I’m running an I7 14700K I never get any CPU bottleneck. I’m reaching 99% GPU utilization in every section of the 25 hours I’ve played but man let me tell you sometimes my CPU goes up to like 88°C. It’s insanity. No other game I’ve ever played in the history on this processor has ever gotten anywhere near that hot. Even Alan Wake 2 at 4K with path tracing on never got anywhere near that temp. Which is crazy because the graphics looks straight out of 2015. Even the ray racing looks like first generation RT from the 20 series era
In most recent games RT is too demanding in terms of CPU power. Any CPU below 7800X3D/overclocked 14600K stuggles to provide 60+ fps. Here RT reflections alone decrease framerate by 60-80% when CPU bound. That is just crazy. I remember in older games RT reflections were far less demanding.
Yes true although this game can be quite CPU demanding even with RT off but more so with RT. Not sure if this is an engine thing or implementation. I dont know but one of the biggest impact to CPU performance as far as RT goes in a game here.
I tried ray tracing in Hogwarts Legacy with a 13600KF, and the game was hitching like crazy. After disabling it, I had nearly flawless performance. One of the worst performing games when it comes to RT.
Great video Terra! I'm looking forward to the video about the current CPU demands in modern releases. i can think of BG3's cities, Space Marine 2, Dragon's Dogma 2, DA: The Vailguard and MH Wilds
9800x3d has me sitting at 80-85c avg temps which is insane. The only other thing that raises my cpu this high are cpu benchmarks lol. That said, my gpu util is 99% and cpu util 50-70%. Game is using literally every ounce of PC I have
Im eunning rx7800xt with i5 10400f, 16gb ram. 1440p most set to ultra, rt ambient occlusion, im 90% gpu 100% cpu, 50 to 60 fps. But i check system memory usage, was at 15.x gb! Put in the extra 16gb i had from another pc and now its locked at 60, system memory running at 17.8gb.... Is the first time in 100+ hrs there's no frame drops or stutter.
I made a bit of a mistake with that. It appears selective does seem to turn on Ambient Occlusion to some extent but reflections I have tested it in few different areas and cinematics. It looks and runs the same as OFF
@TerraWare I've seen it turn on in a few areas. My biggest issue with it is that it's too demanding for what it does. RT ultra also makes it more cpu heavy. Raster is really optimized here, but RT needs more time in the oven.
Hi, First of all thank you for creating this video♥ second i have a issue with my game , the moment i launch the game my cpu usage goes to 100% and graphic usage is pretty low, even i change graphic preference to high performance and i did every setting change in main menu but is not make any different. what should i do ? :( CPU : 11900K GPU: 3070 Asus
This is a tech focused look at Dragon Age Veilguard looking at how the game interacts with PC hardware, performance and the many ways you to adjust settings to your desired outcomes. The PC version is solid. Have never had a crash and I adjust settings and tab out all the time as you could imagine, the game also runs very smooth but is unusually CPU heavy that could lead to some framerate issues perhaps with older processors. Overall it's a good PC version.
I do not mind the graphics either and the way they didn't try to make the characters look as realistic as possible (which can age poorly if it doesn't hit). Although I do think there are plenty of characters that look... odd....
Agreed. I like the art style quite a bit, kind of reminds me of Guardians of the Galaxy which is a more timeless approach but character design direction with some of the characters and enemies, Qunari especially they dont look as menacing as they should.
I'm having BSODs while playing Veilguard, I wonder if it is happening because of high CPU temperatures on my Dell laptop... Do you have suggestions of what to do here?
Sunds like your CPU could be overheating but it should throttle down instead of BSOD. Can you see what the temps are? You could try to obviously disable RT, turn the hair strand setting to off and try capping FPS to 60, if it doesnt work try 30 or 40.
@TerraWare I'm playing on medium so I don't have all the RT stuff turned on and I doubt that the hair is turned on as well. I'm trying now to play without a closed lid and I've reduced the DLSS quality, let's see how it goes
@@vladimirtchuiev2218 Well the only way to help the CPU if it is what is causing your issues would be to limit/cap the framerate or try undervolting. I know some laptops can have thermal issues especially with dust build up. Still though it shouldnt blue screen. CPU should just throttle itself. Sorry can't really be much help.
Selective Turns on/off RT per scene, no idea based on what but yeah RT reflection is off in both options in the scenes you've shown, it's not like a lower setting.
As far as reflections I haven't noticed selective to engagage RT, I have tested few different areas and cutscenes like at 8:25. However I was wrong about AO. It looks like selective does engage AO in some way which you can see at 8:25 as well with selective running at slightly lower FPS vs OFF. AO is quite underwhelming in this game though.
I immediately noticed something was wrong when I was playing at 45 Fps on ultra with a 4070 @ 1440p, looked at my utilization and noticed my CPU was pinned at 100% (5600x @ 4.7Ghz) Turned off Hair and Ambient occlusion was at 90 ish. haven't played a game so heavily cpu bound in a while looks like i will be upgrading to a 8 Core in the future
Vram utilization makes this game a problem for my machine. I have a RTX 3080 12gb and 4k screen. Without Ultra textures, for some reason, the game turns into soup. Like texture quality degrades immensely. If I enable RT, even with DLSS balanced, it sometimes surpasses 11-12gb of Vram usage. And heavy frame drops begin. I need to either sacrifice texture quality or turn off RT. I don't care about reflections, but RTAO actually changes the scene drastically. Yes, the ray distance is low, but especially closed sections of the game without RTAO game turns into an Nintendo Switch game. Light leaks from everywhere. I don't know how to find a solution to my problem.
Interesting. I have a 3080Ti I was planning on checking the game out on at some point. So the game drops texture quality on the fly when it runs low on vram? It doesnt stutter?
This is worse on NVidia GPU's, because of the architecture design results in worse driver overhead performance. This is also why AMD GPU's were doing so well at lower resolutions.
The Nvidia driver overhead can depend on the game. There are games where there can be a different in CPU bound scenario and others where its not as much or at all. Generally its more of a noticeable issue or concern when pairing an older weaker CPU with a newer faster class GPU.

Really? Can't say the same. It is an older game, it doesn't place markers guiding the player as well as newer games for example I did have to read some of the quests and find the locations on the map. Like any stylized game people will be divided on the looks and how those looks match with the atmosphere etc.
Doesn't matter if it's the best port in history if the game is complete trash
The game is decent. It has above average combat, good progression system. Its just the writing that is yikes
