Rudy knew from the beginning that Metazoo would fail. Two reasons: 1. He collects reserve list MTG cards and cold Foil F&B cards. He has never once collected any Metazoo promo cards. He knew they were toxic. 2. Rudy made over $1 Million selling his Special kits for what $799 or $999 each, what were in most kits? Most of the kits were filled with Metazoo promo cards. He unloaded his entire inventory of Metazoo promo cards in those kits. Nice way to make $1 million.

my day job is working at a company with people who try big ideas, shoot first think later kind of a situation. as someone who's often tasked with "figuring it out", this was so refreshing to hear. people just think if the idea is there, it can just be done. nah. there's so much work that goes into turning over a company, it's really gotta be worth it for someone. even then, it's either more people trying to keep things afloat or a big whale that's going to strip it for parts.
People hate hearing that ideas themselves are borderline worthless on their own :)

If they kept the box count lower and worked with the local game stores more on organized play, this could have had a chance to slowly build a stronger base over time.

When a new tcg company spends over 100,000 to have a spot at SDCC and doesn't bother to have a demo or demo team, run. The owner doesn't care for people to learn to play their game which meant this product was gonna be there for the short term
Most of youtube comments said it since the beginning I feel like, the art is ugly (for most people) the gameplay is bad (for most people) and, yet again, most people were investors, not actual collectors, not actual players. I'm suprised a tcg like this survived for this long if anything :X

Metazoo probably had more investors than players.The cards are also very ugly as hell.
I have encountered 0 players in Europe where I did encounter many Lorcana, transformers TCG and One piece players

@@jordanpalamara I agre that many of the card arts were beautiful. 😊However, I do also agree that the card LAYOUTS were garbage from day one, lol. I even re-designed the card layouts on Photoshop because I thought they were so ugly a couple of years ago. 😆Mike did not like me doing that, LOL.

I'm glad you didn't mention the art in this video. I know you really don't like it, but we must remember that art is subjective, and that artists have feelings. I love much of the MetaZoo art. It sucks what happened here, but I wouldn't of had it any other way. The past couple of years of being in the MetaZoo community has been quite a rollercoaster ride, but it definitely had its ups, and I met some really great people throughout. It's great to hear your thoughts on the matter, Mason. I hope that Card N All has been doing well as of recent!!
Absolutely spot-on! If MetaZoo started on Kickstarter today, I doubt it would catch on the way it did. They rode that pandemic wave as far as they could and ultimately didn't have a solid plan to develop a sustainable business long-term. It's a total contrast with what I see from another TCG that started around the same time (Flesh and Blood). What a waste🤦♂️

This was such a well done video Mason. It balanced perfectly the positive and negatives of what you experienced during your time with Metazoo. I think people that have truly dealt with Metazoo are just disappointed more than anything else - disappointed that something that had brought us such good memories coming to a crash. It's easy for those that just heard of Metazoo to say "oh yeah it was a scam all along" but its difficult what you did admitting it wasn't initially a scam but things just got away and it did end up becoming a rugpull.
My biggest gripe honestly is with you calling Digimon a dead tcg. Too my knowledge the player base is still thriving, it still has a competitive scene that nears max capacity on every large event, the secondary market is hot, and each set sells more than the last. Digimon is dying is just a meme.
I second your statement. To me, Digimon isn't dying or dead. It's past the 2 year mark, stabilized, and it's doing fine.
Bandai does have this really bad habit of cannibalizing their own TCGs. So we don't know the future of Digimon. Hopefully with the death of battle spirits saga, some of those resources can be diverted to Digimon.
They're entirely different teams and they've announced BSS sets through 2024

My view on metazoo was that it had no chance because nobody actually bought the cards to play the game. They just bought them to sell to the next guy. Eventually someone is gonna be that next guy and stuck with product that has no intrinsic value. It's all just in the hands of people who are hoping it gains value. Just like NFTs. No intrinsic value.
Topps cards arent Playable, also you forget all other cards in the industry. Yea its a tcg, but at the end of the day no one really has to play it if people enjoy the product itself, kinda like pokemon and fanboys

My buddy and I were just in your store Friday. We were just visiting from Louisiana. Great shop you've got there. I don't think I met you there, but the guys working were great. Didn't know you did the YT thing too. I halfway agree with your assessment here. But there's a lot of possibilities as to what's going on behind the scenes. I think we're in for more surprises. Not necessarily good surprises, but I think we'll slowly start to find out more in the coming months about what happened last week. Obviously Mike and Andy created one massive shit show. The question is whether there were enough stakeholders to push them out. I don't know that I'd call it a "rug pull". I think these guys were just young, inexperienced, and frankly... stupid... when it came to the corporate side of things. It takes more than vision and dreams. You can't power society on rainbows and unicorn farts. Same goes for businesses on ambition.
Big dreams with no realistic means of achieving them.

Of all the people on youtube your analysis actually = 100% in my opinion, but I am not an insider nor did i ever buy anything but I followed it because I found it amazing that people bought it.
I remember my first ever collectacon that I vendor for metazoo was a huge sponsor. This was the first time that they came to Long Beach and on the Sunday of the event: Mike and other members of Metazoo were walking around checking out who selling and didn’t sell metazoo. I had packs in my booth. I had people interested at that time so I bring in no more than a case at a time. They saw I was selling packs and their theme decks and someone from the marketing team saw I had it thanked me for selling metazoo at this event and handed me a literal stack of promos and their exacts words were “here’s a stack of promos. Sell them they are worth 50 dollars each on eBay”. I refused to grab them and I told their I only sell it because I have people who buy it. I personality thought the game was trash and I don’t want to support a game there there is no player support. I was later banned from their social medias.

I did just grab a box of nightfall but only for posterity, its was so cheap and it wont be opened, the box will look cool on the shelf but i know its not worth anything and thats why i mever bought at full price before

All this metazoo news got me really interested in them. As a pokemon collector, the pika with grey felt hat really pissed me off. I’ll spend the next year or 2 looking for metazoo deals
Excellent video. I was a fan from early 2021, even joined the Patreon before it disbanded. Everything you pointed out in this video is 100% spot on.
I think you are right, Metazoo is dead, why would anyone buy this company etc. I personally don't think a mainstream business would ever want to touch it due to the content of some of the cards so it will only be an indie type game. They definitely did not have a clue what direction to take things. But coming from a non player perspective I do love the cards, the stories behind these cryptids, many I never knew about and have enjoyed opening the packs very much. Plus there will always be the fun trying to chase an Old Scratch or Green Man, ripping super cheap boxes. Just saying the cards will be remembered even though the game was terrible and the people who ran the company were incompetent.
The question is what do you think actually is gonna happen next? Are they just gonna close their doors (for real this time) and disappear?

I saw this coming from the start. The cards themselves had very little going for them in terms of gameplay or art. When your consumer base consisted exclusively of delusional "investors" trying to make a buck off each other, it's not a sustainable business.
I personally loved the artwork of the cards that most people hated. But the obvious disrespect to the actual players of the game was its downfall
I saw the vestiges of bad management relatively early, so i luckily never bought in. You have to see the patterns of bad management. That's why bandai is insanely toxic

Argghh crap Digimon's dead!? I'll have to let my LGS know because their player turnouts say otherwise. Just because booster boxes aren't x4 MSRP doesn't mean the game's dead.
All seriousness, of all Bandai's card games (and theres a lot), Digimon will be the last standing. One Piece has all the investor bros who will disappear after the upcoming reprints, and Dragon Ball Super will basically cannibalise itself with it's 2 games.

On the topic of One Piece, when that game came to my locals it took away a lot of the investor bros from the Digimon community. At first I was jealous. We had lost a number of players and people with cards.
Now that a few months have passed, I'm actually thankful it took those people away. The remaining players and new players who are entering the game are interested in both the franchise and the game. Not in buying boxes and flipping cards.
@TheoJay615 yep, I've seen the same thing. I'm honestly proud of where the game is at at the moment after all these years and Bandai's recent announcement of bringing Western sets in line with Japan's releases brings a lot of confidence to the brand and a new dynamic to the game in my opinion.
Definitely in the company of the best videos so far on this.

The gameplay stunk.
I doubt you even attempted to play. Or if you did, it was one time. I just was in a tournament yesterday and had a blast. Opponent got me down to 10LP and I still got the win. The game is complex with all of the traits, status effects, etc. So if you can't follow a rulebook then this game (and many others) aren't for you. People see the complexity as a barrier to entry. All it takes is some effort to learn something new and have fun with it. Asking for any amount of effort these days is too much of an ask. Meta decks like Fearsome Critters, Grays, Worms, etc are all very fun and viable. To say the gameplay stunk is just flat out wrong but w/e
