I would highly recommend doing these exercises on real faces as it will challenge your art style and show you the structures that manga artists use to make anime faces. In addition, use these tools to practice other parts like clothes or hands or backgrounds and those aspects will dramatically improve.
Your vids are great. I'm a Western artist on Hentai Foundry, but have been interested in the Anime style, and your vids have really educated me. I've produced some cool pieces since watching your vids, thanks for the help.
I tried this today, and I already feel the immense gap in my abilities. Not only are the original lines slanted incorrectly, but the proportions are often way off. I am feeling skeptical but I will keep at it and trust the process for at least a few more weeks.
So its been a few weeks. Have you kept up with this type of practice and noticed improvements? I just started practicing drawing anime faces using references a few days ago but I didn't do any of the guidelines like he mentioned in the video. I just eyeballed the perspective and drew basic head and sphere guidelines and went with it. I do notice my observation skills improving though.
@bluekrazykris i have been keeping up the practice, although I vary between the face and other parts of the body. The exercise has helped greatly in discovering bad habits in the copying process. For example i would consistently have the same part of the head too big, small, or narrow, which helped me adjust sooner than I would have discovered otherwise. I would say the greatest improvement is the increased awareness of the features' positions in relation to each other. This lead me to be able to accurately scale up or down the size of the face to suit the reference while still having the features align correctly. I will definitely continue with this but also inclue more varied excersises to complement it. Sorry if my writing isn't clear.
Gotta ask; I'm a traditional ... practicert, I don#t wanna call myself an artist yet, but I wanted to ask how I should go about overlaying the practice over the original? glue the drawing over the screen or what?
So when we start practicing this technique is it good to use more guidelines or use less?Because I'm having a hard time reaching 80% accuracy with less guidelines.
Soo no loomis method? just draw lines and copie what i see with out any guidelines? no circle followed by that anoying part where you draw the chin and cheeks only to realise guickly that the cheeks "its allways the f'n cheeks" are not sumetrical if thats not the issue its that the eyes are not the same size or the the nose is to far down or the mouth is to far down... God this is frustrating! PS no i dont have a tablet cus money issues.

I absolutely adore your videos, you really help people with simple explanations
This is the most effective method of practice for me. Basically copy the best I can and analyse what I did wrong/different after
I'm a** at drawing and the custom guidelines for each image really helped me visualize the perspective on my own, thanks fam
I guess next step is draw from imagination… and replenish your visual library for this
