This guy almost seems forgotten, but he's a legendary producer, especially for west coast hip hop. His best beats can go toe to toe with Storch and Dre's catalog
definitly one of the most if not the only producer/engineer that has inspired me to take recording and beats as a serious profession hopefully my scholorship will work out and i can turn that ambition into somthing and be able to thank him in person, incredable talent man thanx for the inspiration
Thanks for uploading. Who have ears to hear let them hear! Folks in the chat back and forth about who can make beats but this guy just proved the importance of music theory...he had so many options in a few minutes. Hats off to him. Great lessons here in such a short time. Peace!
The software he used is Pro Tools and he's using the sounds from the Fantom and Triton Extreme keyboards using the Fantom as a MIDI controller as well.
I am so glad that he is showing his set up. So many people keep trying to get the newest thing out and not using what they already have to the fullest.
Jeez, way more to it than I thought. Hats off to you. He must have an amazing understanding of music at a base level to switch and change his ideas so easily. Colour me impressed.
Music Producers are like the Director of a movie. Someone else can write the script (melody/song basics), someone else is the camera man and that influences the feel, the actors all have their styles and portrayals of the characters, but in the end it's the job of the director to put it all together in the vision of the end product. That's how you can tell the differences of directors, and also music producers (for pop, at least).
i missed where it said he was producing an original beat..or hit for that matter. all the comments saying he's a joke are pointless. He's just showing HOW he does his work.
***** Actually the most people don't know how to design sounds AND can't play piano. A lot of them are using prefabricated midi-files. It's more like "paint by numbers" these days. They choose melodys and chords which are already exists, choose the same presets like all the others, build these typical cheap 808 drums around it and have no clue how to mix it.
***** DJ Mustard is a shame. The only beats from "him" that aren't that bad are actually from ghostproducers. Like the my nigga beat...A other producer made the melodys and sounds of this song and he just added a snap, a clap, a kick and a 808 which is not even in the right tune. But he gets all the money and the credits for the beat. I do not begrudge anyone their success, but only if it's deserved.
Every "theory" of music is no more than an explanation of the observed effect of organized sounds we refer to as "music"; from notes, chords, rhythm, melody & modes etc. Just as your question regarding architecture, the skill itself was developed through application- the theory was invented to explain the application of the skill itself. Whether one has the opportunity, resource, time dexterity or discipline to develop the skill is another matter altogether.
yep totally agree with you there..finding sounds can be time consuming and kill the vibe..its best to pick two or three synths and learn them inside out so that you know where to get the sound or make it quickly when you need it.
I have a new producer to look at on the RUclips. He lays it down flat. Plain and simple. He's not trying to hide any secrets. He tells it like it is. Everybody give it up JR Rotem.
@glasspig exactly my point! You have to be knowledgeable about music in general... that's like a general criteria to being a successful producer. But knowing how to play an instrument isn't the same thing as being knowledgeable about music!
@bootr0s Well...yeah. JR Rotem is a musician's musician. Dude doesn't just make hip-hop. I mean, he's got to have what he needs to get the sounds he hears in his head. That has always meant a studio full of stuff, if you want to make electronic music. If you want to make folk music, get guitar or piano and go to work. I have tremendous respect for him, even if I don't like all of his music.
@PhreshMajor You can if you get that Windows add on (which that seems unnecessary) - but I've heard that ImageLine is actually developing an FL Studio for Mac now which is awesome lol - Bout time right - I totally agree with you though its about how you use what you got instead of getting a bunch of equipment you dont know how to use properly
@jbeers397 The extra synth part in "Big Poppa" was supposedly made with a Casio--I don't know which model. But, Casio did make a few "pro"-level boards, like the VL/CZ/FZ series.
@RapidTraxx I do call myself a producer but that is simply because it is much quicker and easier than saying 'composer/ remixer/ mix engineer/ musician' lol. Although I feel I can 'produce' someone pretty well if i'm working with them, a singer for example. But its certainly a plus to know your way round a mixing desk and other studio gear, keyboard, bass, and guitar etc, because you can obviously do everything yourself rather than sourcing mix engineers, session players and so on!
@swissbeats23 I understand what your'e trying to say as I play instruments and compose music myself. But I also understand that actually playing instruments in not for everyone and you can still be just as brilliant and creative by using samples or getting other musicians to play for you. Like J.R says, as long as you can create the sound or the picture that is in your head it doesn't really matter whether you play an instrument or not.
@jaycbeatz1 Around $600 for a copy of PT10. Idk if PT9 is still the same price. It depends what you want the program to use it for. They have free trials of programs like Pro Tools floating around so I would try those out first and get a feel for one.
I am someone that does not have any musical talent just love music. Although I try and it just for fun something got to give. After a long time of practice my music should become better. Only started again three months ago, and also added some of those loops on RUclips. Yea, they still suck but I put them up for free, Anyone can take them and see if they can make something better though. That is if they can figure out how to do it.
i cant seem to replicate that old school west coast synth @ 4:19 no matter how much i try. nebody gotta pliug in or settings that can help me with that?

This seriously inspired me as a young beat maker, this video meant A LOT!
I am so glad that he is showing his set up. So many people keep trying to get the newest thing out and not using what they already have to the fullest.

Never really realized this dude made a good chunk of the pop hits on my playlist that have his signature "J-J-J-J-J- R" soundbyte in the beginning
I remember I look up who produced what you say beat. And saw this vid on here and was blown away jr romtem is a beast
he makes me realize how badly i need to study music theory

I did not expect him to look like this..
this dude is responsible for so many bangers I loved growing up
JR is one of the realest producers out there. He seems like a chill dude.
within 40 seconds, he nonchalantly dissed dr. dre... I like it.
***** That is bullshit. Not anyone can make these chords. Dr. Dre gets credits for work he didnt done.

But Consider back in The day Producers Didnt have all this equipment and Sampling also wasnt that easy
The piano and whistle sample is from reason 4. I made the same beat using those 2 exact samples ! 🤯

jr rotem is probably the most versatile producer in hiphop

in the club people find it easier to dance to more simplistic music and also to make radio hits its gotta be simplified so people remember it easily.
How many songs can he make for a day? 50, 100, 200?
THIS GUYS A LEGEND!if ur true music fans u can appreciate talent like that
SOS, Bust it baby 2, and The Boss are some of my favorite JR beats

Did you watch the video? He first used the Fantom G and then controlled another synth via MIDI for what he called the 80's sound...
jr rotem is one of the best producers

Why are people even fascinated by the keyboard he's using? He's generating sounds from his pro tools sequencer.
@RapidTraxx I do call myself a producer but that is simply because it is much quicker and easier than saying 'composer/ remixer/ mix engineer/ musician' lol. are you pulling sounds from the Fantom G? or somewhere else and just using the Fantom G as a controller...?
@jaycbeatz1 It's an older version of Pro Tools. Not sure which one exactly.
JR Rotem is the dank!
That beat was fresh, dang.
@judenihalmusic a lot of proffesional producers do make music in FL studio
