  • Ford just axed the Explorer Hybrid from the public market, but it’s not for the reasons that you might expect. Normally, when a company stops production for a car, it’s because it’s losing them money. But, in the case of the Explorer Hybrid, it’s being cut from the market because it’s too popular, particularly with one section of the market- the cops! That’s right, the boys in blue are so obsessed with this car that they’re buying literally every model that comes off the production line. In this video, we’ll explore exactly why the five-oh are so obsessed with this model, and what it could mean for the Explorer. So, let’s take a look, shall we?

Clearing intersections in this thing while trying to catch up to a car running from you is incredibly frustrating.

The hybrids actually fix the delay I have noticed. The naturally aspirated ones have that delay. The flip side is the hybrids are always in the shop for some sort of repair

I drive one of these for work and they suck ass. They're kinda quick but that's about it. Id rather have a Tahoe any day.

These cars are actually horrible. My department just got one and it already needs to go back to the dealership for repairs under 2,000 miles on the odometer.

Thanks for your input :) Much appreciated. Looks like your departments got unlucky to get the "special car". Still seeing a lot of this kind of police vehicle in NYC. They even have a new livery for it. LOL We will see about this trend will continue or not:) Happy Holidays!

That's the bathtub curve of reliability. Most issues with a new car will occur in the first 6 months of ownership. Especially when it's the first year of a new model.

My department got a batch of hybrids and they actually are better then the regular ones for everyday work HOWEVER! The hybrids are always in and out of the shop with very low mileage and I have never driven one without any warning lights on the dash. That being said the naturally aspirated ones aren’t much better. We are retiring them at 110,000 miles where I have seen fifth gen sedans and suvs at 250,000 miles

These cruisers suck…badly. Had a brand new one and the thing was in the shop every month. They are not reliable at all. Miss the Crown Vic. This is pure crap

Departments hate the hybrids! There are only a couple techs at Ford dealers that are hybrid certified. And the hybrid suffers a ton of electrical issues!

Ford doesn't seem to have a good track record of keeping up with any production these days. Lots of missed promise dates on new models they pushed so hard. This sounds like another excuse for production failure. They seem to be trying to do to much at one time.

Electrical system can’t handle the amp demand so the lights go haywire a lot. Still pretty fast for a hybrid though.

Our local police like them... great on gas when idle time... but hwy mileage terrible 30 years ago v 6 engines were getting 30 mph. My 1999 3.8 chev lumina poluce edition got 31 mpg

I’ve been in a PIU for about 6 years now. WAY better than the Crown Vic or Charger for municipal use. Pretty fast, handles and breaks damn good. Mine has been reliable, then again I have a take home and not a pool car.

I miss when police agencies were more concerned with overall performance of a vehicle that could carry a decent amount of important stuff vs a suv that can carry lots and lots of stuff that may or may not get used in a decade's time and can hardly out perform a 4 cylinder sedan. Lots of cops have issued items they got on day 1 and carry them through their career without ever using or getting a replacement meanwhile the cars they used to carry all that junk have been replaced 6 or 7 times at least.

These cars are pure GARBAGE! The municipality I work for has these to replace the Chargers (which were also trash btw). So issues with these cars....all of them go to the dealer. Fixed Or Repaired Daily.

it was "popular"because cities were passing rules that required the police cars to be hybrids. the cars suck and spend more time in the shop than on the street . the departments complained so they axed the model. this whole video is a LIE
