THIS IS BRILLIANT how one can tuck the quilt front in atop the middle layer for an interesting frame, then stitch around, even if it is smaller than the batting section, sandwiching it in. Framing with binding conserves material in some instances.

Lol they always look easy! These clever women are deft with their sewing skills... I just wish I could replicate but at 60 yo I doubt I'll ever be any good!
Here is a tip: You can hide the end of your binding in the miter instead of having a seam in the binding on the side. Start with leaving the binding of the first side a little longer (1 cm) than the fabric on the side. Now stitch the binding around the cloth as described in the tutorial. When you reach the first/last corner do the 45 degree fold as usual. Now the beginning and the end lie on top of each other. Sew the two binding strips with a small stitch together just outside the fabric, where you would normally do the fold back to the next side. And voila you can form the miter without having a seam visible!
Love this idea, but neither the video nor the tutorial makes it clear how wide the finished binding is on the quilt. I want to use this technique to replace a tattered 3” border on a quilt that currently has no binding and I don’t know if I did the math right.
I love this quilt! I brought the pattern and finding it hard to follow. I wish it had pictures to show the steps, I wish there was a complete video that you could follow after you have purchased it . Is the pattern only 2 pages? I purchase mine from Craftsy. Please help
I think I figured it out, but please confirm if this is right. Since it says that the batting sticks out 3" on all sides bigger than the back fabric, would I just add an additional inch of batting on all sides and then add an additional 2 inches in width to my strips of binding for every inch that I want to add?
I so want to try this, but I want to know if this can actually be used with a piece that has been quilted? I noticed that you tucked the fabric under the binding, would I be able to use this formula for a blanket that has been quilted? I'm working on my first quilt and the binding terrifies me, so this looks so simple. Thanks.

Hey Kate. Love this pattern! I just bought it! Quick question. Since there is batting in this little blanket, doesn't it need to be quilted somehow to keep the batting from moving around, especially after washing? I could but crazy, but you don't have to agree with me! :-)
Excelente su vídeo, es lo que deseo realizar para un cubrelecho que quiero hacer, pero por favor pido que sea en español, pues soy de Colombia, deseo tener bien claro las medidas y entender bien la explicación, muchas gracias
Hi - Since you mentioned this was your first quilt, I would recommend doing a traditional quilt binding instead. This is a bit more advanced and I don't want you to get frustrated. We have a vides titled "How to Bind a Quilt - 6 Simple Steps" to help you through your first quilt. Let me know if this helps! ~Sara~
I would like to have seen how she sews the start binding to the end of binding. I get how to cut 1/2 inch to overlap the beginning. I was really lost on how to sew the two together right sides together.
Hi Gwen, This video is just a highlight of the pattern available for purchase and download for $4.99. If you are interested in the pattern, here is the link: www.craftsy.com/pattern/quilting/home-decor/kates-big-binding/153903 Thanks ~Sara~
Line them up where they butt up exactly, then mark 1/4 inch from the butted edges on each side, then put right sides together and sew on the mark using a straight (not diagonal seam).
Hi I live in Sioux Falls, SD... Where are you guys located? I haven't sewed at all in my life besides by hand and I want to start, could you help? :) Thank you!
Hi, I love how you do this but I live in the UK and so cannot purchase your pattern. Ant chance you would give me the dimensions or post them on here? Many Thanks
Hi Monica - This binding is cut on the straight of grain and offers wonder drape when the quilt is finished. If you are binding your first quilt, check out our video "How to Bind a Quilt - 6 Easy Steps"
I have tried to figure this 'simple' step out and I can't, tried to purchase pattern had problems, I'll try a different method to get same results, too difficult to try to purchase this freaking pattern, so not trying anymore! There are other sites that are better explanations and give more detail than this one!
there are no instructions on how to figure the width of the binding. It gives you the width of the binding strip to cut for this particular 3 inch binding pattern. I thought it would give the formula for any size binding, it give formula for any size quilt using this size binding.
+Susan V Hi Susan, This video was a brief showing of this technique. If you would like the pattern and full directions they are available for purchase and download here: www.craftsy.com/search?query=kates+big+binding&type=&categoryUrl=sewing Thanks, Sara
+Susan V The formula is to help for different size quilts. I would recommend making one just as the pattern is written. Then if you want to adjust the binding size you will know how to do so. The pattern is for a "BIG" binding. 3" was a nice size for most projects. ~Sara~
I would think that if you want 3 inch binding, you double that to 6, then add two 1/4 inch seam allowances, which would tell you to cut 6.5 in, or perhaps add another 1/4 to 1/2 inch for the fold over the edge. So, on their pattern, if it says to cut a 6.5, then you know the formula is to double the width, and add a half inch. If their pattern says to cut a 6 3/4 then the formula would be to cut double and and 3/4 inch. So, for a 4 inch, you'd cut 8 inches plus the half inch, (or 3/4 inch), and cut the batting larger by 4 inches.
Hi - This pattern is available for purchase and download from our website. You can click on the link in this video's description to get taken to the right place. Enjoy! ~Sara~
I purchased this pattern from your website a while ago, but it doesn't say how wide the finished binding on the top of the blanket is once the blanket is done. I want my binding at least 5" wide (on each side) on the top of the blanket when it is finished. How do I change the width of the binding? I see that the pattern has a formula to adjust the size of the quilt, but not a formula to adjust the size of binding. Please help asap. Thanks so much!
C Kelsch given this is a folded over fabric strip and you want 5" either side and allow 1/4" for sewing hems. Allow for 10 1/2" x 2 because the fabric is doubled. So the actual material width is 21"
This pattern is TERRIBLE!!! Directions flip flop back and forth between “smaller than” and “larger than”. They flip flop between measuring from the top to the back. The directions do NOT match the video. Plus it is now bulked with 10 other patterns so you you have to purchase for $10 with 9 other crappy patterns you don’t want. DO NOT BUY!!!!😢😢😢
Thx. This is exactly the quilt I have wanted to make.... double sided with mitred corners. Fabulous.
I love wide binding! This video is a huge help! Thank You!
fan of big binding and these lovely mitred corners are as good to look at as the quilt and fabrics within

how clever. I especially like the fact you can get batting inside easily for warmth.
You have an extremely creative way of doing your videos. It's almost like a scrapbook. Awesome job.

So good.
Thanks 😊
you skipped some between trimming the batting 3 inches out from the backing... what is the wideth of the binding strip? is it double folded?

Just try it at another time.
no entiendo, el primero que muestra tiene el borde igual por los dos lados, haciendo esquinas, cómo es el procedimiento?
With no tacking, tying or quilting don't the layers shift a lot especially when washed?

How much overhang do I need to get my mitered corner. And how wide is this binding?
Can I use this method for an already machine quilted quilt? I need to add a wide border because I didn't make the quilt wide enough. Help!
Did you do this?- same reason I want to try it- I need wider on a King!

@Artylad A "decorative" stitch. Any fun-looking stitch from your sewing machine.
how wide was your binding? I see it was 2 yards. But what was the width?
very nice mam
Do you have to pre-wash the batting?
I wonder if they pre-wash the lot?
I read the direction`s and cant figure the width of a quilt that is 52x52 inches.
52?
I'm having trouble getting it to play. What can I do?
Yes, there is quilting done at the end of this project.

there are no instructions on how to figure the width of the binding.
I bought the the pattern. I does not give the formula for the width of the binding if you want a different width than the 3 inch you show.

If their pattern says to cut a
6 3/4 then the formula would be to cut double and and 3/4 inch. So, for a 4 inch, you'd cut 8 inches plus the half inch, (or 3/4 inch), and cut the batting larger by 4 inches.
Thankyou.
