- Mangrove Snapper (Officially Gray Snapper, also called Mango Snapper) are one of my favorite species of fish to catch. Not only are they fun but they are one of the best tasting snapper species. I think they are better than Red Snapper. In this video we will show you some key tips to catching mangrove snapper such as catching the right bait, what a good spot in Tampa Bay Looks like, what tackle to use, when to fish, and how to fish. If you exactly duplicate what you see in this video you will catch mangrove snapper guaranteed.
Mangrove snapper can be found in very shallow water all the way out to depths well over 100 feet deep. They populate all kinds of areas such as mangrove shorelines, docks and sea walls, jetties, wrecks, and reefs. They are usually easy to catch if you know just a few tricks. When mangrove snapper are feeding on the bottom, they are less leader shy. When they are feeding up in the water column, sometimes they can very picky about what they eat, so you'll have to be more stealthy. Inside Tampa Bay you can mostly use the same rods and reels that you use for snook and reds. The most you'll need is a 5000 size reel and medium heavy rod. Most of the snapper you'll catch out in the Tampa Bay Skyway Shipping Channel are from 12 to 16 inches, with fish 16 to 20 inches not uncommon. Sometimes you'll find a school of only the big ones. Ocassionally fish as big as 25 inches are caught. There is also a growing population of Red Snapper in Tampa Bay.

Awesome video as always Capt Joe!! Those were some really nice snapper. Hope to see u out there one of these days.
Thanks man, its so cool to get them chummed up to the surface and see how hungry they are. Best fish lately are about 16 inches. Trying to get some 20 inchers soon.
Picked up a couple tips... Thank You and keep up the good work!!!
Great! I sure will.
I'm just here to support a good person and learn some fishing, I live in the mountain in GA, do some trout fishing but enjoy watching saltwater fishing. Thanks for all you do for others god bless
Thank you for watching and commenting :)
I love Captain Ed, done everything for my boat also. Great guy.
He sure is.
After watching this video, I had Captain Ed install a new Minn Kota trolling motor on my new boat this past Saturday. He did an awesome job, and completed the job in a few hours. His rates are also very reasonable. He will now be my go to marine mechanic for all my electronic boating needs. Thanks!!!
Ed is the man! So glad you found him through my channel! I'm sure you mentioned the snapper fishing trip.
Another great video!! It's always great to have a boat mechanic that you can trust!! And the way u describe what you are using is perfect. Plus the fishing was fantastic!!
It sure is great having an ace installer you can count on. Glad the video was helpful for you :) the snapper bite has been real good lately.

Head First Fishing you’re welcome 🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣
Great Video. Never fished the bay want to give it a try. Ever use a chum block?
Yes they do work.
Love the snapper video captain joe! I need to get out there & break out my conventionals they are collecting dust in the garage lol
The bite has been good get after it!
You should maybe do a fishing video at St. Pete's Downtown pier! It just opened!
On it!
Now that’s what I call a good day fishing. Great video
It was a good day! The snapper unfortunately didn't stay up as long as I'd hoped but I'm glad they did show themselves so you can see the chumming working. Cool last name BTW.
Buenas capturas mi amigo
Muchas Gracias, Senor.
Dude do you charter? I like how you explain things.

My man!
Hey man thanks for always watching the videos I appreciate it.
I’m just fixin to get my first boat. Is hanging out on edge of ship channel not frowned upon? Do you anchor or set spot lock in desired locations when on edge of channel?
Spotlock trolling motors is best so you can get out of the way of large vessels and ships.
Appreciate the info your sharing - that's a great area to fish.
But the background music is incredibly distracting, so this viewer won't be back
Nice video... do you ever send a chum block in a cage to the bottom when you are chumming for mangos?
I have dropped chum blocks with some success.
Someone's been watching Tampa Bay Fishing Channel and Show me the snapper! ;)
Haha yes they are a great source of information. Great guys. I've been perfecting my craft for several years now, and I'm on the snapper regularly.
Hey i may go tarpon fishing in a week or two do you think right of the bottom of fort desoto like right where the ship channel starts would be a good spot. And i was planning on using blue crabs and white bait for them.
They are there sometimes.
Looked like a knocker rig setup there for a moment. Would you choose that over a pinch weight rig?
I usually have both at the ready.
You think chumming would be effective in the shallows also?I have pretty good luck with mangoes. But never tried this
Works in most depths.
Dude would love to learn how you do this
Lol its in the video.
me n son just talked about snapper time at st pete or skyway fri night!
Cool are you going to give it a try?
@@HeadFirstFishing i used to catch 22 inchers at st pete pier back in 1999 .. hope they are open.. or skyway it is after work, not sure of other snapper spots from land besides picnic island which i dont like too much.
22 inches is biiiig!
@@HeadFirstFishing too bad st Pete is full.. skyway max 50 cars and wait line is 15 cars.. went to south pier and same.
ended up at johns pass next to gators and son got 1 snapper at 10:45 pm
what do you mean when the tide get slow when is on your pick?
When the tide is slow or slack the snapper will come up off the bottom. When the tide is moving quickly they hug the bottom.
Where are you in the ship channel (if you're willing to share that)?
Haha no sir.
Thank you for the video. Do you have any advice for the area you cast net for bait?Any concern to look for with your boat by that south side of edmont key? Rocks? Depth? Sub here. Thank you!
Hey, most of the fishing piers and major structure holds bait. The bait at the rocks is sporadic but summer time is usually good.
@@HeadFirstFishing thank you for the reply. Keep them coming
Did you give the gentleman some fish
All of it
Do you guys bleed them out before you ice them?
Usually not, I do bleed the kingfish though.
I found a mess yesterday. I was only in 10' of water. I was chumming the piss out of them with chopped fry. They wouldn't bite. I managed to catch 3 and when I cleaned them their stomachs were empty. I was freelining with a 1 circle and 20# fluoro...
Maybe try a smaller but steady amount of chum.
You can also downsize to 15 lb line.
I live in Arcadia
Cool, ever fish this way? @headfirstfishing
Would you care to share the coordinates of that spot?
I would not. 🙂
slap a snapper! :D
Straight slapping em
