Oscar®-nominee Dorothy Dandridge sings 'Dat's Love' in this clip from Carmen Jones, available on BFI Blu-ray from 19 September shop.bfi.org.uk...
Dorothy Dandridge, whose vibrant performance resulted in the first Oscar nomination for an African-American actress in a leading role, stars as the beautiful temptress Carmen Jones. In one of the sexiest performances ever seen on the big screen - she seduces the handsome GI Joe (Harry Belafonte) away from his sweetheart (Olga James), but after she tires of him and takes up with a heavyweight prizefighter (Joe Adams), she only succeeds in triggering Joe’s tragic revenge.
With an all-black cast this Oscar nominated version of Bizet’s opera Carmen, directed by Otto Preminger, features an iconic soundtrack from Oscar Hammerstein, including songs such as ‘Beat Out Dat Rhythm on a Drum’, and was voluptuously shot in Cinemascope Technicolor.

I don’t like how some people say that Dorothy was the “black marlin Monroe “ haha I mean why not the other way around? Or better why do we have to compare? both ladies are stunning! But I feel like we are taking away Dorothy’s uniqueness and beauty when we mention or compare her to marylin. Can we just appreciate both actresses beauty and talented and not have to say that?
My English is horrible but I hope you get me.
I Do ND I Too Understand The Comparison Issue With America Is Weird We All Exist As One
@blue star, Americans are very self-absorbed people. It is hard for them to look outside their own box.
Exactly, Dorothy was perfect as she was and so was Marilyn, I honestly think Dorothy was a better actress and singer than her though, Marilyn's acting seemed too stilted in my opinion.
Also, Dorothy was a better actress than Marilyn Monroe.
@@jennifer5512 absolutely but she wasn't only a better actress than Marilyn but she was also a better singer, Dorothy didn't sing in Carmen Jones but she had a lovely voice.
Stop calling her the black Marilyn Monroe she was Dorothy dandrige she had her own legacy
I can't explain how beautiful this woman was. Words don't do her justice. Perfection of Gods creation.
Beautiful
Voice.
OH YES!❤❤❤❤
She was beyond beautiful.
@@clairduffy60 Dorothy could sing but, that's actually mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne's voice dubbed.
I wish to God she was still alive
Dorothy Dandridge was one of the most beautiful women to grace planet earth.
I totally agree.
She had everything, looks, talent, charisma, she had it all.
And an incredible voice.
@JimmyJoezation She did but she was actually dubbed in this movie by Martha Horne, and Henry Belafonte was dubbed by Le Vern Hutcherson. They both had good voices but the studio wanted it to sound more like the original opera.
You conveniently left out the White genes.
But had the worst taste for husbands and partners.
She had No Peace, she had a sick child 💔
For those saying “she was the black Marilyn Monroe “ nah Marilyn Monroe was the white Dorothy dandridge. If only Dorothy was born a few decades later 😩 but she is still a pioneer that paved the way for us in Hollywood man or woman
Also they had to keep their friendship a secret not only interracial relationships was taboo back then, But just a white actress being friends with the black actress was also a frowned upon they look so similar because they were good friends Dorothy Dandridge taught Marilyn Monroe a lot of things
how if marilyn monroe herself said she idolized gene harlow and even hired the same woman who bleached her hair, to bleach her own . period .
All that beautiful melanin in one movie!
roter13 Yes Lawd!!!!!💯
This was a direct result of the Hays Code, which banned interracial couples in films. This severely limited the careers of black actors as they couldn’t play lead roles in most mainstream, big budget movies.
Yes! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Have you any idea how racist and offensive that comment is? Think about it.
Her entrance and this song, when I first saw the film, I was thinking "now that's an actress becoming a star."
What a shame that she didn’t get very far. I think her reputation was her downfall. Like most HW actresses she had a fe good films and the roles stopped coming (Gloria Graham Hedy Lamar Joan Crawford,). She could have been huge
@@Nina5144 Yes, being a black woman in Hollywood definitely made her "reputation" the reason why she didn't go very far.
@Tim Dewano That took place 40 years after her passing. If it wasn't for the 1999 tv movie with Halle Berry, she wouldn't even be known today. She got an Oscar nomination, yes, but that doesn't mean she wasn't treated like a Black woman in Hollywood still is.
@@Nina5144 Her reputation? Marilyn was sleeping with the damn president and she was still accepted
@@Nina5144 not sure what out of the ordinary‘reputation’ you are referring to. The system, especially at this time, was particularly cutthroat, and one had to push others out of the way . DD was no more, no less. He beauty , talent and her especially her Color were the stumbling blocks for the system, for many years, and even today.
Not possible to be any more ELEGANT than that-PERIOD !
A flawless beauty
She was 11/10! Simply beautiful and extraordinarily talented!
In 1961 Dorothy played in SHOW BOAT at the summer theater in Dayton Ohio where I was an apprentice. She was even more beautiful in real life than she was on the screen. Too bad she never fulfilled her potential, and died so young, alas.
This movie illustrates the depth of racial apartheid in the USA in the early 50's
This woman so talented could not stay in the hotels in real life where she performed at!
The issue came to a head when federal troops were needed to allow an African American child attend a segregated school in one of the southern states in the early 60's during the Kennedy administration
Yes, Ruby Bridges. She integrated her elementary school in Louisana
It was happening far later than this. I remember learning on the Netflix Quincy Jones documentary that it was Frank Sinatra who had to put his foot down for Quincy Jones and the band to be able to stay in the same Hotel where the show was that they would be playing along with him.
@seth f sure have moved to blm riots in the capitals cities, the USA is flaking as I type led by a cipher posing as the President
@@petershaw2566 Tell me, do you watch videos with Black actors because rage is the only way you can get a boner?
"....during the Kennedy Administration."
No. During the Eisenhower Administration.
Oh, that's right. Most of us went to government schools (i.e. Democrat party indoctrination centers) where the "social studies" lessons don't include those facts that are inconvenient to the prevailing agenda. ....Like that Tammany Hall (late 19th century New York City) was a DEMOCRAT political machine. Or that the KKK was a DEMOCRAT-affiliated organization of thugs (like Anti-Fa and BLM are the Democrat Party-backed thugs of today). ....Or that almost all of our racist policies from ante-bellum slavery to Jim Crow segregation to Affirmative Action (post-1964) to the officially-backed "whites are evil" indoctrination of today in our Democrat-controlled schools were put in place or maintained (often with violent force) by Democrats.
It was the Democrat party, in the southern states, that resisted integration; and it was a Republican federal administration which enforced judicial rulings to de-segregate the tax payer-supported public schools.
....But I'm sure NONE of this was ever brought to your attention by your leftist, Democrat-affiliated unionized teachers!!
If you told me the best rendition of Habanera was sung in English I'd scoff and not believe it but Dorothy Dandridge is so utterly fabulous that its possible!
She's dubbed, though.
Yeah it was Marilyn Horne who sang her vocals. Dorothy Dandridge was a singer also but she wasn't familiar with singing opera so they dubbed over her in this movie. Not many people seem to realize that, she's still great in this role though.
@@gulfstream8123 oh wow, no sh#t..... I totally didnt know that. just looked up marylyn Horne. she's great. thanks for that.
She was so pretty
Beautiful
Absolutely iconic!
Aman Chaudhary you got that right
Omg everybody in this scene are beautiful asf
Rest in peace Harry Belafonte and Dorothy Dandridge.
Most gorgeous woman ever period!
Dorothy dandridge. A beautiful and tragic star
Harry Belafonte was so handsome and D. Dandridge was Gorgeous I wonder if they had a relationship off screen their chemistry was everything in this film!
@shanicebell8318 I think they did. They had a lot of on screen chemistry.
Harry Belonfante stated they never had a relationship. They were simply good friends
Doubt Harry was with Dorothy. Love him but he was only into white women, shame shame. These bm are a shame to the race oh well 🤷♀️ Even Etta James who was biracial wasn't white enough for him, said she couldn't help his career. Sydney Poitiers, MLK, shame
Halle and Beyoncé played the role of Carmen well. But Dorothy Dandridge will always be my favorite Carmen Jones 😍!
When did Halle play Carmen?
@@TrangPakbaby in 1999 HBO released the Carmen Jones biographical/ drama movie. Halle Berry starred in the leading role as Carmen Jones. She won an Emmy and Golden Globe for her performance.
I can watch this over and over again.
Truly
The way Cindy Lou was cutting her eyes at her 😂
Wonderful movie one the greats with a Stella cast and wow the timeless beautiful terrific Actress Dorothy Dandridge. She wasn’t here very long but she sure made a impact and lasting impression. Definitely made her mark
I saw Carmen Jones at the TCM film festival on the big screen. She was gorgeous, & gave a vibrant, intelligent performance. She was an immense talent.
i can see why halle played her, but janet would've been a good choice too. I see a lot of Janet when i look at Dorothy
You're so right. Including that hint of sweetness & sassiness in the personality. Janet would have been excellent
@one sided loyalty is for suckas yes but Janet can add richness to a character
1000% agree.
Why couldn't a white star play black Carmen, though?
@@pix046 A white actress playing in an all-black ensemble? This was 1953. You couldn't mix a movie cast pairing whites and black as equals. They were going for a crossover audience, and white people down south would NEVER sit through a love interest between a white woman and black man.
You really should pick up a history book or two.
Too too bad as beautiful as she is no 1 ever truly loved her... I know the feeling too well r.i.l angel
I wake up this morning with this exact song in my head and for the life of me I couldn't remember where I heard it until it hit me so glad I could find it 😁
A beautiful friend of mine, an ex partner and I got in touch after 24 years and she has reminded me of this wonderful tune tonight. Lynne.
I love watching this movie.
Dorothy Dandridge was so talented and beautiful. Her personal life was full of heartache and she died so young.
Still one of my favorite scenes ever, completely in love with everything about dorothy
Everything about this lady was a goddess of art turned into a real queen
Absolutely gorgeous! God rest her soul.
She was so gorgeous. I wish she got her props when she was alive, R.I.P
Fav scene in the movie!! A classic beauty she was!!! 💕💕💕
she looks more like ashanti from murda inc.
I remember seeing this somewhere as a kid in the 90's. I love it so much, I'm glad I found it again! So amazing!
A beautiful specimen Dorothy.
0:08 that man just smiling and looking at her butt XD

Dorothy Dandrige what a great talent Carmen Jones with Harry Belfonate. She was elected for a award for best actress.Gone to soon.Hollywood was segrated back then it probably took its toll on her.RIP
Gorgeous woman! 💖💖💖💖
Wow this was beautiful, I just watch the movie this gave me chills , she was a actives , a good girl that always dream of love on and off the screen
Dottie was so beautiful any man's fantasy female attraction will make it more iconic
She played the role of Carmen Jones too bad she didn't receive a Oscar nomination for that role
Samuel Griffin she did get nominated she just didn’t win. In fact , she’s the first Black woman ever nominated for Best Actress.

Just a small matter - Dorothy Dandridge didn't do the singing. The voice is Marilyn Horne
A beautiful women. Inspiring
Love her!!
She literally was absolutely beautiful. Omg Harold Nicholas bagged him one.
She did Carmen so well done
Now this is black beauty ❤ 1950s
I felt so sorry for cute, sweet little CindyLou. She had just as good a figure, and was hours away from marrying Joe, who loved her, but noone could compete with Carmen.
Love her!-tab
Interesting Fact: Dorothy is not singing in this film. Her singing voice was dubbed. In the movie starring Halle Berry, there is a clip where she is on the phone talking about this movie right after she gets the part and she mentions an opera singer hired to do her movie singing for her...that unnamed singer was Marilyn Horne who was just 19 years old at the time.
Halle Berry's singing was dubbed by Wendi Williams. She is a member of the 90's R&B singing group "For Real."
@@curtismichael4703, ok but in real life, Marilyn Horne did indeed dub the voice of Dorothy Dandridge in the movie, it was in 1954 and it was Marilyn's first major professional engagement. She was 20 when the movie was released.
@@speddygonzales5 You're right but I wasn't trying to correct you at all. I was a fan of the singing group "For Real" back in the 90's. When I heard that one of the girls would be dubbing the singing for Halle in "Introducing Dorothy Dandridge" I couldn't wait to watch. Just wanted to add to the trivia is all.
@@curtismichael4703 Oh ok, sorry I misunderstood. :)

Why Hasn't This Gotten More Views?, Seriously,This Movie Is Classic Remake of A Classic!

Marilyn Monroe wanted to be like her.
Beautiful 🌹
She was a real knock out.
Just beautiful! Classic beauty and elegance. Sometimes I wish I could have been alive back then. Then I remember Jim Crow and say hell no! I’ll keep watching video.
Dorothy Dandridge is ranked with Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn as my favorite actresses of Old School Hollywood. Dandridge was the Black equivalent of Marilyn Monroe because she had that similar sex appeal and was popular during that same time period.
And Sadly both Dandridge and Monroe died from premature substance induced deaths.
@@eamonndeane587 Exactly.

I dressed up like her and did a play in middle school to this I was watching the Beyoncé movie and I can’t find this movie anywhere my fav fav version 😍
Con todo respeto para Dorothy ella merece ser llamaba la Marilyn Monroe negra...era muy hermosa y talentosa...fue llamada la Venus negra
Beautiful. Lady. Good. Actress
D.D. was so beautiful.
Beautiful
Rest easy, Mr. Belafonte.
When black women had class. What a voice. What a face! RIP, Dorothy. Your legacy remains.
So true.
I agree Dorothy Dandridge was a great actress but that’s not actually her voice. Both Dorothy and Henry Belafonte was dubbed by Marilyn Horne and Le Vern Hutcherson, because while they were good singers they weren’t trained in opera
Que mujer tan divina como me encanta.
Thanks for being fabulous
Thank you so lovely
Dorothy is amazing and don't compare her to Marilyn who is also amazing and they were friends. Marilyn went through a lot in that industry and she's still being used, profited off, like Dorothy in a way. And Halle played a beautiful Dorothy. Her and Harry were gorgeous in this film, everyone was beautiful but the character played him, made him beat up his superior and run from the army only to abandon him for the rich boxer who'd been after her. Because she thought she was going to die so she wanted to live life. He klled her in a jealous rage when she wouldn't come back because he'd lost everything for her and she was just done
I wish I could've married her she's a real 10 a true dime in every since flawless !!!!!
Dorothy je t'aime!
R.I.P MR. HARRY BALFONTE❤🙏🏾🕊
Prettier than Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn was way prettier
And she was a much more natural beauty.
@@Big_body_bitch_with_an_opinion Dorothy was gorgeous, and naturally so.
@@asanta2023 yet they’re making a biopic over Marilyn and not dorthy?😂 Marilyn was way prettier don’t nobody know dorthy she was kinda ugly tbh I would not wife that crack head up respectfully.
I prefer Dorothy’s looks but there’s no need to compare them, they’re both attractive women. If any Marilyn should be mentioned, it should Marilyn Horne, who dubbed for Dorothy in this scene.
Since the fact that Carmen Jones was based on an all African American stage play, there was no need to cast any white actors or show any white people in it. They wanted to make a movie with an all black cast in it.
Wow shes amazing
I love this movie! One of the best👍👍
This is awesome.
If one views the videos on RUclips of Marilyn Monroe, you'll see that Dorothy Dandridge's name is never mentioned by anyone in the comment section. Nobody says she's a white Dorothy Dandridge. Nobody says she's my Dorothy Dandridge. Marilyn Monroe's race or ethnicity are never ever mentioned. I think it's unfortunate that we cannot honor Dorothy Dandridge in the same way. What does Dorothy Dandridge have to do with Marilyn Monroe other than the fact that they were both Beautiful American actresses?
Yes I don’t understand it either. They’re both talented and attractive in different ways. There’s no need for people to keep comparing them.
I caught this movie with my dad as a young boy, I wanna say at the 'Reseda Theater in Reseda Ca while my mom was visiting my aunt close by in Van Nuys & it seems like yesterday
God gave us perfection, and her name is Dorothy Dandridge.
