    Music Producers are like the Director of a movie. Someone else can write the script (melody/song basics), someone else is the camera man and that influences the feel, the actors all have their styles and portrayals of the characters, but in the end it's the job of the director to put it all together in the vision of the end product. That's how you can tell the differences of directors, and also music producers (for pop, at least).

      Actually the most people don't know how to design sounds AND can't play piano. A lot of them are using prefabricated midi-files. It's more like "paint by numbers" these days. They choose melodys and chords which are already exists, choose the same presets like all the others, build these typical cheap 808 drums around it and have no clue how to mix it.

    • @DevylProductions
      @DevylProductions 9 лет назад

      *****
      DJ Mustard is a shame. The only beats from "him" that aren't that bad are actually from ghostproducers. Like the my nigga beat...A other producer made the melodys and sounds of this song and he just added a snap, a clap, a kick and a 808 which is not even in the right tune. But he gets all the money and the credits for the beat. I do not begrudge anyone their success, but only if it's deserved.

    Every "theory" of music is no more than an explanation of the observed effect of organized sounds we refer to as "music"; from notes, chords, rhythm, melody & modes etc. Just as your question regarding architecture, the skill itself was developed through application- the theory was invented to explain the application of the skill itself. Whether one has the opportunity, resource, time dexterity or discipline to develop the skill is another matter altogether.

    @bootr0s Well...yeah. JR Rotem is a musician's musician. Dude doesn't just make hip-hop. I mean, he's got to have what he needs to get the sounds he hears in his head. That has always meant a studio full of stuff, if you want to make electronic music. If you want to make folk music, get guitar or piano and go to work. I have tremendous respect for him, even if I don't like all of his music.

    @glasspig I was drawing a comparison between what a music producer does in a studio to what a director does behind the camera on a movie set. It was an analogy and not meant to be taken in a literal sense. Quincy has many skills that are no longer crucial for a successful producer to posses, composing orchestra parts by hand with a pencil and paper is one example.

    @RapidTraxx I do call myself a producer but that is simply because it is much quicker and easier than saying 'composer/ remixer/ mix engineer/ musician' lol. Although I feel I can 'produce' someone pretty well if i'm working with them, a singer for example. But its certainly a plus to know your way round a mixing desk and other studio gear, keyboard, bass, and guitar etc, because you can obviously do everything yourself rather than sourcing mix engineers, session players and so on!

  • @experiment0003
    @experiment0003 12 лет назад

    @glasspig exactly my point! You have to be knowledgeable about music in general... that's like a general criteria to being a successful producer. But knowing how to play an instrument isn't the same thing as being knowledgeable about music!

    @RapidTraxx No one knows what the true role of a producer is these days. It's become very blurred, mainly because a lot of producers these days can play instruments and act as the engineer within the studio too. The true role of a producer WAS usually just to influence the creative direction of an artist/ band. If he could play instruments and mix too then bonus. Or there would be a seperate engineer and session musician(s).

  • @ProducerOmari
    @ProducerOmari 12 лет назад

    @swissbeats23 I understand what your'e trying to say as I play instruments and compose music myself. But I also understand that actually playing instruments in not for everyone and you can still be just as brilliant and creative by using samples or getting other musicians to play for you. Like J.R says, as long as you can create the sound or the picture that is in your head it doesn't really matter whether you play an instrument or not.

    @airfloydmusic: That's like saying one needs to go to music school to learn what rhythm is-i.e. tapping one's foot. No of course you don't "need" to go to any "architecture school". If the idea already exists in the mind all one needs to do is use one's ingenium & the proper resource to express/materialize that idea. Does learning the alphabet or English literatyure make you a good writer? No -no more than learning "music theory" makes anyone a good musician or composer.

    @glasspig I agree that being able to play an instrument is an advantage in a way as obviously you can play your own melodies etc. But the only thing a producer needs is an imagination and creativity, I've seen people on youtube who make good beats and they don't play instrument.. they just use mouse. I've also seen extremely talented musicians who can play pretty much any song, but don't have the imagination to producer their own music.
