Buff Orpingtons are so so sweet and docile. I like having colorful eggs myself, so I like to keep some olive eggers and black copper marans as well. I have found barred rock hens to be pecky, but they are a good heavy breed. If you want a chicken you can handle and love on orpingtons all the way. I am hoping to add some lavender ones to my flock!

I was lucky, I was able to convert a play house the previous owners of our house left behind into a walk-in coop for just the cost of some paint and 2x4s. My wife wanted it gone because it had some serious haunted dollhouse vibes but I ripped all the cutesy trim off, painted it barn red, and she agreed it was no longer creepy and could stay.

    • @johncaswell2648

To follow up on breeds, I love my wyandottes and brahmas. They're bigger, slower growing birds but I don't need 6 eggs every day so I'd rather they have a longer productive life even if they only lay every 2-3 days. Orpingtons, barred rocks, and easter eggers types are good too. They're really more trouble than they're worth, but I also love polish, not very productive and tend to get picked on but too silly not to love.

During a hurricane my chicken coop got a hole in it and when we got back home we only had one chicken left her name was Red because she was a Rhode Island red but we all called her “what what” because that’s what it sounded like she was saying all the time and she turned into a pet and would sleep on our porch on a rocking chair with a pan underneath her “we potty trained a chicken” she would follow me around the garden and just watch what I was doing would jump in my lap and lay down and if I pointed to a weed or bug in my garden she would pull it out or eat it. I have had many types of chickens, and the Ameraucanas are the sweetest and hardiest of them all. They lay blue eggs (not every day), and are very cold hardy (it got to -22 this winter). Even the rooster was a sweetheart, and let us pick him up and hold him. We have one hen that follows us around more like a dog, and will fly onto your lap for cuddles.

Australorps are your go to all around chicken. They did great in Calle Tania, CA where some of our very good friends live. They lay massive eggs, they do great, they're also very good at going through gardens without hurting the vegetables within the garden. You can also harvest them for meat if you want because they're big birds. They're very gentle and love people. If you can have one, I would suggest a small rooster to be with your hens because they really prefer being with a rooster for protection. You can get crow bands that go around the roosters neck and blocks the ability for them to crow. They do make bantam sized versions of pretty much all breeds of chickens, so you can look for that as well.

Both nice friendly chickens. Gotta watch out for Cooper Hawks, aka chicken hawks. Very agile flyers so they can get around most obstacles,They will take out you chickens quickly. On another note - hey guys I am going on 69 this year and I use the hand saws all the time. No big deal lol. I have taken out a peach tree as well as an orange tree. My sons will take out the trunks and I finish off removing the large root base. I only use power tools when necessary, mostly my blower because I hate sweeping!

At my parents' one of the best hens turned out to be factory farm rescues of Leghorn breeding... they are good laying fowls and they ended up living and producing for years, the last one is 6 and still going strong. But that's a risky venture, they often die of previous exhaustion despite receiving good care and are more likely to carry illnesses so quarantine is an absolute must
The next best ones were Dominant Blue (the Blue x Barred Plymouth Rock crosses) and leghorn crosses

That is one beautiful and fancy hen house and yard. We learned the hard way. A small ready to assemble coop was too light weight so we fastened 4x4s along the base. We got 6 chicks and when they were half grown the mesh wire was breeched anyway by a predator pushing in on a corner of the screen. 2 chickens lost. We reinforced with more wire. Later a 10x10 dog kennel topped with wire fence and surrounding the small coop created a larger yard for 4 remaining chickens. But it could be squeezed through by raccoons that found any large space in the chain link. Thankfully, I locked them in the smaller house at night. Later a newer 10x16 coop built with lumber and good wire had a space large enough for a predator to squeeze under the gate. Lost the final chickens after all this. Today we have hardware cloth (wire) surrounding the first coop with the dog kennel. Fastened with zipties. And there is 12 inches of fence below the entire perimeter. Cinderblocks buried next to that on outside. Chickens still dig so well that if that wasn't there, they'd have more intruders. Racoons regularly try to get through the outside but end up just taking the dirt out of the cinderblock centers when they dig. Second coop needs more improvements to be safe to use again. Currently have 3 Rhode Island Reds and 3 Silver Streaks. Getting 3 to 5 eggs a day. Not sure who the holdout is. But it is still way too many eggs for just me and the hubby. Expensive eggs after all this, but they are great and the hens are fun to watch and get to know. When my garden was infested with caterpillars I tossed them in the coop and the girls helped me get my revenge. Be sure to check what NOT to feed chickens. NO TOMATO vines. NO white potatoes of any kind raw or cooked. No avocado or asparagus.

I will add prairie blue bell eggers and olive eggers to the suggestion box. The blue bells lay blue eggs and are very varied in feather color so they make for a pretty flock. The olive eggers lay green or brown eggs. Both are active foragers and lay a large number of eggs per year and their "medium" eggs are still larger than most serious bought "large" eggs. There’s a breed that i saw on a neighbours’ property and had to stop and ask what those jet black beauties were. Black Australorps, a good sturdy breed that came from crossing the English Orpingtons and something from Australia! Great temperaments, excellent layers of big, brown eggs. Then there are Aracaunas and Ameracaunas, both coming from Chile and the latter being a hybrid of Easter Eggers. Their claim to fame are the gorgeous blue and green eggs they produce, and how! I live in almost- the- desert where it gets below freezing during winter (got down to 0° F some days the week before last) and 95-100° F over summer, so I doubt I could care for chickens without powered climate control... but it might be worth checking if there are any already adapted to this environment.

Nice coop. My dream coop for sure. Only thing that looks tacky too me, is the fact the hens stairs/ladder isn’t one complete piece to the ground.

I adore my buff Orpington, blue Cochin, and rhode island reds. Great personalities. The Cochin can be a little noisy and is somewhat broody. My Easter Eggers are a little more assertive, but still social and lay green eggs. All seem to be pretty good layers…

My chickens came last Friday. I have 5 Silkie Bantams. They are small when full grown and only lay 2-3 eggs/week each. The eggs are 3/4 size. I didn't want to end up with too many eggs since it's just my daughter and me. Of course, they don't lay when they get broody and Silkies tend to be broody. Silkies have a great temperament, are funny, and tend to be quieter than many other breeds. My coop isn't quite finished and neither is the run, but it's DIY. Unfortunately, I can't draw a straight line with a ruler, cut a straight line with a saw, and level isn't happening - but I doubt the chicks will care! It's got many of the features of your fabulous coop, but mine is "Rustic". If you read this, here's some info that might be helpful: grind the starter crumble because even starter crumble is too large for the chicks the first week. Use a very shallow dish or lid to a jar as a food bowl. Be prepared to wash their butts the first few days. It's common for newly hatched chicks to get pasty butt (where the excrement sticks to their vent) and if it's not washed off (use warm water and part of an old t-shirt), they can die because they can't potty. Even in San Diego, the newly hatched chicks will need a brooder heater (I got the radiant kind from Tractor Supply $42) for a month or so. You won't want them in the new coop for the first 6 weeks. You'll want them in the house. The garage is okay if no cars are parked in it. I also ground up the oyster shell scratch (they don't really need it the first week, from what I understand) but only give a tiny amount.

My ISA hybrids are great layers, very friendly & enjoy digging for bugs. I have to keep them out of my garden during the growing season, I hide treats in our compost pile so they help turn it for me. I'd put a dry dirt bath somewhere in your coop, so you can add diatomaceous earth to the ash, sand, dirt combo they enjoy bathing in.

Please don't buy from the big breeding houses. Everyone wants female chicks so the thousands of unwanted male chicks go into the trash cans or chippers. Get eggs from your neighbors and hatch your own.

    Jealous!
I started with 3 Wyandottes because they can stand the cold, I believe down to 5°F. Their body shape is perfectly proportioned, they are really pretty. The Colombian is white with a black necklace around it’s neck. The red-laced blue tip has striking coloring especially in the sun, like an oil slick, and my Silver-laced is classic and so sweet. They also are a breed that will lay eggs year-round when the other hens have stopped laying due to winter! I wanted year round eggs. Each produce approximately 200 eggs a year! x 3, leaves me eggs to give away. They are medium size eggs light tan to ruddy pinkish.
have fun they are so amusing. Just today, a neighborhood cat and 2 squirrels were in the yard socializing with them. Well, eating their scratch. Cats are supposed to be not their friends ha!

YAY! Finally! That is such a beautiful and well designed coop!
Regarding chicken breeds - highly recommend Murry McMurry for your chicks. Breed wise - research yourself what you want.
Also be aware - free ranging in your yard they might help themself to your massive garden (they will eat lettus, strawberries and other veg)
