My biggest hair mistake was flat ironing my hair everyday. And i mean every single day in high school. I would touch up my ends every morning cause the straight look was definitely in. My mom warned me but of course i didn’t listen cause i didnt want puffy hair. My hair went from the middle of my back to my shoulders to my chin in months. Then i decided to go natural cause i was bald headed😂😩😩😩
Oh my hon :) I went natural in February 2008 after transitioning for months. My biggest mistake was wearing a wig daily for months without proper care underneath the wig. I recently talked about this in a video.
My first year natural was trial and error with so many errors - following someone else’s hair routine and expecting the same results, not moisturizing my hair when needed, following type 3 gurus when I’m type 4 and couldn’t understand why my hair looked different when I did the same thing. CRAZY stuff but thankfully I figured it out. Education and learning what your hair needs is the key to happy natural hair.
I was guilty of the pony holders with the metal, but no more. I sleep with satin pillowcases, because I have problems with bonnets, and scarves staying on my head.

I’m twelve and cut my hair in January due to having my hair flat-ironed. I begged my mom to get one because I was the only black girl in my class. I would over iron my hair and I thought that my curly- straight hair was a curl pattern. After cutting my hair its now in the awkward length stage, and before it was shoulder length. I’m lost about being natural.
1. using a sulfate free shampoo even while it was drying my hair out something bad. finally switched to sulfate shampoo and my hair is thriving. 2. not watering down my thicker products so my low porosity hair could absorb it better
None yet because I’m still transitioning and thank goodness I get to learn from RUclipsrs like you. Thank you!! For teaching us! Your nail color is life.
My first few years of being natural I use to straighten my hair every 2 weeks in the colder months. When I stopped doing that I finally was able to grow my hair to mid-back length.
After 3 years of growing my hair, I flat ironed my hair with a conditioner ( which i thought it’s was a heat protectant)😭 heat damage and I had to cut it all and star over, I’m 1year post bigchop 🤧
See I was just about to straighten my hair after a year of no heat but you know now I ain’t touching that shit I’m too scared lol my hairs mid back and healthy af😭😭 so sorry for u sis
My mistake is going to a traditional hair stylist that doesn't have natural hair clients. My other mistakes were not moisturizing enough and not applying products properly. Great video, Jaelen!
My biggest mistake was not getting my hair the moisture it needs I was listening to what other ppl said and my hair was DRY 😫 I didn’t even know I really had curls
I am a 3b/natural/ with dyed blonde hair past my shoulders. I am ova this blonde and love your red!!!! I need this hair to grow. thnx for sharing the amazing info~
Girl i agree 100% i had no clue what protein treatments were. But you live and you learn. I love protein treatments now, however, ive never straightened my hair or used heat, other than the cool air setting on a blow dryer.
Hey honey , do you cut your own ends? I used to always go get my ends cut but the last time I cut my ends , I did it myself because I feel like stylists cut too much off. Could you possible make a video & list the steps & methods of cutting your own ends?! ❤️ THANK YOU!
i used to straighten my hair every sunday 😬 straightened my hair for the first time in almost a year back in october for shits and giggles but i just bought a wig to satisfy that inner need for straight hair. but my curls are doing so well now 🥺💗
What cheap products are you talmbout👀? And my biggest hair mistake was listening to so many different RUclipsrs and thinking I could only do to my hair what they said.. and things they said were taboo I avoided like the plague! But I finally figured out what works for my hair and it’s beginning to flourish
For me my biggest mistake was keeping the damaged ends from the relaxers instead of cutting it off. I cut that ish off and my hair growth started going tf AWF!
1. My HAIRDRESSER; she did not know what to do with my fine, med density, low porosity hair. she was always telling me “you got white peoples hair” 🙄 fried tf outta my hair & would turn me around in her chair. She cut off 8 inches of my hair
Najha girl yes! Then she cuts my hair off the day before family pictures. Had me looking like a whole egg out here in these streets 😭 I cried my eyes out
Girl, I have been eight years natural an made mistakes in the past five years 😂 with heat damage an not deep conditioning in the past. Now my hair is really flourishing an healthy. I had a similar straightening schedule too in my past every wash day lol 😂 gosh I didn't do a big chop but I had to cut my hair. I learned alot from those past five years. This video was very helpful knowing my hair is finally at a good state an that my curls are popping now! 😁 This was an inspiring video. Thanks for letting us know what we should avoid doing to our hair.
Mine was trying to use the cheap products...... I have now switched over to Camille Rose for naturals and my hair loves it........I plan on doing a follow me with my hair journey soon......
The ponytail holders and flat ironing my hair was definitely it for me but I been keeping my hair in braids and protective styles for a couple years now and making sure its healthy and clean and sis my hair is Growing 😊😊😊
Im a dye-head. I used to dye my hair and then be lazy in my early 20’s.Now that I’m older I’m not so lazy and I don’t experiment with other people’s routines outside of techniques. It’s hard to keep up with washing and deep conditioning/protein treatments each week but my hair is flourishing now. Another mistake I did was not know my porosity I assumed I was low and would deep condition for hours and then wonder why it was breaking. I typically stick to the directions now and at best I may add a additional 10 mins but if I do more my hair is very mushy.
Thank you for giving out the site for the hair. I'm at that first where I have to stop going and getting it blow dry and flat iron. Just working on getting my curls back. Thanks for sharing
My hair is so undefined at the roots! The ends will curl if I brush through my hair with conditioner but the roots (or the top 3/4 of the strand) will not clump or curl for the life of me! I decided to bring my problems hair because I was hoping there were other (extremely) High porosity type 4 girls with tips. Thanks!
I did it as well! Bleached my hair platinum blonde with boxed dye and splat lighten bleach and to add a cherry on top I dye it pink, purple, blue and green over and over again. I super glad that I still have hair on my head
In all honesty this week was my since I've been natural (3yrs) wore my hair curly (1st attempt at a wash n go) and everyone loved it but me. I salute you curly girls y'all the real MVP's. I'm a naturally straight kind of girl
So I just watched like 8 of your videos love your content for a guy who struggles with even keeping his hair properly moisturized your convey your content in ways that I can grasp so thank you these videos are awesome
I get so confused when I keep hearing that it is bad for you to get your hair straightened often... it’s all about making sure your hair is protected. I get my hair straightened every 3 weeks and it’s growing healthy WITHOUT any heat damage. My hair reverts back with no problem. As long as you’re properly taking care your the hair by moisturizing & deep conditioning, regardless if it’s curly or straight, it will grow healthy. I have 4c texture hair btw.
One mistake that I still do is touching my hair a LOT. Specially the ends. I used to do it when I had it relaxed and now I do it to my transitioning hair because I had my hair relaxed when I was very little and didn’t know what my texture was like so this is new to me and I just keep touching it because it’s different... i think it’s one of the reasons I have so many split ends and fairy knots. idk how to stop I think it has a lot to do with anxiety but I’m trying to stop 😭
My biggest mistake that I still make is not sleeping with a bonnet I was experiencing some breakage in the back of my head and I had no idea why until this video Btw love your channel I'm am struggling to embrace my curls so thanks love you
Finding a moisturizing routine!!!!!! It’s so hard to genuinely moisturize my (naturally) dry hair. Like some products I have been trying make it more “sticky” than moisturized if that makes sense! Being with stylists (including my mom) who doesn’t know my type of hair and just does the routines they do on everybody. Wearing too much wigs and doing nothing to my hair underneath (very cringy right?)
can you please do a video on how you recovered from heat damage because im currently recovering from it right no but its just a spot on my left side of my hair with the damage please because I really need help
I get scissor happy I feel like that's the reason why my hair it's not where I feel like it should be. I got a trim my second year of being natural that was so bad that I literally damn near start it over somebody else did it for me. And I lied to lady who trim my hair this time around and she said I had done a really good job and I honestly in about 7 months but I told her having three. That showed me after her doing a thorough cut that I don't have to trim my hair as much.
1. At night, I didn’t protect my hair at all in high school. Just slept on it every. single. night. 2. Every morning it would be matted of course, so I would just re-do my entire styling process (wet my hair, put in hair cream and gel, and LEAVE the house with WET hair). I’m pretty sure I ended up having moisture overload for a while. But that was years ago and my hair is flourishing now. 💪🏾
New subby!! I love your personality & we have the same texture hair. It's so hard to find someone on here with the same hair texture. Most of them either have fine hair or very kinky hair. With that being said it's been hard trying to moisturize my hair properly. So thank you so much for your channel 🙌🏾😍
When I was little my mom always had my hair in braids I have a picture of me as a 3 year old with straight permed hair the day I was gonna get braids after taking mine out 3-7 days ago my mom combed my hair out and she didn't section she didnt wet it she didn't do anything just stuck a comb into my hair and pulled as hard as she could while I screamed smh. ....
1.) Trimming my hair too often (it’s an obsession😫). 2.) Shampooing too often, I get product build up really easily (please recommend products that don’t build up!)
I feel so green, tell me about the pantyhose ponytail holder please. I've read all the comments and I have literally made every mistake listed. I'm on the healthy hair track now though thanks in great part to you and a few other influencers.
I have low porosity/medium 3c hair I followed everyone i focused on what everyone else had all the expensive high quality products just because they had long shiny bouncy curls so i thought thats exactly what i needed. Honestly it just caused me more bad than good. Now i know *to* *stop* *following* *the* *crowd*
Everything! Just everything I made a mistake and I still feel like my hair is just a mess. I don’t know what to do at this point. I will keep trying though.
I did EVERYTHING wrong but my hair still grew it just kept breaking. I gave up the hairdresser cuz it was hatin going on. Im natural and start the satin pillowcases now i love my hair.
Whew I made so many mistakes in the beginning because I didn’t know what to do. I stayed away from silicones and sulfates. I tried to make my own products. Tried to keep up with bloggers buying all these products they got for free...spent wayy too much. I used to style my hair too much. I used to wash my hair too much. Tried too many DIY hair masks 😖. Followed too many type 2 -3 youtubers wondering why my hair “didn’t do what theirs did” .Rough combing and brushing. Over picking with the hair pick. Caring too much what people thought of my TWA. Accepting that my hair is what it is whether it’s too kinky...unmanageable....too short...annoying to detangle at times, I’ve just learned to accept it cause it’s mine. I’ve been natural for years now. And I’m sure I’ll continue to make more mistakes but meh....just hair. And there’s always a scarf or hat to wear on those weeks of neglect lol.

1. using a sulfate free shampoo even while it was drying my hair out something bad. finally switched to sulfate shampoo and my hair is thriving.
2. not watering down my thicker products so my low porosity hair could absorb it better
Your sense of humor is giving me life!!! Great video
None yet because I’m still transitioning and thank goodness I get to learn from RUclipsrs like you. Thank you!! For teaching us! Your nail color is life.
Just recently passed the one year mark of no heat! YAY! I'm guilty of not deep conditioning and not moisturizing consistently.
I trim my hair too much too
Not making my own oil, deep conditioners, and protein treatments as well as aloe Vera. I tried store ones but they never work like when I make my own
My first few years of being natural I use to straighten my hair every 2 weeks in the colder months.
Oh nooo sis!! 😔
NaturalReign 🤧
See I was just about to straighten my hair after a year of no heat but you know now I ain’t touching that shit I’m too scared lol my hairs mid back and healthy af😭😭 so sorry for u sis
Wxvyy_L0wkey yes boo! I cried so hard, I will never strengthen my hair again
Never
My mistake is going to a traditional hair stylist that doesn't have natural hair clients. My other mistakes were not moisturizing enough and not applying products properly. Great video, Jaelen!
How do you keep it so healthy despite all the dyeing?
My biggest mistake was not getting my hair the moisture it needs I was listening to what other ppl said and my hair was DRY 😫 I didn’t even know I really had curls
Not clarifying my hair enough, once I learned about clarifying shampoo and bentonite clay my hair would be refreshed after getting the buildup off
I am a 3b/natural/ with dyed blonde hair past my shoulders.
This video was very, very helpful...One of the best I've seen! Thank you for sharing!!! Please continue to educate us😊
Hey honey , do you cut your own ends? I used to always go get my ends cut but the last time I cut my ends , I did it myself because I feel like stylists cut too much off. Could you possible make a video & list the steps & methods of cutting your own ends?! ❤️ THANK YOU!
i used to straighten my hair every sunday 😬 straightened my hair for the first time in almost a year back in october for shits and giggles but i just bought a wig to satisfy that inner need for straight hair. but my curls are doing so well now 🥺💗
i love how shes so real
Gurl yaaasss pantyhose is life! I thought I was the only one with that quirk!
Every natural needs this video I swear!
I think we all make these common mistakes when we are uneducated about our hair
Your hair is absolutely gorgeous 🤩. GOALS. Thank you for your information beautiful.
What cheap products are you talmbout👀? And my biggest hair mistake was listening to so many different RUclipsrs and thinking I could only do to my hair what they said.. and things they said were taboo I avoided like the plague! But I finally figured out what works for my hair and it’s beginning to flourish
For me personally, I had to let Cantù and ecostyler gel go.
ReignGang!!🙋🏾♀️❤ Still learning and I'm trying to not play in my hair.🙈
Hey boo! I struggle with this too! It’s a habit.
She cut off 8 inches of my hair
prettypea713 brings back memories ...😭 I’ll never let anyone flat iron my hair ever again
Najha girl yes! Then she cuts my hair off the day before family pictures. Had me looking like a whole egg out here in these streets 😭 I cried my eyes out
I hate how people will be mad rough with our hair and make it thin out then cut all of it off. So trash. Hair salons don’t be caring about our hair
Najha sure don’t! I wish I could post pictures in the comments cause girllllll I was a whole mess 😂
I have definitely been there
I needed to hear this cause I was about to go crazy on a new hair color 🤣
Girl, I have been eight years natural an made mistakes in the past five years 😂 with heat damage an not deep conditioning in the past. Now my hair is really flourishing an healthy. I had a similar straightening schedule too in my past every wash day lol 😂 gosh I didn't do a big chop but I had to cut my hair. I learned alot from those past five years. This video was very helpful knowing my hair is finally at a good state an that my curls are popping now! 😁 This was an inspiring video. Thanks for letting us know what we should avoid doing to our hair.
Your one of my favorite youtuber's and your also my inspiration
I’m so happy to help!! That’s why I’m here 🤗🤗
I originally watched your video about the hair stretching tool, if used over a period of time could it accelerate growth or alter the way hair falls?
Sleep without protection...lmao! Good one Jae :)
I used to use Cantu and all it did was dry out my hair and now that I know my porosity I know a little about my hair I am still learning
Though
Same…Cantù and shea moisture left my hair dry asf… I use Mielle products now
@@Calihon88 me and you both
One mistake that I still do is touching my hair a LOT.
You are so much fun to watch! But girl your hair is Everythingg
Thank you love! 💗💗
Girl everything you said about the straightening , I felt!
I found you two weeks ago and now I'm a subscriber. I love that you're true to yourself. Even my mom likes you. Thanks for the tips 💙💙
I loved this video a lot, your advice was on point and your jokes kept me laughing. I needed a laugh today. Keep being real, loving it all day long.
Thank you boo!! ❤️❤️
My biggest mistake that I still make is not sleeping with a bonnet I was experiencing some breakage in the back of my head and I had no idea why until this video
Btw love your channel I'm am struggling to embrace my curls so thanks love you
So how often do you wash your hair? I’m sorry, I’m new to your channel ☺️
Omggg, I wish you included pictures of everything!
Another high porosity RUclipsr now I have 4 to follow! Keep doing.ha thang👌🏾 cuz I need it😅
Jae could you do a history of your hair journey with pics as the years went by?
Shereese Blackman if I’m not mistaken she does have a video of this that she did a few months ago
@@j_janicee Oh really? My bad...thanks Joi'Andria, I'll do a search
She said " Sis if you don't do nothing else just moisturize me"!..so guilty of this.Mama i appreciate your honesty...those tips really helped!!!🥰
New subby!! I love your personality & we have the same texture hair. It's so hard to find someone on here with the same hair texture. Most of them either have fine hair or very kinky hair. With that being said it's been hard trying to moisturize my hair properly. So thank you so much for your channel 🙌🏾😍
New subbie. My natural hair mistake was not moisturizing correctly and keeping my ends trimmed.
When I was little my mom always had my hair in braids I have a picture of me as a 3 year old with straight permed hair the day I was gonna get braids after taking mine out 3-7 days ago my mom combed my hair out and she didn't section she didnt wet it she didn't do anything just stuck a comb into my hair and pulled as hard as she could while I screamed smh. ....
lmao_its me what
@@6ftNaturalBeauty I'm confused to
@@godsmoke7678 what's so confusing?
@@karasember everything you said
1.) Trimming my hair too often (it’s an obsession😫). 2.) Shampooing too often, I get product build up really easily (please recommend products that don’t build up!)
Reign keeps on inspiring small RUclipsrs like myself 💜
Happy Friday! Mine was someone flat ironed my hair and the heat was too much.
Happy Friday love! Sheesh heat damage is no joke!
I feel so green, tell me about the pantyhose ponytail holder please. I've read all the comments and I have literally made every mistake listed. I'm on the healthy hair track now though thanks in great part to you and a few other influencers.
My problem has always been not moisturizing enough and in probably still over manipulating my hair
I have low porosity/medium 3c hair
I followed everyone i focused on what everyone else had all the expensive high quality products just because they had long shiny bouncy curls so i thought thats exactly what i needed. Honestly it just caused me more bad than good. Now i know *to* *stop* *following* *the* *crowd*
@plugboi johnny it just looks like 3c curls and some parts are looser
