    This was a wonderful learning experience for me. My younger sister is going into digital media / communications in college, and I myself have toyed around with photography specifically for a while; so I did know some things. However, I think you've explained this better than some professors I've had, and I really love the fact that you aren't specifically pushing one product over another and also that you have this "No shame in using what you've got" kind of attitude.

    Good advice, Ricky. From a scuba diver's viewpoint, we're fortunate that a number of companies make waterproof cases for cell phones and cameras. Regardless of where and how one wants to use it (beach, ocean, lake, pool etc.) DO make sure to take it to said location and without the phone/camera to test the case and seals first. It's also helpful to have a floating case or stick in case it's dropped. Also, consider lights and lens covers, as water diminishes light.

I don't have financial means to buy an iPhone or camera now, it's really expensive in my country, but maybe when it is possible I will. Really nice of you to review the equipments but encourage people to just create without thinking they have to spend too much money. The files it generates are very forgiving if you even vaguely know what you're doing, but you still really need to know what you're doing on the editing end to benefit from it. It's amazing to see how far the phone cameras have gone. I remember not so long ago that it was just a bunch of pixels with barely enough focus to shoot anything you wanted, and now it can take the comparison to any great camera available out there. I'm not interested at all into shooting photos, but I enjoy photography as an art and it was really great to see the difference in the process from 3 different cameras before editing. After that, it's just a matter of taste.
    I have a question though: is that possible, with a bit of editing, to get the exact same result from these cameras? For example, when you showed the sharpness of the portrait version on iPhone, is it possible via Photoshop (or other editing tools) to make it more "natural", just like the other two? In that case, is it just easier to get a camera you'd use without editing? (well, that makes 3 questions in 1...)
    Thanks for this video! Can't wait for the next one :)

    Thank you for this! I'm wanting to take my interviews and convention coverage to the next level and have better equipment so this is really helpful. I've always heard the Sony A7Siii is the best for video, right now we're using the Canon T3i and a GoPro Hero 10.

      Do you have suggestions for the best lens or camera for low light pictures/video or in the situation like concert photography?

    • @RickyOlson
      @RickyOlson  2 года назад +4

      Nice! I think most cameras now day shoot video with good enough specs for most people. The a7siii is up there in terms of being hard to beat. As far as low light goes, again, any modern camera should be able to do the trick. The new Sony cameras coming out have been absolutely destroying the low light game. A7IV, SIII, hell, even the R's are great. On the flip side, people say Canon is catching up in that department, but I don't have any personal anecdotal experience with Canon to experiment on my own. I'd say as long as you're using a fast lens, something like an F2.8, you should do just fine.

    • @BloodyHorrorBri1
      @BloodyHorrorBri1 2 года назад

      @@RickyOlson thank you! I think the next major step would be to upgrade to a Sony, because it always seems to get a lot of praise! The Canon is great to learn on but the focus is frustrating especially when I'm manning it on my own and not paying attention while I'm doing the interviews, did an entire interview with Jensen Ackles that ended up being weirdly blurry, I was pissed!
      I'm happy that more and more cameras are focusing on low light too, since that means less grit! I'm definitely still learning aperture settings and shutter speeds, but it'll come with practice.

    100% true working with what you have available and figuring it out from there is better, going out and spending money on quality equipment without first knowing what you are doing leads to eventually people giving up fast and re selling that expensive equipment for far less and now you wasted time and money

    (this comment is edited after viewing) Hey Ricky! I loved the video, mostly because of how incredibly thorough your explanation was on the difference between those three, and the emphasis on working with what you have first, discover your abilities and possibilities before upgrading into something better.
    I do hope that this comment finds you well, it is so interesting to see how an iPhone can be so sharp and smooth in photos. Being an android user does bestrange me a bit but nevertheless it helped me figure out. Prestine photo, clearly showcasing what is Infront of the lense as if it was placed on a different background. Very efficient texture wise.
    I would like to ask if you are into Canon or Sony, but I do understand that both brands are different from each other. I know many artists on the early career prefer Sony, like Alex Karpas, but now have switched to a Canon armada of products. What is your opinion on that? What content would you like to try outside of Landscape and portrait/face ?
    Thank you for uploading this. It seems that with everything that has been happening, you do place a smile in our faces. I do hope you have one too!

      Thanks, Irene! Great input here. I currently use Sony, but I do really love the look of the things I've seen coming out of Canon's recent releases. I'm not sure if that's me wanting the shiny new thing, or if that's me actually preferring the look of those images more. I really think both companies are great.

      @@RickyOlson Aha! Is that another video comparison I'm smelling coming? Haha. I do agree, in the end both companies are great in their own field and way, and end result targeting. Well ... I don't know if that would help, I would recommend perhaps borrowing a camera from someone who uses a Canon and going from there, if you haven't already done that.
      Also... I want to thank you for the interaction and taking time to answer comments. I really appreciate it, it does translate to more than one, but the most important being that you are caring enough with viewers. I respect that a lot, and I'm sure other people in here.
      One last question before I leave you to your day, what equipment would you use for a video making, perhaps a video clip for the band, or a wedding, or other moving visuals?

    My mom literally had a hacking Sony camera, different lenses, different light things, and filters just in the back of her closet so I have stolen them (with her permission) and now I fully intend to go take pictures of outside

    Best camera to get into if you're looking to get started in photography is... your phone. Your phone has a great camera and likely has a lot of the settings you'd expect on a pro camera. Use that to get used to photography. Then go from there once you know you like it. It's a lot less spendy than buying an expensive camera package. Gettings into lenses and stuff can get pricey, so practice with what you have. Some of my favorite photos happened to be taken with my phone, and the intelligence of the phone and its ability to pick the right settings is insane sometimes.
    And as a casual photographer, I've enjoyed just having a Canon Rebel with the kit lens (about $300 or so for the package) plus a 50mm portrait lens (about $100 or so) to have an additional shooting option. It gets me by just fine as someone who does photography casually.

    It’s prolly wait too late to ask this, but what settings did you have your cameras set to for the comparison photos? Like ISO, aperture, etc. That’ll deffo affect clarity, DOF, and color temperature.

      @RickyOlson  Год назад +1

      Definitely! I can't remember exactly now, but I do know that I tried to match them as closely as possible in every regard.

      @@RickyOlson lol nw! I was just curious. It’s definitely interesting to see the strengths and weaknesses between the Sony and Fujifilm. Looking at the photos, it seems the Sony has a wider color range indoors while the Fuji looked like it might be better for outdoor shots. Also for the iPhone portrait, I think Portrait mode must be somewhat fudging the numbers with its DOF, it looks like the “blur my background” filter on Microsoft Teams lmao 😂 It happens on my iPhone portraits too, so weird
