Mavis Staples is a LEGEND. She and her sisters and dad sang together as The Staples Singers for a long time (Pop Staples himself is a legend in his own right), and were all involved with the Civil Rights Movement in the US. Mavis knew all those people they were singing about-Nina Simone, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Curtis Mayfield, Joni Mitchell, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, all those folks. She knew Martin Luther King. So when you hear her sing, “And I could cry power / Power has been cried by those stronger than me” she is singing on behalf of all of those souls, but also know that she herself is one of the people who has fought for justice and power for the marginalized. She is one of our elders.
“Nina cried power” is also a direct reference to Nina Simone’s song Sinnerman, so if you haven’t heard that one, it is well worth your time. (They play some of it in an episode of Sherlock, too.)

Thanks so much for doing this one!!! I so love how into the music you get :-)
Hozier is such a talented musician, and I appreciate musicians who have a positive message in their music - this one just hit me when it first came out. The addition of Mavis Staples was pure genius, given the song's message. This dear lady is 81, and has been a force in the gospel, rock, and blues music scenes, as well as being a civil rights activist, since her teens. She is truly remarkable :-)

I don't think you can get 2 people any different than Mavis Staples and Hozier. One is a legendary gospel/soul singer who is 5 foot tall. The other is an Irish young man who is 16 inches taller. They are musical kindred spirits and the love and respect between them is palpable. Both work for the rights of all people and reflect that in their music.

Mavis Staples is the lead singer of The Staple Sisters. They have the iconic song from the 1970s called "I'll Take You There" that will knock your socks off! I know you have heard some version of that song.

I'm so glad to finally see people reacting to this song more! A small dive into the lyrics for you "It's not the waking it's the rising" meaning it's not enough to be " woke" we must rise up and demand something be done✊ perfect song for what's happening in the US right now

Great!!! If you are going to continue with hozier I recommend “almost(sweet music)” the original video or “work song” also original vid. His voice is so smooth. Mavis was kicking ass all over that studio.

Love, love "Work Song," especially! That was how I discovered Hozier originally ..... thought it was the Cannonball Adderley song that I remembered my dad always playing for me, lol! You can really hear the blues influences in Hozier's writing in it, I think it's part of why his music is so unique :-)

hozier always does things right. his voice makes me feel warm & safe.
if yr into those deep, rich notes consider finding some of kyla jade's performances from the voice a couple of years back.
she was, of course, robbed of a deserved win at the end of the season, but damn, she delivered some insane performances on there...i recommend her renditions of "one night only" (what an epic song!), "let it be", & "you don't own me".

If you want to hear Mavis Staples at the top of her game, listen to her version of Stephen Foster, "Hard Times" ruclips.net/video/-ixbah9u234/видео.html Guaranteed to blow you away.

Disturbed "The sound of Silence" ruclips.net/video/u9Dg-g7t2l4/видео.html. Apparently Paul Simon himself loved it. No further endorsement necessary. Original will always be a classic song of its time. This timeless song was waiting for Disturbed's definitive version (like Nick Cave's definitive 'Hallelujah'). You won't be disappointed.
