I assumed by the title that this was going 2Ba gripe, but it was refreshingly honest & very accurate. I gave you a thumbs up & I'm still going ahead with a 4x4 F350 extended 4 door flat bed truck camper. Either the 4 Seasons poptop or the Nimbl Evolution V1 XP camper. Your list didn't deter me - it inspired me. Without challenges & adversity we wouldn't be the enthusiastic Adventurers that we already are. I'm a bachelor, I'm sincerely through with women, I love camping, fishing, shooting, bushcrafting, cooking & the solitude of intentional isolation. Can't wait to begin! Thanx 4 your input! Ciao:)!!

As an avid truck camper I don't think you gave them the credit they deserve. Obviously the key to happiness is to carefully match the truck and camper for the application. We are about 800 lbs below our GVWR (and rear axle rating) fully loaded and about 900 lbs below our payload capacity in a 3/4 ton truck. Life is simple and comfortable with the addition of a Hellwig rear bar and airbags for additional support. We average 12.8 mpg with a gas engine and get 45K miles on a set of tires :-) And unlike the overland types, I can remove our camper in less than 15 minutes and have a truck to use as a utility vehicle. Also, I might add that we have a total of $47K invested in both the 2016 truck and 2018 camper combined.

I want to get into more dispersed camping on forest and BLM land, was wondering how often you two use the 4WD on your vehicle? Would a 2wd Fuso truck (swapping the rear double tires for a single) get me down some fire roads and into quiet nature? Do you feel the 4x4 capability is essential to your adventures?

    • @outliersoverland

Depends on the trails. I’ve felt I was really getting out there and would then see a passenger car going the opposite direction. Not all blm is the same, start with what you have and start on easy trails, then once you reach the capability look to find something that meets your use case.

These are not reason not to buy a camper, that's just clickbait. These are simply things anyone should always consider before making any camper purchase. In other words, know the type of person you are and the type of travel you want to do before committing to a major expensive camper purchase. We're all different, so doing some research and soul searching up front will ensure that you get the vehicle that fits your personal needs.

The camper to heavy for a 1 ton dually? Go to the f450-550 or 4500-5500 cab and chassis. Speaking of tires if you want weight ratings go with the continental mpt 81 but if you want longevity go with the Goodyear military tire (I can't remember the name of the Goodyear sorry)

We have the brand new Palomino soft side 1500, and it's well within the range of my 1 ton. The beauty of these pop ups, is the low center of gravity and profile. We also have a modular home of 1200ft, another converted horse feeding barn (second gym!), a tack room, a well house and tank, a 33' Pace Arrow RV under restoration, a custom, lifted f150 with a Jasper Motor and many upgrades, an f350 dually with a hi-pro turbocharger and many extras. A Lexus RX 330 (best car we've ever owned), several bicycles and two very over the top motorcycles! Two huge bully dogs (our babies) and lots of guns strategically placed here and there. There are pop up camper shells on the market that bolt to the bed like a traditional truck cap. The ones I have found in my research so far are Go Fast Campers, Super Pacific Switchback, Snap Outfitters Treehouse, Four Wheel Campers Model M, Hiatus Campers, and three different models from AT Overland. Depending on which one you go with you are looking at spending between $7k to 15K just for the shell. The sleeping area is basically an integrated roof top tent that pops up when you are ready to set up camp and you access it from inside the bed of the truck instead of climbing up a narrow ladder outside the vehicle. You can build out the inside of the shell however you wish to customize it for your needs. The only one I found that the pop up portion is hard sided is the Hiatus Camper. Right now (Aug 2021) a lot of these manufacturers have long lead times to start production ranging from Spring time 2022 to Fall of 2023.

For maneuverability we wouldn’t want to pull a trailer.
A 4x4 Econoline conversation is great, the mass produced RV part would be the weak link. They are drafty, not insulated and low quality. There are a few exceptions, but those come from boutique builders.
      Hope this helps.
      Thanks for watching.

So the first thing you ask the dealership. How much are tires?
    2nd thing, what’s the GVWR?
If the math is good you got yourself a off road Camper.

In love with your videos!! Your info is always so helpful!! And not that we plan on going all hardcore 4wheelin' ----but we do wish, God willing, to go a bit further than a regular RV can. We have the 2020 Thor Magnitude XG32 4x4 Super C on a Ford F550 chassis. So far, we love it. Looks like this one, click link---> ruclips.net/video/cNIeupbN5wE/видео.html (except our interior valance toppers & master bed cover/pillowcase combo are different).

That is a beautiful rig. At one point in time Host made a Super C like this. Beef up the suspension and tires and you can go almost anywhere.
