I walk through the neighborhood of Jamaica, Queens. This section is known to be a major shopping district, and comparable to Brooklyn's Fulton Street. It is also a major transit hub, with connections to numerous buses, NYC Subway Lines on the E, F, J, and Z trains, Airtrain to JFK Airport, and the Long Island Railroad.
    From Wikipedia:
"Jamaica is a middle-class neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens. It is mainly composed of a large commercial and retail area, though part of the neighborhood is also residential. Jamaica is bordered by Hollis to the east; St. Albans, Springfield Gardens, Rochdale Village to the southeast; and South Jamaica to the south; Richmond Hill and South Ozone Park to the west; Briarwood to the northwest; and Kew Gardens Hills, Jamaica Hills, and Jamaica Estates to the north.
Jamaica was settled under Dutch rule in 1656 in New Netherland as Rustdorp. Under British rule, Jamaica became the center of the "Town of Jamaica". Jamaica was the first county seat of Queens County, holding that title from 1683 to 1788, and was also the first incorporated village on Long Island. When Queens was incorporated into the City of Greater New York in 1898, both the Town of Jamaica and the Village of Jamaica were dissolved, but the neighborhood of Jamaica regained its role as county seat. Today, some locals group Jamaica's surrounding neighborhoods into an unofficial Greater Jamaica, roughly corresponding to the former Town of Jamaica."

Action Kid thank you for setting the record straight regarding the origin of the geographical name, Jamaica. Many people - even many New Yorkers and Queens residents - mistakenly believe that it came from the Caribbean population living there. Thank you for straightening that out

For those who are from Queens. You can see that Jamaica Avenue is being gentrified. The new high rise buildings on Archer, the new Burlington and H&M there. Jamaica center or to us natives "THE AVE " is no longer the mom and pop, hustle man, let's make a deal shopping area as it was in the days of old. They're making it to look like Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn. Five more years it will look like Willimsburg. I'm just saying.

Maybe he can save up $400 to see a thearpist so he can deal with being afraid of walking around a dangerous neighborhood. I mean everyone knows that it is abnormal to be scared of wonderful dangerous neighborhoods. Baby steps first try the Hamptons then work for yourself up to neighborhoods like the south Bronx.

you just passed my old house at 53:09 where the quality carpet place is, that was my building, and you passed an important landmark the Afrikan Poetry theater at 52:49 alot of famous poets and authors has passed through those doors. its so quiet around there now, it use to be popping. Ive seen jamaica ave change so much over the years, i pretty much remember what each store use to be on the ave, thanks for the tour, i shot my music video there a year ago. i use to catch that Q31 to bayside HS, rufus Park use to have a canon in front of that house. Gertz plaza mall is gone, Jam master Jay studio from Run dmc was on merrick Blvd, i remember when roti express first opened their doors, Mays on 169th before it became wertheimers and before whatever it is now. good memories

Left NY over 50 years ago. Thoroughly enjoyed this Doesn't look like the Jamaica Ave I knew. I noticed he walked by the Tabernacle church. Wish he had looked up because that was probably the old Valencia Theater I used to go to. It was a beautiful building designed by an architect who designed only 7 of these. I went to one in Kalamazoo, MI and it was so much like the Valencia but now used for concerts. Thanks for the memories!

The single family homes on Jamaica Av. & 179 St are over 100 yrs old. It was predominately Guyanese community. You can tell by the ornamental iron work fences. Further up 179 St around 88 Ave & across Hillside Ave (Jamaica Estates Was yuppie Ville.
If you ever get a chance stop into the Queens historical society. You might run into some old timers who would love to relieve the history of the various parts of Queens with you.

We lived at Main St. & Union Tpke. which you can see on the map at the start in the upper left corner, just to the right of where it shows the Kew Motor Inn, technically the Kew Garden Hills neighborhood. I went to Hillcrest HS. It was crazy back then, but also a lot of good memories. The hustle was real!

Lived here during my high school and college years. The Q6 bus was the worst. Most of the time I walked home from the train station. When the bus did show up it was jam packed. Sometimes I even had my ghettoblaster with me. Had 3 different ones. My mother worried everytime I left the house with it but I always came back in one piece with all my stuff.
