BODY BURIED in the lake at SUBMERGED Willow Grove School - Saga of Eddie Irons

- This week me and Larry Stephens dive the ruins of the Willow Grove School which lies at the bottom of Dale Hollow lake. Willow Grove was one of the towns that was inundated with water when the reservoir was impounded by the Corps of Engineers in 1942. #TheTownThatDrowned
One of the most interesting aspects of the Willow Grove School is that Eddie Irons was poured in the front steps of the front porch of the school. Lake historian Darren Shell tells the story of young Eddie’s death and burial, then how he was accidently dug up more than once, and eventually poured into the steps of the school.
The Corps of Engineers attempted to free Eddie from the front porch of the school prior to flooding the town of Willow Grove, but the dynamite on slightly damaged the concrete of his now watery tomb. As a result, Eddie Irons remains entombed in concrete of what remains of the school’s front porch.
If you want to listen to the entire hour and a half interview of Darren Shell discussing the history of Dale Hollow Lake, it is Season 2, Episode 40 on Relics Radio and the link is: bit.ly/3hHTsC7

I appreciate the photo credit on the school. At the time I was the camp director of KSP Trooper Island and had dove the school house several times. We were conducting training during the off season and I was flying in a helicopter and upon seeing the school decided I wanted a photograph since the water was down. I sent a copy to the Army Corps which they later published. Thanks again Retired K.S.P. Sgt. Craig Sutton
Thank you for taking the picture. I love diving the school.
Amazing video I love learning about the history behind dale hallow
This one is always good for a rerun. Great story and Darren does a good job telling it.
I enjoyed your video and learning the history of the area. My fraternal grandparents whom I didn't get to know are from the area so it's close to my heart. Thank you.
Pretty good video. My mother was born at Willow Grove in April of 1939. They moved when she was a little girl. I grew up right across the state line in Peytonsburg.
Amazing! Did your mother share many stories of this time?
Here this weekend for my bachelorette... Great video to see
Victoria Grewe thank you and enjoy yourself at Dale Hollow
Loved it and Super interesting Loy! Boy that gives the creeps with the old building and stairs going down in holes! You look Great too!
Yeah I knew you would like the story behind this spot... plus it's a cool place to dive. Thanks for watching. We need to schedule you guys for another appearance on Relics Radio soon
Thank you for the History and Awesome dive!! ❤
Tracey Walker-Fuqua thank you so much for watching. I really appreciate it.
That was one very classy and intreaguing story. Thanks for the video! Garnet.
Thank you for watching and for your kind words. Glad you liked it.
Am so happy to have found your channel! My great grandfather John Henson Pierce and his sons owned farms they sold to the Tennessee river valley association about 1940 that is under the lake.
I am excited to to learn about the history of Willis creek.
Thank you. I appreciate you watching
This video never gets old.
No it doesn’t.
We just went two weeks ago to go surfing!! I love dale hollow lake such a beautiful huge lake!
Yes we love it too.
I really enjoyed that sir. Learning the history was fascinating. I'm glad I finally got to see you dive the school!
Amphibious Detecting thank you so much. I’ve been looking forward to this dive all summer.
This was a great video Loy!
Adventure Archaeology thanks buddy. I appreciate it
GREAT vid! We’ve been boating this lake for over 40 years and first vid image I’ve seen. A bucket list spot for sure!
Yes it is. In the Fall you can see most of it from the surface. Thanks for watching.
Just stumbled upon your video and I was reminded of stories my dad told. I remember when the Big Muddy River was dammed up to form Rend Lake in Southern Illinois. Both my patents were from that area. One of the funny things my dad told was he could point out where a house was that a girlfriend lived. Your video brought back some fond memories of my dad. Thank you
Thank you so much and glad it brought back good memories.
Hope you are doing well Seven. Big fan of the videos. Avid fisherman of the obey. Best
Thank you so much for watching. I appreciate it
@@DigginwithSeven do any fly fishin?
Wow great underwater video! You can see everything!
I know, Dale Hollow is a very clear lake... and this dive was on a bad day. Lol. Thanks for watching.
Cool piece of video history! Thank you for your creative video documentary. Years ago a bunch of friends & I rented a house boat for a week. Beautiful area. I actually found some geodes in the rock cliffs in one of the coves. My boys were young and their grandpa took the geodes to work and sawed them in half to expose the beautiful crystals.
Thanks Deej. Yes it is a beautiful lake and area that is rich in history... and a lot of geodes too.
I have been waiting on the Willow Grove School Video!
Nick Haas thanks buddy. Hope you enjoyed it. I plan another dive there soon
@@DigginwithSeven It was GREAT! Love the narration. I cannot wait to see you with the pulsedive on the old school grounds!
Great story, we spend our summers at Dale Hollow and have read the book. We go to Willow Grove a lot and the history of Dale Hollow is fascinating. Thanks for video and sharing
Thanks for watching Tony. Please share the link with your friends.
What an amazing place, that's one heck of a dive! Thanks for sharing!
MUDSWAT thank you for watching. I appreciate it.
I can’t believe how good the visibility is. I was telling my husband about this story just a few days ago.
Yeah normally the visibility is a little better, but it turned out nice. It's a very interesting story for sure. Thanks for watching.
What an amazing story...thank you for sharing..
Thanks for watching Steve. Yes it is an amazing story.
Very cool history and dive. Thanks for sharing, good luck, happy hunting and take care.
Thanks buddy. Yeah it's a great piece of history and it made the dive all that much more special
That's pretty neat. Great idea with the video and the sound track. Thanks
Thank you. We interviewed Darren last year and nobody can tell the story like he does. Glad you liked it.
Great work and visibility is great
9 Mile Bros yeah Dale Hollow is a really clear lake and a joy to dive. Thanks for watching buddy
@@DigginwithSeven Anytime brother
Wow, just wow. Great video and story.
Lisa Davis thank you so much Lisa
I just binged 3-4 of your videos while doing the dishes. I miss you on the podcast but I understand you have a higher calling now. Questions: Do you metal detector anymore or just find objects underwater by eye? Do you bring any of the finds up like the rod & reel or many sunglasses to help clean up the lake? That car or marine battery in the lake really upset me. I hope that wasn’t intentional. Hopefully it will never leak. Good to hear & see you.
Cool story, seems like all the old out of the way small country towns have a unusual story to tell about the history of the area👍🏻
Yeah this a very unique story that really captured my imagination... I couldn't wait to dive it, now can't wait to go back. Thanks for watching.
What a great story behind the local legend Eddie
Yes it is and I was happy that me and Larry got to dive it and document the spot in video.
Awesome! Great finds!
Thanks buddy
It was a fun dive and I am glad I got to tag along and make a few bubbles. You did an outstanding job editing the video on the history of Willow Grove and the story of Eddie Irons. I doubt many people that dive the school even know that Eddie is there.
I'm so glad you came and we got to go. I waited all summer to get to do this one dive out of all I did. It's a very special place with an amazing story. I'm already looking forward to us going back.
Just was at willow grove 2 days ago. Im good on diving
My family is from Celina really cool y’all are checking this out
Thank you. It’s an amazing story
Wonderful video-I really enjoyed it!
Aggie Hall thank you so much. I enjoyed doing this one.

Come on down. We can visit with
Eddie together.
Pink Power Ally Treasure Hunter you know you are always welcome Alison
Diggin' with Seven OPEN UP BORDERS!!!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Very cool video and story. Right here in North Central Texas, the town of Comanche, home to the notorious AND famous gunslinger John Wesley Hardin. Talk about a small town with a HUGE story. Hardin pretty much made his name after a day of dealing with bets on horses and racing his own horse to win a lot of money. The big story starts right where that large amount of money came in.
Yeah I guess every town has its own story. Thanks for sharing and watching the video. I appreciate it.
Very interesting!!
I know it’s a great bit of history isn’t it?
Coool brother. Thanks
Thanks buddy for watching. I appreciate it
Pretty cool!!
mokpot thank you
Loy, I’d detect one square acre around that school, there has to be a ton of Silver and IH penny’s in that area
Dennis Morrison I know. We haven’t detected it yet but plan to. Thanks for watching buddy. I appreciate it.
Good morning my friend
Notrightjohnny Detecting junkie hey
I was searching for the one on poway, but didnt expect this.
I'm fairly familiar with the lake we camp and boat at both Willow grove and Lillydale campgrounds where would this foundation be from the Willow grove boat dock
AUsome video .
Thank you for watching. Glad you liked it.
Do you have the book and video of this? I got from Darren Shell. They moved from here on Prentice’s 3rd birthday. Moved to Gamaliel. I’m thankful for Darren helping me acquire after they stopped selling. Also have the book.
Interesting story and place! Thanks for sharing!!! You need to replace Larry with a Trot Lines girl though...lol.
Lol... Thanks for watching.
LOL... Loy, he is referring to Hook Line and Chill on the Green River. He went to almost 150K subscribers in two years and has over 100K views on about every video and over 500K on many of them.
I’ve always been scared of the school underneath us that went to willow grove
Hey sir, I was thinking was they was trying to cover up old world buildings here with the dam, the theory is places like our capitols statue of liberty and pentagon and more was already here, look in to the world fairs. These was old nice buldings similar to our captiols and building across world, I believe they may becovering up stuff.
chief nettle carrier was a very forward thinking man he and chief John Ross are two of my favorite chiefs of my tribe because they were both forward thinkers. Chief Nettle thought to sell the land and make to help during our time of movement and Chief John Ross held us together to the best of his ability during the civil stating time and time again his displeasure in having to join in a “white mans quarrel”.
Thanks for your input and for watching.
Very interesting! You're part of what tribe, please?
Sorry I missed this one
Yeah it's a video from last year but still my favorite dive video because of the history.
Very interesting story & great video! What kind of camera & lights do you use for your underwater filming? Now I am going to listen to the entire interview!
I filmed it with a GoPro Hero 7... no lights. It is an interesting story. Thanks for watching buddy.
Wow so it’s true
Yes it is! Amazing story
I had read online a while back about a civil war treasure being buried there before the lake but it has never been found
Interesting. Do you have links?
No but all you have to do is civil war treasure at dale hollow lake
Google it and it will pop up, civil war treasure at dale hollow lake
@@DigginwithSeven it showed up on one called,.. only in your state , kentucky
@@DigginwithSeven canon courier , Vinson treasure dale hollow lake

Can’t remember exactly but between 15-20 feet

It’s a fun dive
Wait is this Tennessee?
Yes Dale Hollow Lake in Tennessee
@@DigginwithSeven im from Murfreesboro is that close by? I'd like to check it out
Yeah it’s along the Kentucky-Tennessee line east of Nashsville.
I go to Dale hollow lake
He knows my nana to Martha parker
Kids what can ya do 🤷 Eddie's poor parents 😢 It's sad that he was buried, dug up and reburied 2 other times. He'll possibly forever be under the water and stay inside of his cement tomb unless the lake gears drained by some group in the future. Let's hope that one day young Eddie can be buried in a proper cemetery in Dales Hollow and remain there forever undisturbed. This was very interesting to hear about Loy, Thank you 👍☺
Yeah it’s a sad and very unusual story. I appreciate you watching.
You all are digging where Prentice was born.
Not sure, where is that?
Lillydale, TN. His Mom and Dad went to school where boy was left encased in concrete steps. Prentice was 3 when they had to move because of dam. A lot of people relocated in Gamaliel or Livingston , TN. They moved with Oxen. His Mother told me they had to leave a lot of furniture because of size. Just left in home and moved. Don’t you know that was so hard on them being displaced.
Loy I have some photos you may enjoy. The places you are exploring before the dam.
@@stanfordjane64 very sad story. Thanks for sharing.
@@DigginwithSeven Loy Prentice lived at Lillydale. You could stand at one of the parks and see their cellar sticking up. She told me they had to leave so many things because they moved with Oxen teams. I have some photos of their Oxen. Roy Anderson used to go there..he bought Oxen from them. I had a picture of him with Oxen but he kept. I don’t have any more. Very few pictures. But I do have some. Thanks Jane. (I’m sure it brought so many memories that day to her). It was very traumatic losing their farms etc. Jim’s side of family. Cordia was married very young.
Well i guess Eddy is finally put too rest once in for all. My gosh. They could have put him in a nearby cemetery for christ sake.
Originally it was a cemetery of only one grave. I guess after building the school there they felt obligated to keep putting Eddie back in his original spot. It is a very unusual story that captured my attention.
I now him
