the ultimate goal of winning wasnt satisfying anymore, whether it was because the game was losing its popularity and seemed to be dying, or because the meta was too gimmicky, or because of how sad of an excuse my teammates were, at the end every single time I won all I could utter was "finally..." when that happened I realized that this game simply was not for me and I changed immediately to another game (that was totally not the same hot pile of flaming garbage *cough* *cough* rainbow *cough* *cough* six *cough* *cough*)
Let me finish by saying this. Yes, I have tried out Overwatch 2 and Im just going to say that for me (let me say this again as to not get flamed. ME... My opinion) it just wasnt fun. Foe me, it had the same glaring issues that caused me to stop playing the game in the first place, just that instead of encounters lasting 1-2 minutes they now lasted 30 seconds or so. I played for a week and immediately let it go to rest again.
I was stuck in bronze over covid and it helped me through depression. I’ve never felt happy in my life when I went from bronze to silver. It’s the only game I come back to even if I want to cry and scream every time I play into an orisa

people... please stop saying this, and onlookers, know that 5v5 isn't universally liked by the community like this video insists -- in fact the majority of the game's current balance issues can probably be chalked up to the cognitive dissonance between heroes designed for 6v6 and the 5v5 game. a good portion of the playerbase, including myself, would rather have 6v6 back.
What is the song from 20:00 and out?
Overwatch has been the best gaming experience in my life
I think it's a bit much to say people were excited about the Overwatch League. There were prominent opponents to that direction from its inception. For example, Richard Lewis was outspoken at the beginning, saying it was going to fail because trying to astroturf a competitive scene has never happened and never will happen. Franchising is almost unique to NA and I think that's where most of the hype came from.
EU and Korea were not as hyped as they had never really seen anything like it and preferred their grassroots tournaments and teams. Something I was especially outraged over with franchising was the removal of Esports orgs as their orgs. I.e. Team Envy was no longer, envy, they were the Dallas Fuel. It was no longer Lunatic-Hai, it was Seoul Dynasty. Completely soulless and astroturfed organisations.
Combined with other decisions with the league which were mentioned. The Overwatch League was doomed to fail from the start.
people are wrong, goats was honestly pretty fun and required such precision teamwork and gamesense, but lasted too long. it was simply a balancing speed issue. 2-2-2, being unable to swap roles mid-game, long queue times impacted the game way more than goats. real players that played through the entire timeline will agree
ngl i used to play ow semi pro and scriming goats was probably my most enjoyable time i've had playing the game
i understand the damage it did but the strategy and teamplay behind it was insane
imo still the best game i've ever played
2:17 it’s really funny to see Genji being named Hanzo for Titan.
I think people underestimate how difficult it is to balance this kind of game, where there are so many variables and synergies to keep track of, it's near impossible to have every character share equal playtime. But at the same time, it's strange how they keep continuing to make the same mistakes they have for years. The balancing at the end of Overwatch 1 was actually showing rapid improvement, and it seemed like there was finally some understanding between players on multiple levels. Even the OWL had hero diversity with every team and map, and things were looking up. Then they launched Overwatch 2, and the impact one less tank had was astronomical to the game, and it seemed like this shift in meta was unforeseen by blizzard. As it is right now, there are countless heroes that are nearly impossible to play, or are inferior choices to others in nearly every way. Support is a unrewarding and near unplayable role, and the OWL showed us that once again, there is one dominating team comp for every map, for every team, and for every scenario. I still love Overwatch and its characters, but with the new monetization system and familiar balancing challenges, I feel an all too familiar feeling of tiredness. Fun to play sometimes, but impossible to enjoy after an hour or two.
Well this video was made under a more positive context then other overwatch videos on this channel, some of the content is just misinformation. I've been top ranked for 5 years now and the content creators that everyone looks to for opinions are often just going with the flow. Double shield wasn't a meta that was often run in comp. At it's peak it was maybe run 60% of the time. The thing that made ranked really painful was just griefers and throwers and people who didn't care just like any competitive game. People not playing meta in top ten games is throwing, and so to me the most frustarating thing was never playing meta, it was people who would pick trash heroes like moira hog and essentially grief in pro pubs. As a final note, these content creators are not good at the game mechanically, yet they have a huge following. An amazing overwatch league player like vigilante on the atlanta reign streams to like 20 people. The opinions you should be looking at if you want a genuine take on something, is not content creators who just go with the flow and say what people want to hear, but it's pro players who are 1000 times better and who truly know what they are talking about.
It's a tf2 ripoff mashed together from the assets of a failed attempt to make a completely different type of game. If this didn't have blizzard's name on it nobody would think of it as a masterpiece, just a confused clone.
"Watered down tf2" would be a better way of describing it.
Blizzard really did strike gold with Overwatch, but after season 4-5 it felt like they didn't know where to go. Balancing became slow and Blizzard's decisions became odd. Eventually the wind left the sails and the game became stagnant.
I hope blizzard communicates more with the fans. It seems like theyre catering more toward newer audiences rather than old players. (Events reward old skins rather than new ones etc.)
I grinded from bronze to GM over 3 years, the game that put me into GM (Back in goats meta) was my last. I had hated the game for so long, but my ego needed to hit GM. I saw my RR go up, the rank change, then uninstalled. Never looked back.
With the combined effort of junkerz, R-34 and blizzard ...
You have a sore hand.
Imo ow is a blast for the average player. Quick play, arcade, and customs are super fun specially with friends. Plus, comp in lower elo (im gold myself) is nice. You are not forced to always play meta heroes.
I never had so much fun playing a game like Overwatch in 2017
lets all be honest. the only reason overwatch lasted as long as it did was because of the R34 videos
Come to think of it, Overwatch is such a great game. Finally a game where there's no story mode but the lore is ACTUALLY interesting. The characters are appealing. Like for real, I can't think about a single multiplayer game that I've played while enjoying the characters and getting attached to them. The questions that the game raises about the future of society, AI, among others are truly engaging. The concept of the gameplay is (or rather was) FUN. I spent so many hours playing Overwatch, it's the game I played the most by far.
It is crazy to me that whenever I come back to play this, I'm not having fun. I don't know what killed it for me exactly. I really explain why I could play this game for hours back then and now I just can't anymore. I don't know what has disappeared. But I will always cherish all the great memories I made while playing. Thank you Overwatch.
League did the no story mode great lore first
@@milanesadearsenico Yep and they actually continue it... They have great comics, insanely good cinematics, stories and tons more. Overwatch did comics for a bit and had a few great cinematics, but they quickly just fell off and left them behind. Overwatch story hasn't moved forward in a very long time.
@@JonEffinZoidberg I don't agree, the story has been moving. Just look at some of the interactions between heroes in game. Or look at ramattra, the latest addition to the roster. In my opinion, he is the most interesting character lore-wise since sigma. And I do agree some of the recent overwatch cinematics arent that great, take junker queen for example, that was trash. But kiriko's cinematic was honestly just so good.
Clearly you haven’t played tf2 for an extended period of time…
The movement and characters are far superior in tf2 lol

Overwatch 2 is without a doubt a better game than where Overwatch 1 left off. Is 2 as good as 1 was during its prime? I don't think so. But 2's a hell of a lot better than 1 was for the last few years of its life. Balance issues are inescapable in Overwatch at this point, but I think the overall quality of the game and enjoyment will stand above those issues. I'm hoping the game can return to form and its former popularity, but I doubt that. Still, I'll be playing almost every night with the boys, tilting and having fun.
Early Overwatch holds a lot of nostalgia for me. I can still remember the scent of my dad's office from when I first started playing the Beta. I don't think Brig killed the magic of Overwatch, but I think she's what made me realize something was wrong, and it was all down hill from there. I'll always miss the excitement that game gave me.
I think you are mistaken saying that Blizzard pioneered rts games - Westwood Studios did with C&C and Dune
Thought there would be more on how overmatch 2 has landed, the rest of the story is well documented over the years even for those of us that don’t play it. The vibe I’ve gotten is that OW2 hasn’t really done much so would have been good to get more around OW2 in this.
They failed to highlight when the game was good, only showing brig and small changes which were integral to the health of the game (like no 6 of the same hero or 2-2-2)
I heard Seagull's voice and got immediately transported to a much better time and place
With the extremely large amount of communication that's been happening the past few days regarding s3 and onwards, I'm really, REALLY hoping blizzard is FINALLY fulfilling their promise of LISTENING to the community and are actually going to go in the right direction with balance. Right now their top priority needs to be the strength of damage boost, and the issues that arise with one shot heroes. If they can figure out even one of the two of those soon that will be MASSIVE for making the game so much more fun and appealing to a wider audience
Brig made me quit OW for 2 years, blizzard made me quit OW2 for good.
I tried to come back and play overwatch 2, but with the new 5v5 and valorant feeling so much better, I couldn't find myself investing as much time as I did years ago.
ngl i wasnt expecting this vid to end on a bit of a brighter note, but yknow what, im glad it did
i rly loved Overwatch on launch. made some good friends with it too.
it probably wont reach the same love it had 2016 - 2018, but i genuinely hope it continues to get fans new and old at it again.
The rule 34 is the only thing carrying Overwatch these days.
Overwatch may be dead... but Overwatch porn is eternal... hahaha...
Waiting for "Abandoned by Valve: The Story of Team Fortress 2"
I really hope they could rehash their DOTA 2 story here as well, that game is never going to gather more new players there unless Valve made any changes to its system and have a quality of life improvements. Until then, that game and its playerbase along with CS:GO and TF2 is on the brink of death.
the game is actually pretty good right now imo, the only thing that's lacking is acccess to cosmetics through gameplay. Blizzard are actually making me miss the lootbox system. I know that this happened because the game went freet to play, but still, this makes OW considerably less worthwhile
Overwatch 1 community: THIS GAME ISNT GETTING ENOUGH NEW CONTENT!!!
Overwatch 2 community: THIS GAME’S NEW CONTENT IS BROKEN!!!
and it’s true
Having played Overwatch quite religiously from 2016 to this day I can tell it's easily the best game there is in my opinion. The main issue for me is that I can't watch much Overwatch content without an urge to play it myself.. and I'd love to see Arcane/Overwatch crossover characters somehow.
The only thing that keeps this game alive is the hype for the PvE. If Overwatch fails on that, there will be no more Overwatch.
Blizzard is a company, and one of the main goals of any company is to make make money. But when greed exceeds the quality it may offer, there wont be anyone there to support it.
I do really hope that the deal with Microsoft buying Blizzard will go through and we start to see the change we always wanted.
It’s the first FPS I just fell in love with and I never wanted to fall out of love but they made it so hard at times. I’m so hopeful that this is the first step to redemption for it cause I love the universe so much and it deserves better than the game has delivered at times.
Me: a casual player having fun, picking any hero I want
I remember a lot of years ago that ChipsA said that there was nothing like OW, like if every player is making concious deccisions in their picks and everyone plays their role, its one of the most fun games ever, but thats experience is very limited, you have to get a team and play scrims, making tournaments with people that you know will play decent and have good conection, i have played other shooters and nothing comes close to an excellent OW ranked, its like a good futbol match, even the team who lost doesnt feel that bad bcs it was such an awesome match, but balancing is hell, Seagull said it, you balance the maps or the heroes (CSGO or LoL), but if you have to balance both is impossible
That's what you got wrong. GOATS was the best meta. The best mirror match. It requires coordination and planning on top of mechanic that comes from experience. Role queue was a good decision but it made meta much worse.
Im 100% sure the downfall was largely because the tournament spectating was not fun. The odd colors like white and grey or yellow as a highlight just made the game hard to look at. It was a mess and still is. And when you don't want to watch the game, there is no viewership and no reason to try to better the game.
Overwatch was the first game I actually poured hours into everyday, ive stuck with it through even the darkest times, if I could go back as blizzard, I wouldn't have announced overwatch 2 so early
As a 60-year-old, this is the only online game I've played almost every day since launch. I'm addicted. I've tried the others, but nothing holds a candle to OW. I don't have to have the reflexes of a teenager to have an impact on gameplay.
- Unbalance
- Blizzard did the American Style Sport tournament . They Change Esport team names to City names .
- Blizzards love big Pauldron and Big Exosuit 😂
Blizzard would usually make a knee jerk reaction patch that made things a lot worse but would never admit that their patch was bad so would create new different patches to counter the original patch which caused more problems. It became a game whose foundation was now built upon layers and layers of terrible ideas. Then even when they changed the game to 2,2,2 they never went back and altered the heroes that they changed to counter 222, and now all sense of balance was out the window.
I've never seen a developer this indept at balancing a game in my entire life
This was a video I was waiting for. The game that made one of the biggest splashes in the gaming industry to where we are today.
A very wild story.
This game.... What do I even say about this game. This game has really been THE game I play for almost 6 years now, and it just keeps going. I don't like Overwatch 2, I wanted to quit, but I also want to keep playing in hopes Blizzard gets it together. Jeff did a lot for us and Aaron has massive shoes to fill. 5v5 was the wrong step in the right direction, it just needed to be done better. I feel like Overwatch 2 is salvageable if Blizzard stops with the dollar bills and starts with the love and care they once had.
Overwatch Fans: "I hate this game. It's so unbalanced!"
Marvel vs. Capcom Fans: "What's balance?"
Coming from csgo community, I gotta say love Overwatch 2 it’s so fresh. Todays youth just complains to much on the games
Great video, I feel like more was needed about why people love the game so much... it is basically one of a kind. Moba meets fps and for some that was the combination you don't find in any other game (I didnt play TF2)
I have almost 2 thousand hours of TF2 and I can say, both games are one of a kind, OW won my heart and I just hit a thousand hours on it too
17:28 ow commentators are so gas lmao.better than the sports commentators in my country
Man you guyssssss😭, amazing effort I barley like OW and my heart was in this.
Anybody remember the widow player on overwatch player that completely dominated on Rialto ? And I mean like got 10 plus headshots and was a huge moment (2021-2022)
I have over 1500 hours with OW1 but was finally able to quit the love/hate game after OW2, it just doesn't feel the same anymore
Well as a new ow2 I am loving this game...i believe you are/were really skilled in this game if you actually had 1500 hours...hey if you are free can you share me some tips to improve..we can talk on discord...my english is kinda bad but its understandable
@@RAADUMB I was average, I would go in and out of diamond rank in the old system each season. It's a team game so communicating is key and also being flexible with what heros are needed. If you solo queue your chances of winning are not so high compared to playing on a team
@@TexasBrown713 thank you , but my most serious issue is I suck at using hitscan dps's, how can I improve..
Brig was the beginning of the end of an era and Overwatch 2 was just a straight up bust
No matter how bad the balancing is or the lack of content is, no one can deny that the cinematic trailers are top fucking notch. I have teared up after every single one. Even if I don’t play as often as before I will always drop whatever I’m doing to watch a new cinematic. I love all the characters and their lore. Hoping they will make an official show or movie on it 🤞🏻
Even without Brig meta, OWL was doomed to fail. They veered away from what makes an esport unique, grass root culture. It just goes to show how disconnected the suits managing Blizzard was to the gaming community.
Starting the League as a franchise on the get go and trying to model it like traditional sports basically alienated possible new eyes. People that are hardcore esports fan will eventually fall in love with a team of their choice. It happens organically. What OWL did was forced and inorganic. Had they given the pro scene at least 2 years to ingrave on fabs and grow naturally then the league could have a far more stable and longer lifespan.
And one more thing that killed Overwatch was its watchability (or lack there of). For the casual gamer and people that are not into gaming, watching an Overwatch game was basically pointless. There was too much happening on the screen. It's hard to track players and have a sense what's about to happen and that's even with excellent commentating.
Basically Blizzard saw OWL as a multimillion dollar cash cow that can keep them fed for years. That is not what makes a great esport. Look at CS:GO, The FGC, Rocket League and Riot's esports scene. All started from humble janky beginnings but are now the greatest esports.
I have honestly hated the torturous emotional rollercoaster that has been Overwatch over the years. Being my favorite game, I obviously have hope that this game is salvageable. But it's Feburary 2023 and we still haven't seen anything on the teased PvE mode and on top of that the gun inspects they promised. The matchmaking, especially at higher levels of play, is absolutely abhorrent and feels terrible. They just recently promised new changes to the ranked system that are supposed to take effect in the next week. But with the patterns of promises from the Overwatch team in the past. I'm not sure how much longer I can hold hope for this game.
Bro I 150% forgot that xQc was once an esports professional. Seeing him walk out with Dallas Fuel I was like OH YEAH
