Hey Guys!
Thank you for stopping by! Today I have a two-in-one sort of tutorial for you - we are going to be making an EPHEMERA HOLDER together but all the techniques I'll share with you can also be used to make a HARD FABRIC COVER for your JOURNALS.
I have been making journals for over a year now and during this time I have developed a technique of making a durable, sturdy cover for my books that can securely hold my signatures and will not disfigure over time. I am so happy to share the technique with you today, along with my favorite supplies and loads of useful tips and tricks along the way.
The ephemera book that we are making today is not my original idea (many crafters use them) but it is my original method of making one. Storing my ephemera this way helped me to organize it better and use it more, so I highly recommend making a book like this!
To make the process easier to follow, I am listing all the measurements and supplies below so you can go back to them at any point. Also, I am going to put some time stamps to where I show you my current book and talk about what we are going to make differently this time and why, as well as for the supplies and the process itself.

MEASUREMETS:
My current ephemera holder:
- 26 cm or 10 1/4 inches - length of the cover
- 16,5 cm or 6 1/2 inches - width of the cover
- 7,5 cm or 3 inches - width of the spine
The book we are making today:
- 21 cm or 8 1/4 inches - length of the cover
- 15 cm or 5 3/4 inches - width of the cover
- 3 cm or 1 1/4 inches - width of the spine
SUPPLIES:
- 2mm bookboard or heavy card for the cover - two pieces cut as per the measurements above
- lighter card for the spine - cut as per the measurements above
- fabric for the cover
- piece of cardstock to reinforce the cover on the inside
- PVA/wet glue
- paint brush, water and paper towels
- 1 piece of 12x12 paper for the end papers
- 4 pieces of 12x12 paper for the pages
- vellum for pockets
- needle, awl and linen thread for the binding

Loving the longer chatty process videos! A handy tip for curving spines is if you place the book cover face down on your mat with a piece of doweling rod or a thick pencil underneath the spine - any smooth stick would do, just check its the right with for the spine - and roll the spine over and back across the stick with your palms until it takes on a curved shape. If you do this before the glue dries completely then it holds its shape more easily, so I do it before I add end papers or paper the inside of the spine.
This is a fantastic journal cover tutorial for beginners and more experienced crafters. Your explanation is brilliant; no changes required. I think the word that escapes you when describing wrapping the fabric over the cover is EDGE(S). 😉

This video is a life saver. Everyone else uses fabri tac on their fabric cover and i cant seem to find a fabri tac. So grateful for this video 🙏🏻
I know! Can't find it either or when I see it on Amazon it is so expensive. But PVA or any wet white glue that dries clear works great, I've used it for all my covers so far :) Thank you for watching dear and I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Big hugs xx

This is such a great idea and a great tutorial! A 90/14 microtex or topstitch needle might solve your problem with sewing through two layers of acetate and heavy cardstock. Even a cheap sewing machine should be able to handle it, with the right needle.

Hi Dixie, The original ephemera holder was done by Rachel of "Roxy Creations", then an even better version by Gayle Agostinelli, who stated in her tutorial that she was inspired by Roxy Creations, then Martha Manigross who perfected it, also stated in her tutorials that she was inspired by Gayle Agostinelli & she also sells them in her Etsy shop as well as Bella & Grey from Instagram, but they don't do RUclips videos, they were inspired by the original creator, Roxy Creations & even sent her one of theirs which it was absolutely gorgeous! Anyway, that's the story on the ephemera holders or folios, how it came to be, who the original creator is & how the inspiration went from Rachel to Gayle, from Gayle to Martha, from Rachel again to Bella & Grey, but don't know which one of them inspired Martyna. thank you for a great tutorial, so straightforward and explained very well! i've had problems trimming at the corners, too short, too long but yours makes sense and it is the first time ive seen a 'rounded' cut', its usually straight and i am inspired to try... once i get my honey to cut out the cardboard pieces! :) tfs!
