Cognitive Distortions #5: The FORTUNE-TELLER Error | Dr. Rami Nader

  • One of the most common cognitive distortion is the fortune-teller error, which is this idea that we know what is going to happen in the future, and, in the context of depression and anxiety, the future is bleak and negative. Our predictions of the future are usually influenced by how we are feeling at the time, so if you are feeling depressed or anxious, you are more likely to make predictions that are consistent with those emotions. One of the big problems with the fortune teller error is that it can lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy, whereby we engage in activities that increase the chances of the negative outcome that we are predicting. Another problem with the fortune-teller error is that it causes us to not recognize that our beliefs are only predictions and not facts. As this happens, we come to believe that the negative outcome is guaranteed to happen, rather than seeing it as only a possibility.
So, if you catch yourself using the fortune-teller error, what can you do about it? The first step is to recognize when you are engaging in the fortune-teller error and label those thoughts as such. Then, it is important to remind yourself that you do not own a crystal ball. Finally, it is very important to practice tolerating uncertainty as a way of chipping away at the fortune-teller error.

This is my inner narrative: "I feel as if I have little power to effect positive outcomes, yet I still want to have a handle on the unknown, and worst case scenarios fill that vacuum with little effort." Making that effort has become key. CBT requires confronting some uncomfortable things and making the effort to engage them. Having the tools changes everything and makes that effort productive instead of a vague and wandering psycho-drama.

You're absolutely right about the want for certainty in these conditions and the importance of tolerating distress to cope with them.

Everything that happened was bad and most likely it'll also be bad in the future.
Ig it's fortune telling, but my Depression doesn't let me do things to prevent bad outcomes so they are pretty much going to come true.
I don't have a crystal ball but as things are going rn, it's the only outcome.

Why do the boxes have different color outlines?.yellow/blue/green
Is it significant of catagories of the subject matter?

Keen observation. It's actually just to represent different years that I uploaded the videos - Green/Blue 2020/2021, Yellow/Black 2022, Light Blue/Dark Blue 2023.

@@DrRamiNader Ok thank you. I was trying to pay attention to the colors to see which ones I may have missed🤭 Every time I think I've heard the best one that applies to me and have learned the most ..I see another one. Just for the record. I've been to therapy..but your posts are helping me even more. I also like that they aren't too long...it helps with my concentration. You are very good at what you do. VERY!!

Thankyou so much, this was really helpful. I think the struggle is that much harder for neurodivergent individuals because the brain is wired differently to neurotypicals, have you had much experience with neurodivergent vs neurotypical brains?

Hi Narnia, unfortunately that is not an area I have much experience or training in.
