  • Adventure, Ruckus, Laugher, Joy - The beauty of the 90s JRPG. Loved the energy in this main theme. Remembering what felt like a golden age of gaming and certainly a simpler time period.

I would say that if we are talking about old JRPGs, then you should listen to the amazing soundtrack of Terranigma. That I would say is a masterpiece in musical storytelling. Especially the last OST you will hear in game, The Way Home. I cannot express the emotions I had playing that game and hearing this last song.
Then also listen to the heart-wrenching ending music of Lufia: Fortress of Doom. Holy moly, the amount of music that is coming back to me right now from the old JRPG era fills me with nostalgia and fondness.

Grandia is one of my favorite JRPGs outside the FF series. It's like a comfort anime to me with how it's stry is told and the music is TOP TIER for the pS1 days. 03:35 your wrong, it wasn't a love theme, it's the theme of Goodbye and it's only used two times in the game and those parts make me cry every time for how powerful it is in that moment.

90s style JRPG's always come with great music. One of the closest things in the modern day to that is the remake of the original Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (PMD DX), where the theme doesn't just capture, but it SCREAMS "adventure" through its melody and instrument choice. The fun thing is they somehow fit so many melodies into the GBA, then they remastered it using a mixture of old midis from the original game and remastered variants of the instruments used so it still feels retro but has that modern feel to it.
The instrument choice for Grandia's main theme here is wide and varied, likely just like its world. Having never even played it, it screams "grand adventure!" I also love that electric guitar there, that brings a "dangerous" tone to it while adding to the theme in a way that isn't clashing with the other instruments, rather it actually adds to the composition.

Only just now seeing this but hearing it again and seeing your reaction to music that I fell in love with as a child is something I can't describe. This is a soundtrack that I heard several times growing up as it was a game most of my family enjoyed, and still do even in 2023. The music drives the many emotions present in the game home, and gives you a feel for the grand adventure that waits, the perils you encounter, and the heartbreak and suspense both we and the characters experience. There is a remaster out, and if you ever find a free moment, I HIGHLY recommend playing it. It's an adventure you won't forget. I certainly haven't.

Grandia is such a cozy game that really hits that feeling of the spirit of adventure but it also handles the less comfertable side of growning up and adventuring that I didn't realize until I was an adult. The big realization that JUSTIN CAN NEVER GO HOME AGAIN just hit me hard one time, especially when Sue leaves. Just that moment of realizing that in order to accomplish everything he has he has literally left his world behind. Crossing the sea, climbing the End of the World, about to embark across a unknown sea to a land no human had set foot on (to his knowledge) before and suddenly his friend is sick and needs to go home but he can't take her there and still continue his journey. Sue leaving isn't just some party member going back on the bench for awhile, him sacrificing the teleport orb for her to go home means they are seperated by nigh insurmountable means and once he sets sail again he can't go back to anything resembling his old home. That just hit me different one day at the thought of having to leave a friend behind knowing that he may never see them again. Gadwin says it soon afterwards that its the moment that makes him an adult and it really feels like it.

Grandia is ultimately a story about an adventure. Yes, the party sees horrors along the way, fights toe to toe with a rampaging private military...but you never forget that sweeping vista as you climb over the top of End of the World, and realize the game has only just started, the story isn't even a third told yet. There's still so much world left to see. There's more hills to crest, another ocean to cross, more towers to climb. So many people to meet and wonders to see. Grandia is, indeed, about ultimately the spirit of grand adventure to start. Innocent and pure in its wonder and excitement. It grows sad, sorrowful, even dark and brutal at times, dangerous, but always there's one more leg of the journey. There's a love story there, more than one actually! Friends come and go, but it's never really forever. Because it does come back to that innocent spirit, that hope and wonder.
From setting out from Justin's home of Old Parm with his friend Sue to the New World, to daring battles alongside the adventurer par excellence Feena on a ghost ship and then saving her from an unwanted marriage. Battling the Garlyle forces to protect a hidden race of demihumans from extinction, to climbing the end of the world and finding there's so much farther to go.
It means a lot to me to hear and see someone bring this to people's attention. It is, in my opinion, simply the best traditional JRPG ever made. And that's not praise I give lightly. I really do suggest seeing some of the cutscenes associated with these songs and playing through it yourself at some point.

It's such a shame Grandia isn't more well known. It's my favorite JRPG outside of Xenoblade and the Theme of Grandia is just one of the best pieces of VG music ever made in my opinion. The main reason for that is probably a lack of marketing and sub-par voice acting (no flack to the VAs though, I'm certain they could do better with more time or a better director) but it's one of those games I think everyone should play through at least once.

"There's this beautiful love theme." That's a good call because there is a love story in this game as well. :) This game has some many genres packed into one and the music expressed it. Anything you think the game is based on the music, that's exactly what it is. It's hard to find a game with a story as well made as Grandia 1. People actually thought Grandia was going to be the series that kills Final Fantasy back in the 90s. And they would have too if they didn't partner with Square Enix for Grandia 3. Grandia 3 was the worst game they made, all of the other one are great! (Though, Grandia 1 is the overall best out of them all. And I can probably be objective about that.)

This is kind of adventure the game and the theme captures that. There are a lot of dark a d serious themes in the story but it's viewed through the eyes of an optimistic 16 year old so it never really hits hard. Like this army is subjugating a village. Justin will just be like, "let's beat up those baddies!" It's not until the 3rd act where that naivete drops and even then he never loses his can do attitude. It's just such a feel good game with it's ups and downs and the theme kind of musically spoiled the plot in a way.

One of my favorite games of all time. When my brother got a Playstation it came with a magazine that, itself, came with a demo disc. I played that 30 minute demo for _hours_ over the course of a few weeks before I finally went out, hunted down a copy of Grandia in stores (something I'd never done with a demo before and never did again) and traded my N64 with a dozen games for his Playstation that only had Crash Bandicoot 2.
Best decision I ever made. Especially as the years wore on & I filled out my JRPG library on it. And then moved on to the PS2 because of it.
