Due to its location, Afghanistan has been a hub of diverse cultures, prompting one historian to dub it the ‘roundabout of the ancient world’. Those who settled included the Persians, under Darius the Great (522-486 BCE); - and the Greeks, led by Alexander the Great (356-323 BCE). - Many present-day towns are built on Greek foundations. - A Buddhist civilization flourished from the late first century CE, its kings reigning in Bamiyan until the end of the 10th century. - During the 7th century, the Rashidun Caliphate Arabs entered the territory after defeating the Sassanian Persians in Nihawand, strengthened - as the Turks gained power in Iran, Afghanistan and India and the beginning of Islam in the region.

The spread of Islam in Afghanistan in the 7th and 8th centuries was associated with significant military conflicts. Arab armies under the leadership of the Umayyad and later the Abbasid Caliphate conducted several campaigns in the region. Here are some details:Arab Conquests: The first major military campaigns began in the early 7th century under the command of Khalid ibn al-Walid and Amr ibn al-As. These conquests continued under the Umayyads, who aimed to gain control over the strategically important area.Battles and Sieges: There were numerous battles and sieges, especially in the cities of Herat, Balkh, and Kabul. These conflicts were often bloody and led to significant destruction and losses.Forced Conversions and Oppression: In some cases, local rulers and populations were given the choice of either converting to Islam or facing consequences, which often included coercion, dispossession, or death. These measures were frequently applied, particularly during the early phase of the conquests.Long-term Resistance: Despite the initial violence, many local communities offered substantial resistance. In some areas, it took several decades for Islam to be fully accepted, with some regions clinging to their traditional religions even longer.Missionary Activities: Alongside the military actions, there were also peaceful missionaries spreading Islam. These contributed to the gradual cultural and religious assimilation, partly alleviating the initial violence. The combination of military violence and peaceful missionary work ultimately led to Islam becoming dominant in Afghanistan.

Bizarre that there’s no mention of Zoroastrianism, considering Balkh was the epicenter of the faith for many years, and Kandahar itself was home to various Zoroastrian sects. Pashto itself is a descendant of Avestan, the liturgical language of Zoroastrianism. The Pashto word for soul is the same as it was in the Avesta, for example. In some dialects of Pashto, the word for God is still the one used in Zurvanism. We can talk about the presence of Dharmic statues and idols, but what about the indelible cultural, linguistic mark of Zoroastrianism. It’s a fallacy to assume that only religions that left behind idols would be ones to consider.

Afghan identity, Turk identity and Pashtun identity seems to be intertwined throughout the medieval, early modern and modern history of the land that is now Afghanistan.
And how can then Tajiks, Uzbeks, Hazaras and Turkmens be included into this exclusively Pakhtun-dominated afghani nationalism?
And what kind of religion did you have before the islamic advent into Gandhara, Balkh, Khorasan? Did it come with sufi's or did it come with sword? Does the answer to this qn in anyway shape your relation to Islam and religious outlook?
Thanks in advance for the answers :)

    • @MarcantonioStanga
      @MarcantonioStanga 3 месяца назад

Afghan meant Pashtun until the 20th century. Most Tajiks and Ozbeks in Afghanistan are descendants of refugees that were escaping Russia during the Great Game. Tajik itself is a fluid identity, as the indigenous Tajiks could attest to. Many Tajik communities are Persianized or Persian-speaking communities of other ethnicities. For example, in the late-1800s, there was efforts to Pashtunise Persian-speaking areas such as Panjshir, but many of the Pashtuns that relocated there ended up adopting the culture and language,. Many of the Tajiks of Bamyan, for example, are noticeably different than those of Panjshir and Kabul. Compared to the Indigenous Tajiks, known as the Pamiris, they’re wildly different. Afghan became a plurinational demonym in the mid-70s, as there was attempts during the Monarchy and then during the Socialist regimes to institute a national identity for the sake of development.
The religion in Afghanistan was most-likely predominantly Zoroastrian, though this seems to be ignored likely because many Indian historians don’t tend to make a big difference between Hinduism and Zoroastrianism. Balkh was the epicenter of Zoroastrianism, and the likely birthplace and initial start point of Zardusht’s preachings. Most of the locations, i believe there’s around 10, mentioned in the Avesta, are located in Afghanistan. Pashto itself is a descendent language of Avestan, and many remnants remain of the old faith; the Pashto word for ritual purification (known as wudhu in Arabic) is from Avestan, as is the word for soul and in some dialects even the word for God. The Pashtun dance, the Attan, was a Zoroastrian ritual dance. Fire plays an important role in Pashtun culture. Even the word for bangs (as in hair) is “orbal”, which means “burning fire”. There was also communities of Dharmic followers, primarily Buddhism but also Animism similar to modern Hinduism.

    Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu
This text is for those who are Pashtun/Pathan/Khan.
We all know that Pashtun/Pathan are originally from Afghanistan/Peshawar region.
Pashto is the native language of the Pashtun or Pathans. Pashto is spoken by the Pashtun community in Afghanistan and Pakistan but the Pathan of India mostly speak Urdu or regional language.
The Pashtun have been living in Afghanistan/Peshawar for more than 2000 years.
The Pashtun elders claim that the Pashtun community are the descendants from the Bani Isra'eel. Isra'eel is another name of Hazrat Yaqub (Alaihis Salam). Hazrat Yaqub (Alaihis Salam) had 12 sons and from them came the 12 tribes of Bani Isra'eel.
The Pashtun community of Afghanistan/Peshawar follow many customs of Jewish origins and some of them are :-
    (1) Lighting candles on Friday night.
    (2) Not eating camel meat.
    (3) Not mixing milk and meat while preparing food.
NOTE :- in islam there is no superiority of any ethnic group over other ethnic group except through piety and good actions.
If the claims of the Pashtun community is true, then we can say that few tribes of the Bani Isra'eel from the 12 tribes accepted islam. That's why virtually All Pashtun/Pathan/Khan throughout the world are Muslim even to this day.

We afghans will defeat the devil and defend Islam with our lives, blood whatever it takes, to keep our faith and religion as we already have done it multiple times. There’s a saying in Afghanistan. “How do you defeat an enemy (Afghan) who looks into the barrel of a gun and sees paradise”

You will defend Islam but at the same time you will not prosper and flourish. Just suffer from ignorance and prejudice. But if that’s the price you want to pay to defend your religion, go for it.
