2.10.2013 Marines assigned to Scout Sniper Platoon, Battalion Landing Team (BLT) 3/2, 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), and Sailors assigned to the USS Kearsarge (LHD 3), conduct a live-fire exercise while at sea, to practice defending the ship against small boat attacks. The 26th MEU operates continuously across the globe, providing the president and unified combatant commanders with a forward-deployed, sea-based quick reaction force. The MEU is a Marine Air-Ground Task Force capable of conducting amphibious operations, crisis response and limited contingency operations.
"Hey, Luke! Is this a good fishin' spot?" "Yup, sure is. Look at all the fish jumpin'!"
I know the pizza was late, but WTF guys!
Rico Swave lol
Their orders were simple. Take out all of the surrounding submarines first.
Lol thanks
Lol...awesome. (I didn't see any sub debri though...hum.)
I thought he said, take out all the surrounding fish first
With shots like these, no wonder the military budget is so big 🤣
😂😂
The water all around the boat is dead.
Lmao
It's really very simple, if they hit the boat they would have to stop shooting. Where's the fun in that.
Will Smith Have you tried Midol ? The wife tells me it works great.
They were simply playing around I reckon..those guns they shooting from can easily skim through steel & concrete so I recon just toying around..silly tho just wasted ammo.

I swear the comments in here are better than comedians these days because they are trying to tell jokes that don't offend anybody
cartels use subs now. Boats are just there to distract surface resources. They've seized over 120 subs so far. with over 10 times that having made repeated runs.
My cousin Jack Barret was a well known sniper in WW2, and a hunter and hunting knife maker. I think he had quite a record of hits during the war. Great guy
This boat was built at the request of the military by a company in Louisiana. It was conceived as a target drone. In Alaska, where I live, a federal agency mapping the Alaska coast bought several and adapted them for doing mapping in places where it would be too dangerous for a manned boat to operate. They've been a huge success and very useful.
Right, my first thought seeing the boat was 'that is a nice target', especially as I didn't see anyone on board.
Very informative post. Thank you
So what is your point? The object of the exercise is to sink or otherwise destroy the boat.
Snap. I live in Scotland. Came across an intriguing character out your way from the Yukon ..shookum James Mason of gold rush fame. Any connection?
@@whome9111 I think he's just relieved (as am I) that poor, disenfranchised fishermen aren't being ripped to pieces by massive artillery fire.
The fact that you can hear the sound of that machine gun firing a few seconds before you see the impact of the bullets should give you a pretty good idea of the distance these guys are shooting the boat at. They are firing from a rocking ship at a rocking boat at a very long distance, their accuracy is actually pretty impressive.
OK, fair enough. Under what circumstances would you ever consider using a sniper rifle to shoot a moving target from a moving platform at those ranges? Sniper rifles are meant for specific targets that are actually hittable. Do you want to be the hostage standing next to the bad guy when you have guys with sniper rifles shooting at a moving target from a moving platform at that range? My point is that this is not training. It is fun times with big guns while bored out of your skull at sea. If you can legitimately call this training, then we're never going to agree on anything.
Chris Guess you never heard of the Captain Philips incident just a few short years ago. I believe it was snipers shooting from a ship onto another moving target,ie: a boat! Fun or no it still is practice.
Kevin LANGDON Gee whiz, Kev. You really showed me who's boss except for one eensy weensy thing. I have mentioned the whole Captain Phillps thing several times in comments on this video. If you'll recall, that whole thing involved 3 Navy Seal snipers shooting at 3 individual targets in a coordinated shoot in very flat seas at very close range, i.e. 50-100 meters or less.
In this "training", you'll notice these guys are rarely, if ever even hitting the whole freakin' boat. Whether it's because of the range, the rough seas (doesn't look that rough), their own position on a moving platform, or whatever other excuse you want to make for this mess, these guys aren't hitting the broad side of a barn.
If you really believe your Capt. Phillips argument here, then you are entirely too stupid for me to waste any more time on.
yo im a bit late to the party but can you guys think of the fact that these are infantry marines and not SEALs

You try to hit a moving target from almost a klick out... Not easy at all... So shut up and go play COD
Good fun was had by all. Just goes to show how difficult it is to hit a small moving target from a moving platform, ballistics get all funked up
Paint your boat red they said. They’ll never see you coming the said
welcome to the military, where we achieve accuracy, through volume!
There were a lot of dead fish that day.
Ok for any idiot saying they suck for missing.
A. There are slightly rough seas tossing the boat up and down AT LEAST 5ft
B. They are extremely far away. To make a shot at that distance on a moving target is already hard enough.
C. They themselves are on a moving ship.
D.The little boat is powered and moving forward
Those are just a couple of factors involved. I've fired one of these rifles at about 200 yards(extremely close range for this rifle) and have the video on my channel to prove it.
teamhex Nonsense I would have 360 no scoped them with the first shot what are you talking about 😂 (jk)
Those were some very serious warning shots!
They got an A+ for practicing warning shots.

All the fish killed, you meant...
Josph, that's a lie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All fish around the boat from the surface to 10ft deep are probably dead.
LMAO 🤣😆🤣🇺🇸🇺🇸

Im guessing this was a training exercise to teach these Marines how to shoot accurately at sea. They have to gauge the rise and fall effects of the waves on the small boat and the slight movement of the ship they're in. It's not the same as shooting on solid ground. That's ok Marines, I understand.
***** HUH?
***** Oh no, I was being for real. Im pretty sure this was a training exercise to teach the Marines how to shoot at sea.
You can train and train but until you put it to practice and build your confidence then it will become second nature muscle memory for the timing. Slow is Smooth, Smooth is Fast.
jlbtwebb Read the description?? I dont read that shit! HAHAHA.
jlbtwebb Reading the description is like a man asking for directions. Give me a map and a compass, I'll find my own way! LMAO
This is an extremely difficult shot. So many variables, tracers may have been in order to help with the side to side up and down motion of both vessels plus wind drift. A shot like that is more of a hope and pray you hit it.
Seems like a better solution would simply be a single guided missile. Paint the target with good optics, fire the missile, and let it fly up high and then come down and do its own guidance to track that image and boom, one explosion and you're done. Doesn't even have to be a big one, a shoulder fired missile can take out a tank, so surely it can sink a boat.
@@BoopSnoot
I think you mean an RPG? I don't think an RPG has that kind of range. They're shooting 50 cals, a 50 cal is like pennies on the dollar for the Military where a missile costs somewhere in the 100k range. The 50 was probably the better option at the time. But I will say I like your thinking. 😉
@@richardselby1711 RPG usually implies that ghetto unguided Russian surplus poop, more like the recoilless rifle deals with guided heat missiles. They are SUPER cheap, only about $20K, but even at $50K, that is virtually nothing because you'd rarely if ever have to use it and its a one-time purchase cost that can last decades, whereas having say three private security would likely cost $600K-1M per year.
They actually did quite well . Small surface targets are the hardest for navy gunners because you are shooting from an unstable platform at an unstable target. Basically the ship you are on is going up and down and rolling with the sea and so is the target you are shooting at, so by the time the round is fired and arrives it can look an embarrassingly far miss. The solution really is volume of fire , throw everything at and hose it down !
If they were aiming at all that blue water then those Marines are locked in.
Shooting a moving target is hard
lol right

LOL - this is like a lesson in how not to get shot if you're in a boat : )
Outstanding Marines, it only took 1900 rounds, two machine guns and five snipers to get ONE hit on the boat.
Chris Goldman I'm sorry, that was a little mean. But honestly, look back on what you said and try to to tell yourself that it wasn't a stupid thing to say. I really would like to see you try to hit a rocking boat from another rocking boat.
It wasn't a smart comment. I guess you've never shot at a moving target. Very difficult. Now what if you yourself is moving as well? And also from that comment I gather you've never been on a small ship at rough seas. You can tell by the pattern of how the rounds are striking the sea rising and falling around the small craft (up and down) that the ship is rocking side to side. Its all training anyway so add the fact that these recruits are learning and probably have never done anything like this before.
James T
Guys - don't get me wrong - I KNOW how hard it is - but it IS STILL FUNNY...
In fact, watch it again and it just gets funnier - all that fire power and the brave little boat just ploughs on...
PS - the sea isn't rough - it's very calm and actually it's no more difficult than hitting a car from a helicopter. If a Royal Navy gunner couldn't hit a boat that close with a .30 or .50 cal within ten seconds he'd have a lot to answer for... (this I know). It's important to be able to laugh at ourselves as we save the world....
BoredOfBills
It's always good to have a sense of humor. As to your observation "the sea isn't rough"- the water is white capping because of the strong winds... that's rough enough to affect ballistics, that small boat, the navy ship, and their aim.

U guys gotta remember they are in the ocean the water is never still so both the ship and the small target boat is bouncing around in the waves so it takes someone that is well train to directly hit the boat without missing.

Some dude excited to ride his new boat around in the middle of nowhere getting lost then finding some big boat like hey I can ask for directions!
I have fired the M107, not in a tactical environment, but enough to have a coupe of legitimate comments about the weapon system:
1) If you don't weigh 180lbs, minimum, it will beat you up...even with the muzzle brake, it will beat you up.
2) Excellent weapon for a static or near static target.
3) As (in)accurate as any other rifle shooting at a moving target.
> In this scenario, a mounted M2 .50 cal and a couple of boxes of ammo....is the way to deal with a small boat. Single-shot-shooting and hitting the target, is "lucky" shooting, at best.
You can imagine how much harder it would be for them to hit the boat if it was buzzing along at full speed rather than bobbing up and down stationary. At least they hit it once near the back.
Maybe if they tried aiming for the water they would hit the boat...
You have no ideal what you're talking about

That's a heck of a lot of misses

As an infantry Marine, this video saddens me. But then again, we don't know how far the target was, wind and sea conditions. I did a rifle qual in Guam in the rain with pre typhoon wind conditions. Only 2 of us qualified out of 55. Myself and the best shooter in the platoon. My spotter couldn't tell me if I was missing the target to the right or the left. So I aimed at the target to my left and then the target to my right. I finally hit my target with Kentucky windage 8 feet to the right. I was lucky to hit my target, let alone go for a bullseye. I barely passed the min qual score(pizza box medal or marksman), but I'm still very proud that I was 2 of 55 infantry Marines to do so. So bear in mind the conditions and the lack of urgency to hit the target. They might just have been having some fun. Who knows?
What they were doing here was very, very difficult. Small, moving targets on a choppy sea are very hard to hit. There were a number of weapons used in addition to the sniper rifles, including at the time index you reference.
So my taught starts to sink and I bail for the skive which is painted bright red some can be found at sea. I see a freighter and race towards it hoping it can help as food and water has run out. My radio is dead and without warning I'm being fragged by my own government. MERICA!
Oof i can only imagine being a sniper on a ship, trying to hit a few human-sized targets around a mile away (maybe even further), while in the ocean there's heavy af winds that affect the bullet's direction of landing + your ship AND the enemy boat are both shaking from all the waves... bet it's probably the most challenging and nauseating way to practice sniping. Hats off for those snipers if they ever hit anything at all. Practice helps to adapt and overcome, so good for them.
And think of back in sail times when Marines climbed into the foretops and shot muskets st Officers on the opposing ships. Closer range I know but accuracy is hope and prayer.
so many expert marksmen here in the comments, shooting at a small target at sea is quite different
the rise and fall from both vessels has to be taken into account, winds at sea are different
this was probably a training exercise anyway so they can learn how to combat small vessels
Most of the rounds you see hitting the water are from a .50 cal. M2HB heavy machine gun. We had 2 of these mounted on the front of our 82 ft. Coastal Patrol Boat in the USCG. They were used for stopping "go fast" type drug smuggling boats, usually Donzi or similar cigarette boats. The idea was to knock out the engine, not kill the occupants. With a .50 cal. you need to "walk" your shots into your target....especially from a moving ship to a moving target. It's a whole lot harder than you might think. I would think that the snipers with the Barrets had an even harder time.
Bless the USCG, fuck those smuggling boats.
Was going to ask whether having snipers was a waste of time! Firing from a moving platform at a constantly moving platform-surely machine gunning is the only way?
Tim C they are practicing. they train every chance they get. everyone does. everything is an excuse to drill.
Tim C Look at the Maersk Alabama hijacking, where they had Captain Phillips in that small life boat, three men were in the boat with Captain Phillips holding him hostage. Three snipers on the USS Bainbridge set up, at night, with m107's (or m82's) which are .50BMG sniper rifles, and at night, with high waves and wind, sent three shots all at once hitting each of the hostage takers killing them. In the hands of trained professional, they are quite amazing.
NateLB .50s were not used in that incident get your shit straight they couldn't as it was a risk the high penetration could have caused unintentional damage to the hostage
lol i love america but if we're invaded by a army of small boats.... we're fucked
+xBeret
HA HA...they couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.
Lol
That was only a demo of certain weapon systems on that LHD. Look up a seawiz.
+xBeret
As the boat gets closer the more holes appear within in it.
That's funny
The only enemy they would have killed was the fools who jumped ship to "get away from the target".
From a 3 tour Vietnam Marine, I am embarrassed by what is said to be snipers USMC
So many comments by fools who seem to think these shooters can't find the target. First the target appears to be between 300-400 yards, is moving as is the Kearsage. At that range even if the scope is dead on a slight movement of either vessel can create a 5 to 10 foot or more miss. Don't speak of what you don't have a clue about.
Relax.
Storm trooper accuracy ?
+Artruis Joew yes,but you can still see the miss from the splash in the water
the shots that are hitting the water are from heavy machine guns so their accuracy isn't as good as the accuracy of a pistol for example. They spray a lot because of the recoil, that's why they hit the water quite often. The snipers hit nearly every time, when they're good.
They probably hadn't had an engagement in a while and were excited to shoot as much as they could at that poor little boat.
first of all have u ever shot off a boat that shit is unstable as fuck
lmao smh
Think you need help from the British navy 😂😂
Great training to improve marksmanship, it gets easier over time.
The waving sea, that is the catch….
the marine corps produces some of the most accurate fighting men in the world. when they started fielding optics and scopes to marines back when we first invaded iraq, marines were racking up so many head shots that they sent a supervisor down to iraq from washington to investigate because they thought marines were executing enemy combatants.
Are they shooting around it?
hahahaha
Nice grouping, you hit the ocean, I think the boat was a distraction
Even the snipers couldn't hit a moving target 🤣🤣🤣
Gotta love dat' M107.. Loud as a bitch, and kicks ass.
Not as easy as it looks. Pitch, yawing and rolling while trying to zero in on a target...
Yup, and doing all of 0 knots
In the first place it's all warning shots, then after a certain amount of range it becomes actual targeting. I think the most skilled thing is that they didn't actually hit them at first accidentally. Wind, range, keeping calm, pitch, yaw, roll- all of this is extremely hard. Even the best sniper will have issues. The smallest movement, even you breathing, will put off your shot by yards.
Leading a target that's not moving.
And the boat is doing all three of those too.
plus what you are seeing is a zoomed in shot from a probably stabilized camera

No wonder why pirates use small boats then ...
Yeah because lower target profile, nimbler and expendable it's surprisingly hard to see out in the ocean one would but currents and waves obsure many objects out there.
That‘s why the Navys build big ships: So the enemy has a chance to hit it! Now that‘s true sportsmanship.
No fish were harmed while making this film...😂
You guys have to keep in mind that these guys are shooting on a platform that's moving up and down with the sea at a boat that's moving up and down with the sea several hundreds of yards out. And they were just plinking.
So how many fish did they hit?
Seriously, if you have tried to hit something on the high seas that;s bobbing up and down like that you would know it's not that easy.

Fact is, with the wind, distance and dynamic movement of both vessels, it's quite hard for a supersonic bullet to reach a target, let alone a commercial drone jettisoning C4s.
ok...so what, the bullet drop alone is like 166 feet at 2000 yards, then you have variable wind, clearly different at the source and the target, and in-between...then the target moves up and down and side to side, then the big boat rolls and moves up and down as well...then the coriolis equation, (earth curvature, yes it comes in to play at long distances) for a shot that long, sooooooo just to get within a stones throw of that boat is nothing short of a miracle, hitting it...OMGosh...congrats. ooorah!!!
