Prescribed burning is a land management tool with countless benefits, from reducing fuel loading and risk of a catastrophic wildfire, to clearing out unwanted vegetation, invasive species, pests, etc. It also recycles nutrients back into the soil, creating an environment with native new growth and abundant grazing opportunities for wildlife.
In this episode of “Ask a Forester,” District Forester Connor Murnane walks us through the process and procedure of conducting a prescribed burn at the W.G. Jones State Forest outside of Conroe, Texas. This area’s urban wildland interface offers some interesting challenges for prescribed burning, and is a good demonstration of the resources and effort that goes into prescribed burning.

As a lifelong marine firefighter I can say Texas A&M has the best training in the country. I have been to most of them.

Wow, that District Forester was so young. Our's were always middle aged or older. Remember, ONLY YOU... can start forest fires. I miss doing prescribed burns for 20+ years. Always used a 50/50 mix. and removed the check valve ball and seat and screen. The Drip torch worked so much better and never clogged or went out and was good for using on a 4 wheeler or vehicle. Best way to use a drip torch/backfire pot.

John I wish we could still do that but the NFPA would have an brain aneurysm if we did that as firefighters in 2022

@@itsyaboimat2393 I never told anyone except my few partners. Even my super and others remarked how great my pot worked. I never let on. They never took it apart to inspect my pot either. Why would they. Don't ask ... don't tell. Never an incident in over 15+ years doing it that way. 😁 No one has to know. Only a trusted few.

I did 8yrs of fire prevention and participated in controlled burns, seems like a lot of these wildfires in SoCal could have been prevented. The Thomas fire almost burnt down my town wtf. Peace.
