  • Inspite of having tons of photography related videos in RUclips, the most frequently asked question is Which camera and Which lens would you suggest for me? Well, in this video, Radhakrishnan is trying to help a beginner photographer by offering him a holistic point of view on what should his/her first gear be.
We use and highly recommend Godox range of Studio Flashes.

This video was such a good assurance for me that the path i took was not wrong. I lived in Bangalore when I got serious about my photography. I took the first dslr camera I got D3200 with 35mm. Took it nearly everywhere I went with me over there, I talked to people and made them comfortable before I took a picture of them. The most important thing to learn from this video is you're not gonna learn anything about your own camera unless you get out there and shoot! compose and shoot that automobile you see on the road, take some candid shots of that little boy sitting down across you. Understand why the camera is taking overexposed images and under exposed why its blurred, try and find out how you got that crystal clear focused picture of that one little car you took. The wonders of photography is beautiful if you start to understand everything about it.

In my sports/outdoor bag I have a D500 plus a Tamron 150-600 G2. There is room in my medium-sized bag for one more small lens, and that lens is always.... the Nikkor 40mm Micro!
I should have known you would recommend that lens... you have great taste.
Like you, I always take that lens in my sports/outdoor bag because it: (1) is a great "normal" focal length, (2) is sharp and beautiful, (3) allows for close macro work if something very small catches my eye, and (4) is wide enough aperture, at 2.8, to allow for a polarizer to be added for controlling reflections without getting TOO narrow on aperture. So, some bokeh is still possible, although not a "bokeh machine", obviously.
Thanks again for sharing your expertise and advice, you are doing a really good service to your audience!

Buy whatever fits your pocket......I love it! Very wise to suggest choosing whatever brand that you like and start out simply with the kit lens. As “your pocket” can afford, you upgrade to the equipment that suits your style of photography. A prime will also give you the sharpest pictures....which is great encouragement to take more pictures....thank-you.

I've been shooting for over 60 years, I started out with an instamatic that used 126 film and bought my first SLR when I was in the army (1968). That first SLR was a Petri that came with a 55mm lens, I sold that over in Korea and picked up a used Nikon F2. Over the years I've owned film as well as digital cameras. The digital cameras we have available now are pretty amazing and are as good as almost any comparable film camera. I currently have a used Nikon d500, I've owned Nikons since 1969 so i have a pretty good stable of lenses.
The 17-70mm that came with my first dslr is still a good lens for walking around because of it's versatility, it's not great but does pretty well for an all around lens. I have a 100mm f2.8 macro I use for close up work and a 50mm f2 that is a great sharp lens for general use, those are my most used fixed lenses. the 50mm G is a steal, great bang for the buck.

By and large it is difficult to go wrong with a major manufacturer, just make sure that their lens system has something to suit the type of shooting you're doing. Also, avoid manufacturers that aren't innovating.

While what he said is very true and very good. The one lens for everything will not work for wildlife, guaranteed. You are not going to reach birds and other animals with a 50mm lens. Likewise for landscape there are often times when you need a zoom as well as a wide angle, because you simply can not reach. Yes you can crop the image to bring backgrounds in closer or crop out unwanted areas, but that will only work to a degree. While using your feet to zoom is a very good point, it will not be useful in all photographic situations.

Good used cameras can be gotten these days for not a lot of money. Pretty much anything from the last 10 years should be good enough to learn with, and I'm seeing Canon 5d mkIII for sale on eBay for only a few hundred dollars. Cropped sensors can be even cheaper, BH Photo was only going to give me $125 for my 7D.

Excellent video.. I researched a lot before get a camera and some years ago I bought my first dslr (d5200) but i want a more pro style and get 12 year old machine(d200) still in my bag..after selling my d5200 i bought a d7200.. after all this I can say the difference is what glass you put in front of a body.. now i am happy owner of 50 1.8 , 80-200 2.8 and 28-75 2.8.. so as you say , a body is important but the lenses make so much difference .. better is invest in a good glass and a camera that fits your lever of knowledge.. Now i still light years away to get all the juice of my d7200.. i know the lenses are fx but some day i will jump into different format..

Interesting suggestion to get a crop sensor body instead of any entry level 'full frame' which is suggested by rest of the tube photography channels. Yes, it's the glass in front of the sensor that matters. I own a D500, a crop sensor body but it offers so much more than D750, a full frame body within the same price range like best AF system Nikon offers, 10FPS, 4K video, and better build quality etc. These factors would also matter while buying a body right? Your video as usual is a viewing pleasure!
By the way, love your W124, very well maintained and looks to me in immaculate condition.

I always use my canon 80D with 24mm f2.8 stm pancake lens.
I can use it for my portrait, group, wedding, even macro photo.

A person entering into the hobby of photography starts suffering from terrible GAS. Don't get me wrong, it's Gear Acquisition Syndrome". I too suffered from that. When gained knowledge about the working of cameras, I find an APSC system is just more than enough for hobbyist like me. I'm not going to print extra large bill boards. Maximum size I may rarely need is A3 size. I was skeptical about noise but I have dxo photolab 2 which is the best software in terms of noise reduction.
I can't buy expensive lenses so why waste my hard earned money on the most expensive camera body for just getting a mediocre quality print?
I found that by manual focus and zooming the live view, we can achieve terribly sharp images. Further processing of the raw image makes the final photograph a professional quality substance.
One needs to know the limitations of their gear and overcome it through their technical skills.
Once upon a time, I demonstrated how we can do night photography using point and shoot without introducing major noise in the final photo. The tiny sensors of these pocket cameras are notorious for making noisy image in low light.

I just started watching your videos recently , interesting and very informative and I like the way you present .
Coming to the point , Ive been planning to buy a professional camera , my choices are Sony A7R3, Nikon D850 and 5D Mark 4 .
    which is your choice ?
the answer should be based on all aspects , like camera quality ,image quality, price , lens options in top of the line range ..etc
My choices for lenses are 24-70 f2.8 lens , 35, 50 or 85 mm f1.4 lens(on of these for portraits ) , 100 mm f2.8 macro lens and 70-200mm f.2.8 lens...etc .Along with camera body ,I would buy only one of these lenses , preferably 24-70 f.28 , rest of the lenses I would buy later one buy one .
Our primary usage of the camera and lenses will be to take portraits , food photography and landscapes ...etc
    Hope you answer me .
    cheers

I use this lens extensively with D5100 more than a year. Optically its brilliant. The only thing I didn't like is - its a variable aperture lens. Although the maximum aperture in lens is f/2.8 the 'actual' lens aperture varies from f/2.8 to f/4.x depending on how far you are from your subject.. But Yes, from a 15k lens I cant expect everything under the sun. :).
